I am a 22 year old black straight male. But when I heard this song once by chance, tears came rolling down my eyes. Never happened before, or with any other song since. Those words hit me.
ok okokok reminding us that we are all humans, aren’t we? I hope you are doing well at age 30 and surviving these difficult times as well as possible. 💜🌟🌟💜
Well Ok okokokok, I hope you've checked out some of John Prine's work since you first heart Bette's gem of an interpretation here. Prine's songs have woven their way into the hearts and minds of so many of us, God bless him. Be well.
In the 70s her singing this song made me think so much of my grandparents who were elderly at the time. I've never forgotten the emotion within her voice as she sings it (which is obvious in this video which I think is much better than the newer recording she made of it a few years ago.)
About transcendence, Even here, young and beautiful, she evokes all the unendurable pain that's endured by old people all about us. She makes each song an epic of people that we don't even know, but come to know because she sings to us of them. This magic is beyond me. Thank God that sometimes he sends us these people. Watch how the smile rises from her mouth to her eyes, and the smile rests there. Lune
We lost John Prine just last week, but at only 25, was able to the give the world this song, probably the most poignant song about old age, loneliness and love. If you look closely at the great Divine Ms. M's face, and listen to her voice, she is doing everything in her power not to break from the emotion of this beautiful song. I have seen her perform this song in concert and seem EVERY time she sings it, she is overcome with emotion. Thanks Bette; thanks John.
At a young age of 7 or 8, I fell in love with this song and it's message. I am in my 40's now and have a career working with the elderly who have alzheimers and dementia. Ironic, or was I truly touched by the spirit of this song? You tell me!
I fell in love with this haunting song from one of Bette's live concert albums in the late 70s/early 80s, and it gets me every time. Bette was at her best here. Thanks John Prine, for creating such beautiful, deeply felt music.
I absolutely LOVE this song. I first heard her sing it on a cassette...years ago...obviously. I recently got a new CD and this song was on it. I was thrilled! She has such a raw emotion and sings as though it is just happening. Now ...that my husband and I could be behind that screen door....i can identify with it so much mo....and the emotions she provokes with her singing. Years later.she triumphed with The Rose and Wind Beneath My Wings'...unbelievable. Thank God for the Devine Miss M.
I volunteer for the "Meals on Wheels" program here in Texas. I am a professional chef, but... this song (Since I heard her version ... and then the "Master Prine".) has inspired me to do just a little more. Can you imagine yourself getting old and forgotten? Living in a "pretty prison" until you die? We would have no future without these "ancient ones"... who may have smelly cats and stinky cigars. It is never too late. They are out there, waiting for someone to just come by and say "Hello".
I'm 51 and got into her at 15! In the North of England she was unknown then so I had a great feeling that she was all mine and she still gives me that feeling even now Apparently Sinatra singing live had the ability to give every individual person in the audience the feeling that he was really only singing just for them, sort of secretly, no matter the size of the concert hall and Bette I think has this too
I had a son called David who died when he was twenty one in 1991 and a daughter called Linda who died last year,my wife died four years ago, this song really gets to me.
Anthony, it's been two years since you wrote this comment. It made me cry. I'm still in tears. I ventured here because my youngest daughter SHARED a woman singing a John Prine song in tribute to his having contracted the Coronavirus and being very ill at this time. My favourite song of his is Bette Midler's version of "Hello in There" which came out in 1973, the year I graduated from high school. I needed to hear it again. I'm 64 now. That song was written for my generation's grandparents . Now, it's about us. I can't say at all that I understand what you've gone through. I only know that to write my name into the script of your life would be an eviscerating pain. Two years later, never having met you or read this, please accept my love, empathy and great respect for you, sir. I hope these years have offered you some joy and peace.
Bette Midler Walked in to my life on August 5th 1980 . At Sunset Sound Studio in los Angeles . it was there where we spent a lot of time together . I really wonder what could have been ?
I seem to remember that when I first heard this song, she did it from the man’s point of view she said me and Loretta we don’t talk much now and Judy was Rudy
I loved her from the first time I saw her in a concert on tv late 70's. That's when she sang the song and told the story about the woman with the fried egg on her forehead. I hope I never wake up and want to put a fried egg on my forehead.
Wow those five people that dis liked this was idiots...lol for real.. this is true raw talent and she is one of the best live artist to ever live and thats a fact miss M
agree with your main point scottay, but I think the main reason John doesn't change the lyric of Angel of Montgomery when he sings it is because HE WROTE IT.
@TheySurelyKillxo This is a glitzed up version of what she did on her "friends" album, which was really beautiful. That version is really worth listening to.
how wonderful. visit "bette on the boards" to see the talent that made her the icon she is. unfortunately, she couldn't sing like this ( only on the first 2 albums) if she wanted to. makes me think the talent was barry manilow. too bad...
It's nice that people are moved by Bette here, and it shows the durability of John's song. I think this slightly tarted up, Broadway version lacks the pure, unadorned wistfulness of John's interpretation. Bette doesn't make me cry here, but John does, every time he sings it.
don't like it when people change the gender of the song,,,,just sing the original words, although what a beautiful voice and rendition, when John Prine sings Angel of Montgomery he doesn't change the gender, enough said.
you're out of your fucking mind she understand it very well she also understands John prine very well.. just like Bonnie Raitt does that's why she sings Angel from Montgomery very often for the last 45 years
Hello in there to all the lonely like myself. You are loved and will be remembered.
RIP John Prine who wrote this beautiful song.

