Owen Power has the best outlet pass in the entire NHL. Any defenseman that can clip 80% (highest in the NHL) on outlet passes is an elite puck handler. Might wanna watch the guy play once and while cuz this is hard to take serious. Owen Power is a f’ing stud and hasn’t come close to his ceiling.
Agree
Owen power just needs to play like he’s 6’6 220. Other than that he’s fine. His breakout pass% is actually the best in the nhl among ALL defensemen.
Bingo
Owen Power is 21yo. Within 2 to 3 years Power will be playing at another level. Locking in Power now will save the Sabres $4mil or more on a long term deal. The Sabres will have a new HC to help in his development.
100%
Too bad it's, Lindy Ruff as that coach .
They should've tried hard for Berube .
@@jeremeegartner9900
Maybe GMKA did.
It’s is his second year in the league bruh
The new Sabres HC can do wonders with Owen Power.
@jasoncrandall73 a new coach, that doesn't even exist yet can do wonders lol That's incredible that you're so sure a guy who hasn't even been found can do such great things.
@chadcousins2563
Owen Power is young. Dahlin took over 3 years to get to where he is now. A coach can help with a player's development (many ex NHL players have their own development companies). If you wait till a young player fully develops his long term extension will cost you a lot more (see Dahlin as a example).
@jasoncrandall73 But they don't even have a coach, so you don't know who it will be or even if that coach will be able to "Do wonders". You say that out of hope that it happens because nothing is guaranteed in Buffalo. Handing out a 7 year deal to a kid after one NHL season that wasn't even remotely exceptional is just stupid unless that player is McDavid.
No it’s actually brilliant because in a few years he could be worth far more. It’s worth the risk.
Sabres fan here: Hedman, Chara and Pronger all were nothing at all until year 5, Power is in year 2 and we all know players seem to always have a second year slump. Power has been a plus player playing 22 minutes, I have no issues with his game. Remember, Buffalo has terrible coaching and it’s a good sign he’s playing well with bad coaches. Come back in year 4-5 and then Judge a young D man. The only thing I wish power would change is I wish he was more physical in front of the net using his big body to push guys out of the way of the goalie. That’s my only complaint with him at all. Most big players are not tough, Chara and Pronger are super rare to get a D man that huge and so nasty.
Moritz and Zadorov
Sabres fan here. No one is complaining about his skill. It’s about him playing like he’s 5’8”.
@@Donny_Double_Dip Power has never been a minus player in his 2 plus years, he’s good in the D zone, come back in a few years
@@charlieb308 how does that relate to what I said?
@@Donny_Double_Dip he probably will never hit anyone, we have Clifton, Dahlin and Samuelson who do the hitting
Your description of Power reminds me of Tyler Myers back in the day
Erik Johnson.
Mike Wilson - mid 90's - sabres
No one expects him to be Chara. He'll be better than Myers, but look how long Tyler has managed to play in the league.
@@mikephalen3162 when will owen no power check some one
I’m a Sabres fan and we’ve been terrible for so long that anyone good or potentially good needs to be locked up because we aren’t able to sign top talent with this drought
What real free agents have been free??
First let me say I have been a sabres fan for almost 30 years. I also live in and grew up in idaho. Something about their play style back in the day especially with Peca really brought me in. With that said I love the call out. If it was at the beginning of the season I probably would have said different, but now is great timing. Power is a stud, yes there is a lot of room for improvement but still a top 4 on any team. Love his offense, would like to see more, especially in the shots category. He has a deadly shot when he has the confidence to rip one. He physicality definitely needs to be brought up to nhl standards though. I do believe this is a lot to do the coaching and style play. Buff right now isn’t a physical team, they are speed/skill based. But that can’t always win, especially against a team like Florida or Boston. For next season I’d love to see powers with Johnson or Samuelson on second line with him being a heavy offensive D and 30-40% more physical. Either of those two paired with him will be a great safety net and his play would help drive that second or fourth line. Dahlin and byram on 1st can be electric especially if buff can create a more cohesive 1st line through consistency(not always changing lines) and creating a more dynamic offense strategy like last year. To reiterate, power is good, he can be great. The call out was perfect. Hope he takes it as an opportunity to grow into what we all hope he can be as a truly great power D
I've said he looks like Clark Kent off the ice but plays like Jimmy Olson on the ice when it comes to being physical.
