He was an amazing drummer in high school back in the late 1980s and has only gotten better with time. I remember just listening to him play back in high school where he and I were in the school marching band together and thinking that he was gonna do big things in his life and he absolutely has.
That has got to be a personal thrill for you to see a talent like Keith grow, and keep growing. Obviously a LOT of people in the music biz saw it too. Keith is among the rare fraternity of drummers that have the distinction of playing with Steely Dan.👍
UNT pride... A guy from our high school cut his teeth in the 1990's Deep Ellum scene. Check out Michael Jerome -- he plays for Richard Thompson and Better Than Ezra these days. I didn't know the technical aspect of drumming back then, but it was clear to see he was an athletic powerhouse behind the kit. Special talent is easy to spot.
Hey Keith!!!! What did I tell you many years ago at the 55 Bar! Much love to you my brother . Remember late at the end of the night when we would hang and I said congrats to to on what you were offered with Steely Dan and Sting, I hope that you hung up that very very old octagon Stain glass somewhere in your pad. Sincerely yours and God Bless you and your family Chris Brennan! Hurry Slowly a minute at a time and life keeps getting better ! Inner peace!!!!
That’s great you knew him in high school and you saw where he started. I had the opportunity to catch all of his gigs in Dallas in the 90’s and he was as riveting to watch as he is now. Keith is a master and a great guy. Enjoy the music and stay warm in that snow. Saw your videos in MS. God bless, Sean O
Man, he was doing great with his weight loss just under a decade ago, and now he's heavier than he was before he lost his weight..Hope he takes his health a little more seriously this time..
I was lucky enough to see Steely Dan live with KC on drums in San Diego 22. Donald Fagen spotlighted him on stage like Buddy Rich in a big band. Keith was the most memorable in the show. Great respect by Donald and myself included!
That left foot never loses time he has the fills and rolls of a drum corps band leader make no mistakes about it , most of all us drummers don’t have this deep understanding of time muscle memory syncopation, effortlessly switching between triples and doubles left hand leading if you’re a fan of technical musicianship then this man is not only a cut above he’s up there with the greats , maybe not the top of the list but definitely on it along with Danny Carey , buddy rich , gene Krupa, Neil peart , John bohnam, these are the type of drummers that leave an eternal mark

I feel really old considering that I've been listening to Steely Dan since like 1972. I remember listening to them when I was building models as a 7-year old child in my "model building room" in our basement. They have become my go-to favorite! I also love Donald Fagen's solo work. What an incredible songwriter he is as well. As a drummer as well, I love KC's style. I wish the sound quality on this solo was a lot better, but it is what it is. He's a pleasure to watch, for sure!! Thanks for sharing this, Gentry! Good stuff!! My son was a stagehand for Steely Dan some years back. I raised my boys to love SD, and they listen to them this day. In fact, that same son "borrowed" all of my SD CD's about fifteen years ago and I haven't seen them since....go figure.
That was a very good drum solo. I watch a lot of drummers here, BIG NAMES, but they all sound the same. This is by far one of the better ones. His floor toms sound simply perfect. Great job.
I’ve known Keith for many years and he riveting to watch. I caught all of his gigs in Dallas back in the “90’s. He has covered a lot of ground and is a world class drummer! His wife must be a great cook! He’s really cookin on those drums too! Enjoy!
Had the amazing pleasure of seeing them live in Portland, Oregon in 2018. Wish I didn't smoke as much weed as I did. Keith had an incredible solo. As a drummer of 8 years, he is one of my drum heros. As soon as I heard he'd be touring with Steely Dan I got so excited. The Doobie Brothers also opened for them! It was a night I will always remember...
This is the second (third) time I have seen him live, when Steely Dan opened for The Eagles on March 8,9 in Chicago. This man is possessed. Just watching him getting into his trance of playing is a treat, truly enjoyable and unbelievable. There are some great youtube videos on him playing- check them out.
".....I play match grip I can't get that whatever it is they have....." Probably just a Whole Effin Lot of old-school training and technical exercises: lessons, rudiments, Drum Corps, Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, orchestra, mentoring by old guys, reading up the wazoo, etc. Ever see the movie, "Whiplash"? That sort of stuff, from teachers just as demanding if not as abusive and crazy.
It's easier to do if you grew up with it. I use both, for different situations, sometimes in the same tune (or in the same measure...). You can use any grip you please ;)
i saw him at a drum clinic in chicago maybe 12 years ago and he was half the size...He dieted major hard originally but i imagine have kids and playing on tour and being a rockstar doesnt make it easy lol

Aspiring drummers know ye this, that I learned near half-century ago: All the greats play Gretsch drums and use a traditional grip. That axiom has gotten me through many a long, lonely night . . . or something. But, while nearly everything else has failed me at least once, that one never has. ;)
That's not true. There are a lot of greats that play in the traditional but there are a lot of greats that play match grip too. I saw attorney Williams from about 10' away and he plays a lot of matched grip. Carlos Vega played Gretch drums and was killer with a match grip
Not too bad! lads just check out how he repeatedly played the same "chops" all the way to the end of his solo. He played it with intensity and that is his key element, unless he did something in the beginning that was not recorded? In other words he's been playing the same thing since I knew him. Anyway its ok but not amazing drum solo. Check out Virgil Donati, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckle, Vinnie Colaiuta and Matt Garstka!
Wow! He's put on a few pounds since I last saw one of his videos (about 10 years ago) but MAN! He can still slay those drums! Great drummer no matter how big he is.

Keith is such a tremendous player! And his double strokes are just incredible!!
Yup! Just saw this and am heading to the pad. I thought I was getting somewhere, but now...
I was going to comment on his awesome doubles. Agreed,
Soooooo solid !! Master Drummer , Master Time Engineer, Powerhouse.
Saw the Dan back in 2003 or 4, and remember being blown away by the drummer, the very same Keith Carlock
One of the few interesting drum soloists not performing circus tricks
That’s how you do it ! Change it up and all in !! Stewart Copeland once said “ I want my solo to sound like I’m falling down the stairs”. Hahaha 😅
@@IslandDigital - I"d never heard that before. That's frickin' hilarious about Copeland. He's an animal too!!

The reason I love Keith is because his style is so unique and groovy. One of a kind.
Exactly. There's something really tasty about Keith's playing. He's so smooth and in the poclet.
@radiostarfldotcom8449 Agreed. And he’s clearly been a great student.
always loved the way keith rolls
he should stop doing rolls, jelly rolls that is..
He certainly wobbles.

Pardon?
Saw him a couple of times. 2006 Atlanta. Buckhead he was a monster. Steely dan.
DAMN!!!!!! What a Solo!!!
Awesome..
He always reminds me of some sort of steam train going chugga chugga chugga cos his hihat work is so effective...
Phenomenal Drummer. Great moobs as well...
He looks like someone that works in IT but sounds like a Ferrari with the pedal to the metal.
Best comment ever and I couldn’t agree more!
Facts!!
That’s how you know he fucks
He’s been doing the same drum solo for 25 years lol
Not wrong at all
Incredibke
Q: How is a drum solo like a sneeze?
A: You know it's coming, but there's nothing you can do about it.
You can stay home.
Get the man a fan!

Been a longtime KC fan and will enjoy remaining so, if he gets his physical condition in shape.

nice chops, way to lay it down.

Great playing…but what great sounding drums too.
Sweet Jesus!!! 😂😢😮😊
