Since 1972, every rebuild, at any level... from a simple head gasket replacement to a complete rebuilt, I have always started with..... a single-edge razor blade.... it's effective and it gives you instant feedback as to how FLAT that block actually is. Simple but very effective tool that not too many mechanics make use of.

Super cool process of how they machine cylinder heads and check for cracks! Great content. The moment when your wife said "I'm shocked" hit me personally. I do hvac and jokingly told my wife I'm not an electrician. I know, My Duramax ran for about 5 min and then developed a healthy rear main seal leak. :( Then, when I pulled the engine, fixed the leak, and dropped it back in then the engine started leaking at the back right where the upper oil pan meets the block and the transmission adapter. I bought a 2008 LMM in early August. Completely stock from a dealer. Had the good fortune of finding a shop that was all about DURAMAX. Truck had less than 100k miles on it and had sat for awhile. Shop went all through it and did some modifications on it including the same reader you have. I had a 165 Fass pump installed and driveshaft beefed up as well. I am learning from your channel and appreciate it. Don't be surprised if I show up at your shop sometime. Good drive from here though.

Dude! Nailed it! There is nothing more gratifying than completing a major project like that and hearing it fire! Having no leaks is an added bonus. In my opinion you did deck surface right gently sanding to clean it up. Majority of the time if something isn’t true, it will be the aluminum heads, which you had milled. With the good gaskets, studs, and proper engine warm up each time, you should be good to go for a long time! Great job brother! ( PS, you know it is par for the course to have our wives jokingly doubt us and bust our chops when you did SUCH a stellar job mechanicing, next time just pound your chest and scream like Mel Gibson in Braveheart when it fires up !) Sounded like a job for K-Seal Ultimate Head Gasket Sealer....Chuckle Chuckle 😃. Are the Dodge engines in trucks any good for long term reliability these days? The Fords and Chevys seem to have more than thier share of inherent flaws at fairly low miles these days. And these vehicles are not Cheap, at least Price wise. I deleted my engine bay filter as well when I installed my Airdog. But I did one of those delete bowls so it left the filter head, bleed screw, and primer. I don't care about the primer, but the bleed screw is sure nice to have. Crack it open, run the lift pump for 10 seconds, close the screw, fires right up.
Nice job. The truck sounds great. It’s -31 in my area right now. Gm removed my block Heater cord due to a fire risk recall back in June last year. And no fix or parts available yet. I had to install a oil pan heater so I can start my truck. I love my truck but not happy with gm right now.

Congrats on the repairs & upgrades working out. That is a very nice Duramax - it's a sleeper. You would score lots of points if you gave it to your wife. 😁
Question.. how many of the rigs in your fleet have block heaters and or battery warmers , to plug in. During those cool winter months ? Also what anti gel precautions do you take for the fuel ? Might be a good investment one day. To set up a couple plug in poles. So you can plug in your fleet and not have to run cord across the ground back to the shop. I am sure if you look on any of the commercial fleet lots around there you will see them in use. Saves batteries, starters... everything vice hard cold starts... gelled fuel... thick oil... etc...
Since most of those are gonna be about 1000w each, that's like 6,000w of power which is probably a couple hundred a month. That's way overkill. He doesn't drive em, so plug it in 1hr before you're gonna start it
@@mrmotofy 🤔 hmmm... interesting point. I know that every Duramax comes with a block heater and they are 1000 watts. My suggestion was to make a simple power board. With a breaker box and a number of outlets. You could install a timer on them to setup run /operating time. This is all just to eliminate running cords over the ground to the shop. As for cost , shown on electric bill. I am sure that if all operating all the time it could increase the electric bill. This is where a timer will help. Use can be regulated accordingly. But it's purpose is the convenient ability of a short cord run vice stretching across to the shop. But you make a good point. I am fortunate I live in the south. I don't deal with extreme cold winters and, I only have one truck. Which is in the garage. Thanks for the information though. 👍
@@ronthompson2366 Just last night I installed a power Inlet with 2 female plugs on it on my Duramax. So a block heater can plug in 1 when desired. The other is always plugged into a battery maintainer which can be used all the time. I tested my block heater also and it draws 900w. The battery maintainer draws 33w when charging. I'm trying to think of/find a sealed switch/box of some sort so the block heater can be activated by a simple flip of the switch in the grill or something. Rather than popping cover off plug and plug it in. That can be less than ideal in the cold. Running off a smart plug with current sensing, I can see how much power it's using. So I know if the block heater is working or not. TruckMaster has all those trucks just sitting there, so 900-1000w for each one...just in case he wants to drive it one day just isn't reasonable. At this point I don't believe. I know trucking companies do it...but they're on a different scale. I think running power over there maybe behind the trucks to a post would make sense. Then have each truck on a battery maintainer cuz that's gonna be the main issue. Since none of these trucks ever really turn off like the old days. A simple little battery maintainer plugged into the power outlet would be easy. Assuming they're hot all the time. Batteries will last much longer than getting drained and freezing. Batteries need to stay topped off for best life, not cycled. Project Farm on RUclips has some excellent test videos of fuel additives if you're curious about them.