He's 21 and has just finished his 2nd season. 163 game sample size.
In 6 seasons, Paul has 202 games. 22pts.
Honestly, he's jealous OP is going to make 30% more in the first year of his extension than he has his entire playing career.
Owen too soft for his size. Get tuff it rhymes with ruff..
Byrum looked great on the Sabres! They have so much young talent on their roster and should progress in the next 2 years.
It's just Power's second full season. He was drafted first overall but he is also a defenseman, and defensemen usually take longer to develop regardless of where they are drafted. Power needs to hit the weight room this summer to better be able to handle larger, more physical forwards, but he'll never be a d-man that puts guys through the boards.
Owen power is barely 20 years old. He’ll be a dominant force for years to come. Few of the guys from his draft class have even stepped on nhl ice.
Waste of god given 6'6" frame! The dude could have knocked people down more onto the butts and that make so much difference to the team.
I was a huge critic at the beginning of the season but his defensive game got a lot better in the 2nd half. Biz just wants a headline. Biz is a useless talking head whose family doesn't care for him.
OP is not a bust yet but he definitely showed no improvement this year
He absolutely shoud be called out on his lack of physical play. I've noticed (not just him) but the Sabres could have stopped in its tracks, so much offensive zone (for the other team) time just by playing the body. Most of the time I see one offensive guy go in and still maintain the puck along the boards with players like Power (and I will call out Mittelstadt for this as he has done it every game) when all it would take is a push of the player off or away from the puck and your teammates could handily control and exit the zone. I see this every game, and yet fans boo the goalie for not making the save when the whole play could have been prevented.
Power will become more physical as he gains maturity. The point production will always be there. His 8 million dollar contract will look great in 2-3 years and going forward. Guy can move the puck very very well. Remember the cap is expected to go up 10 over the next 4 years I think it is.
Power doesn’t need to be CTE inducing body crusher but he needs to play stronger. Push other skaters off the puck and take it from them instead of going for the poke check.
Always love how the XBox GMs with NO NHL EXPERIENCE in any way, shape or form give their expert opinions because they were stars on their high school teams...
This year was the year of the “eye test vs analytics.” The eye test looked quite bad a lot of the year. Both on tv and in person. There are analytics that say he was very good. It’s too early to right him off, since most defenseman take 5 years or so to develop. But I do think he was in the dog house for most Sabres fans I’ve talked to.
He's got a point. For a #1 overalll pick, he's not had any type of an impact that a #1 overall pick should
A lot of those impact players play offense. As a Sabres fan what bothers me is that both times they had the first pick it was a defensive player who was the top prospect.
I agree the coach is not pushing him enough . To be a big force on the team . But he does have the puck smarts . But I also say the whole team does not have that toughness. Time for new coach that can get that out of them .!
Sabres fan here he reminds me of tyler myers all over again
How are you gonna skip over Mctavish as if the man hasn’t been balling for the ducks
Mason McTavish or Dylan Guenther would have been great for the Sabres.
Well let’s see how his game evolves now that Granato is gone and Ruff is back.
Owen Power puff pastry.
As I watch LR9 more often I realize his hockey intelligence is lacking just based off of his interpretation of what Biz said
Really, Owen is the poster child for why the sabres need a new coach. The team is soft, they play soft... they need the banging added to their game.. sadly, I had hoped they'd get a shot at the playoffs and find out the hard way what that means.. but they don't even have enough to get into the playoffs.. Granato is a good skills coach.. but not the entire package.
LR9 has never played or been around competitive hockey a day in his life
I know dude is like the gossip girl for NHL talk
The contract is worth it because he will develop into a more effective defenseman. We literally went through this with Dahlin and it’s painful how fast people write Power off. We need to see two more seasons before making these conclusions. At that point he could be worth more than his contract.
The kid is probably gonna break out now with Ruff as the HC
Probably won't change as far as aggressiveness. Jerry Korab was huge but not a fighter for sure. Same with Tyler Myers. Have to blame scouting and GM. They saw him in college and didn't notice or care about that.
