      Seems like Movies have a problem with adapting popular Anime/Comics/Manga/Video Games/Cartoons/Toylines and yet, Tv Shows and Comics do a way better job of adapting the source material.

    Hollywood : So, what was your favorite aspect of the childhood classic, Jem?
    Jem Fanbase : Oh, well, I'm glad you asked. This cartoon was my earliest exposure to a positive environment for me to grow. It was a great inspiration for me growing up, with it being an amazing role model for me to live up to. I wouldn't be the person I am without it.

    I always figured Jem and the Holograms would lend itself well to a magical-girl/pop idol anime type show.
    Steven Universe proved that musical numbers still work in episodic cartoons.
    Lauren Faust turned something as mundane as My Little Pony into a phenomenon that fascinated both kids and adults.
    Jem has potential in the right hands...But not in the movie.

    The entire rant about Erica's gender hits the jackpot on what bothers me about this movie. Love it or hate it, Jem was surprisingly progressive for its time, a mostly-female cast of characters of many backgrounds and colors, Jem being a good person (remember the orphanage) in spite of daddy issues and having a love interest.
    So all of those videos they used come off as a genuine passion, not to mention all of the kids and men that weren't ashamed of loving something that's old and female-centric.

    • @kunopumpernikkel215

    Did anyone else get truly truly outraged by a marketing ploy done by the studio behind this movie? Prior to its release, they invited fans of the original "Jem" cartoon to send in videos detailing why they loved it, and how "Jem" inspired them through difficulties in their lives. So far, so good, as it seems like they're being nice to the fans. But it's what they do with the footage that REALLY rage inducing! They edit it to make it appear as though the fans are talking about the Jem in the movie, not the original series!😣 It just feels like a slap in the face to all those people who looked up to the original!😾

    This movie had so much potential and they ruined it. First off Synergy should have been a computer AI disguised as a smartphone assistant and had special earrings that made Holograms using Bluetooth connections. Next Rio should have never been Erica’s son. I’m fine with turning Eric Raymond into a woman. There are now female music producers and they aren’t rare anymore. But Eric was always self centered and you can’t be a good parent if you are selfish. And finally the Misfits should have been in the main plot as they are the antagonists of the original cartoon series.

    • @HexManiacQuinn
      @HexManiacQuinn 5 лет назад +20

      Well like they said, the issue isn't female producers existing so much as there being very little reason to change the sex of a character and even then it actually took away from the dynamic and messages of the character in being this kind of forceful, patriarchal figure to overcome.

    TBH having her become a Rebecca Black might have been really interesting. Say the story was Jarica puts a song up and it's received as Friday was so she takes on the Jem persona to prove to herself she is talented and Jem also blows up but in a good way. It would have been a better way to bring it into the modern world without the hologram aspect and reason for why she keeps who she is a secret also it would be a better internal/external struggle for her because the real her is seen as a joke/untalented while this character she puts on is not. Don't know if it would have been any better but it at least would have been overall more interesting and original storywise.

    This adaptation of Jem could've been good! It could've been a cheesy, fun romp. Maybe have Jerrica own a halfway house with Molly Ringwald as the random house mother, and have the Holograms live at the house, and watch the cartoon Jem Show, and have them be inspired by the series to film a music video with Jerrica, who wants to prove herself to Erica Raymond, who doubts her abilities to run the music industry. Then have a jealous Erica hire the Misfits, to rival the Holograms. Rio could still be the idiot boyfriend, and find out Jerrica's secret at the end, and be the sequel stinger. I disagree that the original Rio was bland. He wasn’t bland. He was a petulant mean jackass and not good enough for Jerrica. Seriously, Riot was a preening narcissist who was only interested in Jem for her looks, and even he was more a likable love interest.

      MeganKoumori Also, he was cheating on her. It doesn’t matter that Jem and Jerrica are the same person; he didn’t know that, so he was cheating (and I like how they actually addressed that in the comics). He also had a super jealous streak. God forbid another man so much as talk to Jem.
      Riot was just as bad, and I can’t believe they actually made him a potential love interest (another situation the comics handled better). I just wanted Jerrica to dump both of them and just enjoy being single.

