  • Peter Martin shows you 2 triads you can use to add some gospel flavor to your playing.
    =====================================================
    (soulful piano music) - What's going on everybody? Peter Martin here for 2 Minute Jazz. Hope you're doing great. Just wanna talk a little bit more about getting that gospel sound, that gospel feel, that gospel sensibility into your jazz and groove playing. I'm gonna give you just two triads. I'm gonna give you - they're already out there! We're looking at G-flat major.
    (soulful piano music)
    Little simple progression going down to B-flat minor. So a lotta ways to get there, but if you just take a D-flat major triad an an E-flat minor triad. And basically, you can do it with either hand, you should learn it in both hands. But if we just move up to the next inversion, so if we start, and this is over G-flat, okay? So we're in G-flat major.
    (soulful piano music)
    We're in G-flat major so we'll take a D-flat major triad first. And then we go E-flat minor triad, D-flat major first inversion, E-flat minor second inversion, I mean first inversion. D-flat major second inversion, E-flat minor, et cetera. You get it. And I mean, there's always opportunities to do some grace notes, a little bit of blues playing. But there's a lot of melodic applications for these same triads.
    (bluesier soul piano music)
    Okay, but just those two triads can take you far to get that sound.
    Happy practicing!
    (funky jazz music)

    It would be amazing if you guys did a full length gospel video. Too many of the guys teaching it on RUclips are a bit too contemporary and don't really know their theory. Either way this was amazing!

    • @crazyace88
      @crazyace88 4 года назад +8

      Ding! You nailed it. That's because most gospel guys on youtube are strictly ear players. And although ear playing is a critical key to jazz it is good to know a certain amount of theory if you're going to try to teach others. Not for the mere fact of knowing theory but to know "how to teach". Havent come across a single popular gospel based youtuber who does this on the level of how the jazz based youtuber teach. Like Adam, peter martin or aimee nolte, or julian Bradley, or Jeff Scheider, Tony Winston and the list goes on. Its a pity because although I love those jazz teachers none of them offered dedicated gospel courses. And even the courses they have arent the most hip current sounding and techniques. Peter Martin is the closest I have found who plays those new aged gospel styles well but he has a limited number of gospel lessons. I love many players on youtube but Peter is one of the most diverse teachers on the net.

      @@crazyace88 What do you think about ear players teaching ear players...like as in ... not so much how to teach but more so how to learn...correct my thinking if I am getting lost in the wind

      @@TimothyJohnsonBey That can be an incredible way to learn, but it's a lot more natural to do it in person. Canned RUclips videos where you're seeing the keyboard and you can pause and transcribe anything without having to focus your hearing or think about it much is probably not going to teach people how to be better listeners as much as just listening to music you like and imitating it by sound.

    So HOW do you practice this? Just move up and down the progression in each key until it sticks? Also I need exercises for those riffs and licks that make this sing.

    I love how this sounds. A saxophonist friend told me to dig deep into triad pairs, and what you are playing sounds like absolute musical cotton candy. So very very sweet.

    I am from Argentine, incredibly being in the 21st century for us it is difficult to make payments in dollars abroad, and also very expensive. I would love to use your online courses, but not being able to pay for it, these 2-minute videos contribute a lot to my learning. Thank you very much and cheers from Buenos Aires!

    • @JohnHorneGuitar
      @JohnHorneGuitar 5 лет назад

      After applying this to the guitar I realized that I already knew this but never thought of it in terms of the two triads. I kind of thought of it as a harmonized pentatonic with one extra note but this makes so much more sense. I’ve also used it more often in a straight major setting than Lydian. And of course being a guitarist, I don’t think I’ve ever played in Gb if I could help it.

    Peter Martin,
    I am so happy and grateful to have serendipitously come across your channel. I first saw your humorously creative video about Stevie Wonder’s effortless modulation which is also ingeniously instructional.
    So this message is to thank you for your efforts to help us all improve our groove. I look forward to exploring more of your videos.Being an older self taught piano player, I appreciate your easygoing guidance and advice.

    Hey, man --- great video and amazing playing! I do feel like there was a bVII7 chord (Cb7#11) missing after every second Gb chord (after those awesome descending sequences from the VIm) - a quintessential Gospel chord, IMHO! Otherwise, great voicings and lines! :)

    Just curious: Am I imagining it or do so many clips about Gospel all center around Db...Gb...Ebm...etc? Perfectly legit keys, of course..just seems a bit odd to seemingly have a preference for so many accidentals...grabbing so many 'short keys." OK, I guess it's just me. Anybody?

      It's actually easier in a tactile way. Like in C, G or F i find it harder to get my bearings without having to look because all the white keys are the same level.