Seider is almost 2 years older than
and 3 times better
Seider was a bully in his first game and hasn't stopped.
@Pix3lPalace crazy yeah weird I guess. Cause if mo was better playing against power they'd already have clinched a playoff spot. So weird 😂
@@kilolombardo2107Seider is still better than power ever is going to be
@@Pix3lPalace lol idk man you kinda sound dumb af right now.
Hilarious how much you're blowing this dude that actually hates your team, wouldn't sign long-term, and will be ditching the wings as soon as he can
Power seems to shy-away from offense. For example, he'll have the chance to skate the puck into the O-zone, but he'll pull up and dump the puck in. Can't figure out why.
That huge deal is not for what Power is today, that deal is for what he will become in 3 years from now.
He's in his second Pro season comin from NCAA hockey... There is a natural learning curve. People called Rasmus Dahlin a bust after his second year too. Just saying.
He needs to play a bit more like, a Chris Pronger physically, & all his offensive numbers will show up .
Op was getting a little more physical at the end of the season. Hes learning to be more like dahls. Id worry more about the dead weight 5 goal scorers.
Imagine being the Detroit Red Wings and having spent all that money on such a smattering of veteran free agents just to watch the playoffs exactly like Buffalo. Were Compher Copp and Debrincat not enough to get the amazing Sider-man into the playoffs? Detroit fans love to compare their rebuild to Buffalo but I will end my comparison right here...
People were saying because sanderson got 8 power deserved 9 and now they won't even back the 8.35.
Also this same conversation was had last year when cam York compared him to a "friendly" pronger as he has no bite to his game, year later nothing has changed.
The guy is 21 years old . Get a grip on reality.
So Owen just needs more...power?
Let’s see what happens under a new coach and eyeballs.
He'll be Canada's starting LD in a few years. Not to worry.
Power isn't even 22 and is about to get a new coach. Talking like this about him is pointless.
GMKA panicked and gave OP a huge deal well before had earned it.
Definitely. He should not be making $8m yet. Maybe in a couple years. Should have done a bridge deal
He didn’t panic at all. It was a logical and greatly calculated move.
Why are they comparing Owen power to moritz seider it’s 2 completely different players and age difference such a stupid take by biz compare him to Luke Hughes someone that’s from his draft
I think “ The Michelin Man”
He is only guilty of being soft. Super talented though.
whos own power? I only know owen pylon
He’s a plus player, in his second year. Are you a leafs fan who thinks they will win a cup with Jake McCabe as number 2 D man? Ha ha
Hahaha
Well how many teams did Biznasty drag into the playoffs by force of will...please.Granato coached a soft game hope that changes with a new coach.
Power's bad on defence. He's ok on other areas. That contract from next year? Ooof.
Nice dude. Way to be nonjudgmental and reasonable. Guy is 21 years old and plays well. I watch every single Sabres game.
Couple contracts in big question? Buffalo sucks Owner is a joke of a fan
Paul shouldn't be calling anyone out, he is arguably the worst to ever don skates 😂😂😂😂
I thought D men took a while to come into their own, yes? Owen is barely old enough to buy a freakin' beer, so BACK OFF haters. Soon folks will be saying "it isn't fair the Sabres ended up with all that talent on defense."
Samuelsson is a big stay at home Fella and when he's on the ice, the Sabres usually win. Add Dahlin, Byram, and Power and ya got a helluva top 4.
Even a 5M bridge deal would have been too much paid for what OP showed so far.
Owen Powerless. Nickname. Unplugged!
Hate to break it to you, but Seider is not even close to Dahlin, and Power is second to Dahlin so…
Power is soft AF, total cream puff. But so was Dahlin for his first few years… now look at him
He’s one of the softest players I’ve ever seen.
Powers talented but hes a cream puff, should of been a 3 year lower priced contract,he aint worth 8 mill
Paul Bissonnettte is a clown.
He's soft. I don't think you can learn to be physical. You either have a physical want to hit ppl or you dont
biz is rite watch him play, he is soft!!!!