@@mrmotofy very cool... and I can see where you're coming from. Definitely could be a little costly for him. Be a good project for someone to work out . Many years ago... before Uncle Sam said that I won the lottery lol... I knew of a truck shop up in Washington state. That after dealing with cold winter issues. Installed a row of posts with a light bulb and cord /outlet. So they could plug the trucks in the fleet in. Many years ago and I don't recall the particulars. Cost wasn't a issue for them. Being able to get in a startup was the most important part. Not dealing with the problems of cold startup issues. Good luck with your efforts and thanks for your response. I'm just thankful that I live in the south and don't deal with the cold winter like that anymore lol.
@@ronthompson2366 last night I got to try the first start up with Batt maintainer on. At 10deg it started like it was 70 degrees. No slow cranking no hesitation at all. Tomorrow morning it should be -4 or so we'll see how it goes. Obviously the coolant will still take a while to warm but they seem to start extremely well in the cold (if the batteries work) so far the 33w battery maintainer seems to be an excellent low cost way to make sure it starts. Of course good fuel is always important. One of these days I'll get all my projects finished and out of the shop so I can park in there.
Would love to do better gaskets and studs, but I don't really have the time. And it seems like a job and I've always worked on my own stuff. Bout to start upgrading the front end parts with kryptonite parts. Also gonna rebuild or get a different front end.
Those poly mounts will make your truck ride like trash. I put a set on my LBZ few years ago, they lasted 3 weeks before I went back to OEM mounts. I hear S&B makes an awesome set, Check em out.
Hi, I’m looking at an 2003 lb7 later this week. The truck is either having cup/injector leak and or the head gaskets, I’ve build atvs, bikes, a mower, and a ls engine; do you think a head gasket job on a lb7 is something I could take on at home. I have watched your videos on the red truck an your wife truck just want a more seasoned opinion. Thanks @truckmaster
Question for you! I am in my first year of owning a 2006 gmc lbz duramax, being from Wisconsin I don’t wanna destroy my truck with rust so I have it parked for winter months in my shop. My question is how often do start your trucks on a weekly basis in this cold and let them run? Thank you
@@TruckMaster I usually will do the drivers side if it has high mileage on it or they pull the snot out it. Really easy to do with the cab off. I once replaced and lb7 engine and when i lifted the engine out both motor mounts fell on floor. I wouldn't even had to unbolt them. LOL
me too. I would at least put some rags in the cylinder and then wipe them out afterwards then use air to blow everything out. sand and bearings don't get along
I don’t think most are saying RED/WHITE/BLUE is played our per say. I think they only mean it as in it’s the same theme on each truck. So it’s like building the same truck over and over , no matter what brand truck
Question how do you get an engine shipped to you the most economical way (you as in me) I need to buy aLB 7 from someone who buys wrecked vehicles and park them out I really don’t have the time to drive up there I really don’t like driving in the mountains of Ga it can get wicked LB7s Are biting hard to fine
Have you ever delt with the lb7 grinding starter problem? I've looked on forums and it's a somewhat common issue. I have tried starter after starter and they all do it. Hit the key as and no engagement just spins. Sometimes the next key stroke does it and sometimes it's 5-6 attempts untill it works. Folks with the problem have replaced the ring gears just to still have the problem. Please help if you've heard of the fix or experienced it yourself.
What brand was the water pump and how much did it cost . I watched your how to video on how to remove a water pump and I ordered the tools to hold the fly well like you had shown .