      @MeganKoumori 5 лет назад +16

      @@jenneacoleman-cubero2365 That's part of the reason Riot worked so much better as a character (Don't get me wrong; he wasn't right for Jem either but he was still better than Rio). We saw Riot's backstory. We saw him grow up under an abusive father, get disowned, and work his ass off for success (Even to the point of living on the streets), all while retaining his passion for music. Hell, Riot's life story could have worked as a series on its own.
      Rio...He knew Jerrica as a kid.

    • @catspaw3092
      @catspaw3092 3 года назад +4

      Rio was literally cheating on Jerrica she made a comment "Jem is really something isn't she?" & his remark "Yeah she makes the air sizzle." And he's got that dreamy look on his face. But in another episode when Rio was getting into it with Riot he then remarked that Jem was fun but Jerrica was a real woman Riot flat out let it known he wasn't interested in Jerrica only Jem. But really none of these guys are good for Jerrica/Jem Jem even created a hologram of Rio & told him who she was & he flipped his shit. Saying she played with his feelings & what not his hologram disappeared & Jem was left crying as for Riot all he cares about money, power & fame. He tried to get Jerrica to give him half of Starlight Music & she refused what does that tell you about Riot he's power hungry being with Jem wouldn't satisfy him & Rio is too jealous.

    A Jem and the Holograms movie was such a missed opportunity for something big, expensive, over the top and dumb, and usually a cash in on nostalgia can at LEAST provide some of that, even if tramples all over the source material in the process, right? RIGHT?
    (What is it about girls' properties that denies us Bayhem?)
    What's so painful is that this came out the same year as the IDW comics, which were a fantastic reboot that preserved ridiculous colorful cheeziness like a holographic alter ego and guitar motorcycles while also bringing in more nuanced plots and character motivations.

  • @Niobesnuppa

    Honestly, considering how much the Jem lore relies on a supercomputer, I think the only way they could make a remotely realistic-seeming movie would be to have it in a futuristic setting. They shot themselves in the foot by trying to have it be both realistic and set in the present day, 'cause then they can't be faithful to the original lore, which ends up making nobody happy.

    This was a FANTASTIC collab with Creepy and Chibi-and WOW, that opening!!!
    As for the movie, the atrocity of it speaks for itself! And the next time you hear complains from those rabid Star Wars fans, or Jurassic Park fans, or Disney fans, or anyone from any other toxic fandom saying that the follow-ups/adaptations of their favorite films were made by people who hated said films, force them to sit through THIS and learn the REAL definition of writers and adapters who want to have no respect and active CONTEMPT for their sources!
    Yes, I would even dare say that not even the Last Airbender, for everything it got wrong (the whitewashing, the characterizations, the nonsensical story decisions, and the mis-managing of the effects budget) was made by people who hated it; yes, part of it's failure was due to Shamaylan falling prey to his typical mark on film that wasn't right for this type of movie, but just as much also had to do with Nickelodeon's dumb decision-making at the time. But guess what? Nickelodeon has gotten MUCH better in recent years with their decisions, and they are at quite a better position now than I'm sure the people behind THIS disaster are (except for the actors, whom I dearly hope are getting some decent stuff to put their talents towards)!

    I only saw the cartoon online a number of years ago, and even then I don't have the best memories of it (though I recall liking it). When I heard about this movie, I knew it was an insult, and what they did to those fan videos is truly disgusting. I'm happy karma came back to bite them all when this movie failed financially. A small loss, but I'll take it.
    As far as the premise of the show being ridiculous, it was. Though I remember reading (I can't remember the show well enough to say directly) that the reason Jerrica invented Jem was because she couldn't be the singer of her own band and be respected at all as the manager of a record company. That was probably true in the 80s for all I know, but I know it's not true nowadays. That was something the IDW comic adaptation of recent years changed. They gave Jerrica crippling stage fright.
    Really, this movie should have been more like THOSE. They're really good. All the characters are likable and I love the interactions between Jerrica and her sisters, the Misfits are interesting and fleshed out. They even addressed a good reason why Synergy needs to stay secret: Her technology is very, very dangerous. For one, she's a highly advanced AI in a world run on the internet. There was already an arc showing the kinds of things that could go wrong. And for two, her hologram capabilities were so good they were meant to be indistinguishable from reality, and the comic pointed out how that had *terrible* weapon implications. I'm serious.