Listen to John Prine. It will change your life. We are all in this together.

I first heard this song when I was very young. I’ve never forgotten it.
The older I get the more I ❤ this song,I'm now 68

I cannot play this song without crying. Been trying 30 years.
A fantastic rendition of this timeless song. Bette is one of the best at telling a story through song.
Godspeed, John Prine. Thank you.

Magical delivery of the many messages of John Prine's song. Very moving & very inspirational.
I fell in love with this haunting song from one of Bette's live concert albums in the late 70s/early 80s, and it gets me every time. Bette was at her best here. Thanks John Prine, for creating such beautiful, deeply felt music.
I love her and I love her songs and her films, her interviews... She is one of a kind. So smart, so talented....
Nice rendition and what a poignant expression of how lonely it can be aging without loving support of family and friends.
This is just spectacular! Her raw, open soul is in every note, every expression. PURE ART.
She is just so awesome, I can't even think of anything to say. Just like everytime I see or hear Bette, speechless. every time.
I absolutely LOVE this song. I first heard her sing it on a cassette...years ago...obviously. I recently got a new CD and this song was on it. I was thrilled! Craig.

Hello in there ...
.... omg.. straight to my heart .. my eyes are leakin like crazy

One of the most beautiful, emotional voices...
I'm 51 and got into her at 15! In the North of England she was unknown then so I had a great feeling that she was all mine and she still gives me that feeling even now
Apparently Sinatra singing live had the ability to give every individual person in the audience the feeling that he was really only singing just for them, sort of secretly, no matter the size of the concert hall and Bette I think has this too
Love this performance I think really captures the intended affect
Happy '65th' Birthday Bette..still love you after all these years.x
She sings all our histories, whether now or later. She seems to acknowledge this in the timbre of her voice...
OMG so sadly true. Changed me,
Thank you I love this song...hello...😎💜
I'm literally melted... couldn't bring myself to watch it a second time... I'd be transfixed.

Praying for John Prine during the covid-19 pandemic.
LINDA ZIMAN May he now RIP 💙🌟💙
Very true and beautifully said, but strictly vocally speaking, her material was also unique - the color, the texture...
I had a son called David who died when he was twenty one in 1991 and a daughter called Linda who died last year,my wife died four years ago, this song really gets to me.
My heartfelt sympathies. Lost my wife in 15, missing her terribly today. She loved this song. Peace on to you Anthony.

I remember her in the old bath houses wow I was a teenager
JOHN PRINE: Go down that RUclips rabbit hole....you will be forever changed.

written by America's greatest song writer John Prine
stunning.
ベットミドラーは、ソングライターでは無い。オリジナルの価値をさらに高めて歌う天才です。
LOVE !!!
HAPPY 65th BIRTHDAY BETTE I LOVE U!!! :D :)
@SpecialTalent She sings from the heart as you mentioned and makes the listener feel the same too
Doing John Prine all the justice in the world.
What a performer........

RIP John Prine. :(
I agree
she's a genius
It's a John Prine song-
A wonderful writer/singer-
try his version of this song on you tube-
RIP ❤️💔❤️
agree with your main point scottay, but I think the main reason John doesn't change the lyric of Angel of Montgomery when he sings it is because HE WROTE IT.
If you listen to more John Prine songs, this will become a regular occurrence!
@TheySurelyKillxo This is a glitzed up version of what she did on her "friends" album, which was really beautiful. That version is really worth listening to.
❤
Ms. M when she was still Divine, before her tragic Disneyfication. It’s not her fault, one poor woman can’t change the whole system.
I wish I could see her live!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭!
I was with her she is not like you see her on TV . she sounds and looks very different too. From the guy Bette Spent a lot of her time with ....
Good singing..
Bette Midler is what could've become of Janis Joplin had she made better life choices..
sometimes I wonder who is better off..
Sara Barielles mix

rip john prine
@rgwinful have you heard John Prine : Hello In There it is the
This is not Bette's real voice . I should know we were together 7 years later.
John Prine rules!!!
Hello.
Change Davey to Iraq war and this could be written today
I'm pretty sure this is a John Prine song.
@rgwinful unfortunately have to agree ,have heard a better version by her tho
don't like it when people change the gender of the song,,,,just sing the original words, although what a beautiful voice and rendition, when John Prine sings Angel of Montgomery he doesn't change the gender, enough said.
John Prine wrote the song - and shame on the over-rated Ms. Middler for not crediting him.
this is horrible. She didn't understand the song at all.
pinchold pinch If you think this is horrible, I question your taste in EVERYTHING. This is beyond amazing. Storytelling at it's finest.
+pinchold pinch BRAINDEAD
>;~D I beg to differ, sir; it is YOU who didn't understand HER!
She's been singing it for nearly 40 years, I'm pretty sure she understands the song :)
you're out of your fucking mind she understand it very well she also understands John prine very well..
just like Bonnie Raitt does that's why she sings Angel from Montgomery very often for the last 45 years