So how much did all the extras run? My truck had some of the mods done when I purchased it and it has high mileage on it so I was curious on the cost to replace head gaskets and all the extra mods you did because your truck looks amazing and I would like mine to look just as good plus the piece of mind knowing that the head gaskets have been replaced and all the maintenance is up to date.
Unfortunately I think it eventually is going to need the valves reseated at the very least maybe a little more. About 3 months after I bought the truck my number 4 glow plug went bad. Glow plugs were easy to change thankfully the last person to change the was smart enough to put anti seize on them, however when I pulled them out there were several that were covered in oil and there was quite a bit of oil on the number 4 and every time I cold start it I get a large white cloud from the exhaust. Sadly the truck is in good shape and I've only had it just over a year. It currently has 230k miles on it and I don't really know much about it's maintenance history.
I prefer to just stone the deck and make sure its extremely clean. Very consistent strokes, careful not to gouge anything, even coverage. The block deck should be plenty flat and sufficient surface finish from the factory grind, if you clean the piss out of it.... just my opinion
correct sir,,, you can use a knife stone ,,, the deck i would not be warped ... if so take it to have it machine flat,,, your only looking for high spots... no SAND PAPER PLEASE
What fuel additives do you use on your L5P and can you do a video about servicing and additives you recommend on the L5P. Up here by Lake Michigan and getting cold weather. Some people I’ve asked use anti gel but more that I’ve asked don’t. What’s you take on that?
I have an L5P and didn’t have any issues not using anti gel for the last 3 years, then last Feb in Oklahoma we had a cold snap that left me borrowing a vehicle for 3 days, ever since then I started using hotshot secrets anti gel and also use their fuel treatment. You can also check out other brands of fuel treatments/anti gel on the you tube channel project farm he tests different ones and even uses 2 stroke oil!

Look at all good that looks when they when they deck the head like that I mean which that looks brand-new
So simple even Earl can do it.🤣
Been waiting for this upload! Wohoo
Well Earl we can see that you get all the grunt work on the boss it's all the glamor shots
😜
All kidding aside, I really enjoy your channel
Chevy Blunder Durocracks, the Hearbeat of Merica. Yup the heart starts beating and your blood pressure goes up everytime you start one.
I wouldnt ever use sandpaper, it has a tendancy to drop abrasive material, which can get trapped in the rings.
I like that thinking... replace whatever parts you can afford when the cab is off to make it easier
Would love to do better gaskets and studs, but I don't really have the time. And it seems like a job and I've always worked on my own stuff. Bout to start upgrading the front end parts with kryptonite parts. Also gonna rebuild or get a different front end.
Glad to see the LMM back up and runnin! Great job! Also did you do the regular or 5/8” trans lines?
I’m pretty sure it’s 5/8 hose
@@TruckMaster I'd like to buy your old rims on the lmm
So I just watched a video from two years ago. And I was wondering what EFI live tuner is it you have in the crew cab lbz
Is there a good > better > best for LBZ head gaskets?
Those poly mounts will make your truck ride like trash. I put a set on my LBZ few years ago, they lasted 3 weeks before I went back to OEM mounts. I hear S&B makes an awesome set, Check em out.
Thanks 👍
Just got my head gasket parts in today. Debating lifting the cab or working under hood.
Lift the cab
Yeah I’m still trying to find one for my L5P I need to talk to them and have them make one
Did u put new copper washers on those injectors after you took them out or can you reuse them?
Question for you! I am in my first year of owning a 2006 gmc lbz duramax, being from Wisconsin I don’t wanna destroy my truck with rust so I have it parked for winter months in my shop. My question is how often do start your trucks on a weekly basis in this cold and let them run?
Thank you
It’s best to start them everyday but probably once a week
15min run time at least let it come up to normal operating temp.
Would love to do built trans, 64mm turbo, up pipe, down pipes, and high flow bundle kit.
Should've done motor mount as well
They appear to be new but you definitely have a point
@@TruckMaster I usually will do the drivers side if it has high mileage on it or they pull the snot out it. Really easy to do with the cab off. I once replaced and lb7 engine and when i lifted the engine out both motor mounts fell on floor. I wouldn't even had to unbolt them. LOL
You did a good job on this truck well done truck master!
I really appreciate it
Hey buddy I just yanked felpro gaskets off my lb7 did you visually see anything wrong with the old gasket?