      Fox531CD I love the original cartoon because it’s bad. The most mind boggling stuff will just casually happen and the characters won’t even acknowledge how weird it is, like the episode where they meet the yeti. It’s a fun show to watch with friends who like to make fun of things.
      It’s not all bad, however. I was initially drawn to the show because of the over-the-top eighties style, the large cast of female characters, and semi-magical girl elements. I totally understand why it’s a classic, and I completely understand why it inspired a generation of girls.

    This was never supposed to be a adaptation. This was a script for a movie in production called "Famous" and was supposed to be about a RUclips stars rise to fame hence why there's so many RUclips clips in it.
    The studio only adapted that script to the Jem name because they were going to loose the rights to make a Jem movie.
    Paramount paid Hasbro money to make films baised on their toy line/ cartoons.
    G I Joe , Transformers and then Jem.
    So this was basically the laziest attempt to hold on to an IP I've ever seen.
    No wonder why the story is all over the place.
    Christi Marx the lead writer / creator of Jem wanted to be involved as a consultant to make sure they got at least the tone of the series but they shut her out .
    So many problems with this movie.
    It's sad because Jem while not perfect was in fact a part of my childhood and is somewhat of a guilty pleasure.
    We already had multiple Transformers and GI Joe movies both animated and live action but this was Jem's first and only movie.
    Jem was the red headed step child of the Hasbro line so I'm not surprised how this was handled... just disappointed

    There is one mystery about the Jem movie that I still wonder about;
    Who is it aimed at?
    No, seriously, who is it aimed at?
    80s fans want to hear 80s music, young people want something more like Britney Spears or P!nk, it’s shot like a boring comeing-of-age movie, RUclipsrs know how RUclips works and therefore would know everything wrong with the way it works in the movie, and as for fans of the cartoon, it directly exploited and ripped them off.
    Take away all the direct refferences to the cartoon (which is sadly not that hard, you don’t even need to change the songs) is there an audience for *that* ?

    The dad barely spares a thought towards his younger daughter, what the fuck. Everything's always about JemJemJemJem. Worst part is, everyone (the aunt, the little sister herself!) is aware of it.

    I didn't know that I was waiting for you to bring this piece of shit to here. :D
    I remember my sister went to see it (she's a fan of the cartoon) and she came back 50ish minutes before it ended. I didn't need to ask if she liked it or not, her scowl told the whole story.
    16:16 That's not Synergy, it's BB-8's lesser known cousin: FU-2
    21:03 To paraphrase the Nostalgia Critic; that wasn't just cruel, it was a slap in the face. How do you take someone's cherished memories of their childhood and incorporate it into something that you know people are going to hate?
    28:46 Ok, this is the part that made me all types of angry. They had to look all over for parts to complete their iTrashcan and this is the payoff?!?! Just a message and not an inheritance or something???? Fuck off, you piece of shit movie....

    Two things. The comic book series made it work. The second is this film was clearly made for some contractual obligation because there was NO care put into it by anyone involved and they wanted to get this out and over with. What no one has bothered pointing out is the obvious. Have you noticed that a toy based cartoon produced by a toy manufacturing and sales company garnered NO merchandising? Even Battleship had Hasbro's knockoff Lego sets.
    That said, the only other Jem movie I could have seen them making is a bad comedy parody film with Kristin Wiig as an aging Jem who's stuck in the 80's. A Jem revival SHOULD have been a cartoon series. That's the only way it would work for the demographic they were going for, and the only way it would have been the toyetic Hasbro property it was meant for.

    Such a disappointment. Josie and the Pussycats had done it already! The blueprints were there! For shame.

      And Cheetah Girls, for my generation. In fact, MANY of our TV shows (mostly Disney and Nickelodeon) was centered around singers and bands going through that arc at least once.