I like the bumper you put on that red truck that’s nice I want to put one like that on my L5 P
Im not sure if you have a video of the specs of lift you have in your shop but im looking to get one for my new shop could you give me a link?
liftsuperstore.com/product/dakota-asymmetric-12000-lb-5-5t/
I think you need another duramax I. The fleet! I got a 2005 for sale if you're interested 🤣
I’m tapped out 😂
What is it a chevy or gmc? Where are u at?
Chevy, and pa lol
@@2chins711 oh nice definetly interested i am in michigan
Not sure how to get you any info on it
I would worry about all the sand paper grit going into the oil pan area or in block piston area I guess a quick oil flush would help w debris
Good point
Speaking of merchant automotive, did u update the transfer case on that truck? Or is that model ok?
Is there a way to check injector balance rates on a 6.0 powerstroke?
From my understanding, no
Love the build so far truckmaster-Earl lol as always keep the content coming Josh
Hey what antifreeze do you run in your lmm??
What antifreeze coolant and what brand is better for the L5P?
So, has this truck been overworked that caused these problems? How heavy of a load does this truck work with?
How many parts did you have left over?
😂👍
Question how do you get an engine shipped to you the most economical way (you as in me) I need to buy aLB 7 from someone who buys wrecked vehicles and park them out I really don’t have the time to drive up there I really don’t like driving in the mountains of Ga it can get wicked LB7s Are biting hard to fine
I didn’t see the head studs when you put the heads on? Did you put them in after you set the heads on the block?
Yes I just set the heads on the dowels
Shouldn't the block be going to the machine shop when you put in head studs?
Nice Job Josh!!
Lol that paranoia on the first start is real. Thought I was the only one
Great job Josh great video
Do xotic studs require a hot re-torque?
Have you ever delt with the lb7 grinding starter problem? I've looked on forums and it's a somewhat common issue. I have tried starter after starter and they all do it. Hit the key as and no engagement just spins. Sometimes the next key stroke does it and sometimes it's 5-6 attempts untill it works. Folks with the problem have replaced the ring gears just to still have the problem. Please help if you've heard of the fix or experienced it yourself.
I personally never had that problem
Right on!
What brand was the water pump and how much did it cost .
I watched your how to video on how to remove a water pump and I ordered the tools to hold the fly well like you had shown .
It’s called merchant automotive I believe it was $165
What's the Avg cost for a shop to install that water pump?
Cost, A lot, I've heard $1500-2000
@@mrmotofy Jesus that's costly. Replacing my coolant probably won't prolong pumps life.
@@jrrains Its more work than any water pump I've ever done
I got an 2010 gmc 2500hd that keeps losing prime do you have any idea much appreciated and keep up the good content 👍
That truck is a beauty.
$10-12K is a head gasket job, sometimes more if heads need replacing.
👍when you do all that work to the what is fuel mileage before and after my 05 lly sucks only 8mpg pulling camper and 14mpg with nothing on it😤
I prefer to just stone the deck and make sure its extremely clean.
What kind of gaskets were on this one so I know which ones not to buy
Fel-pro
What fuel additives do you use on your L5P and can you do a video about servicing and additives you recommend on the L5P. Up here by Lake Michigan and getting cold weather. Some people I’ve asked use anti gel but more that I’ve asked don’t. What’s you take on that?
Check out hotshots, I also like to use Lucas
I have an L5P and didn’t have any issues not using anti gel for the last 3 years, then last Feb in Oklahoma we had a cold snap that left me borrowing a vehicle for 3 days, ever since then I started using hotshot secrets anti gel and also use their fuel treatment. You can also check out other brands of fuel treatments/anti gel on the you tube channel project farm he tests different ones and even uses 2 stroke oil!
Ok thank you so much, yes project farm is another channel I enjoy watching as well.
Is there a common problem/ Solution to my headlight low beam not lasting but a week or so ? 2011 3500 HD LML
Did you flush all the sand out of the blocks water jackets, cylinders and ports?
Yes
Love the channel and I have the exact same Mahindra tractor. 😂
Nice 👍
You ready to do another oneYou ready to do another one I have an 08 lmm gmc trying to find some1 to help me build it. Black rims
No more head gaskets for me 😂
@Truck Master good thing I don't need head gaskets just a built trans
Congratulations
Awesome videos bro!👍🏼…Aloha🤙🏽
Thanks
@truck master, off topic, how are your 60% injectors from bitterroot diesel holding up? I’m between them and S&S? Thank you
