  • A brief diversion from cars as we cover the arrival of a new Shannon Class lifeboat 13-48 in New Quay, and say goodbye to the Mersey Class 12-15 after more than 30 years of service.
    You can donate to the RNLI via: rnli.org/pages/ppc/always-on/...
    The work they do is invaluable, though it does sadly cost money, and central government funds a mere 1% of what they need.

    A work colleague volunteers as crew on a lifeboat. He said one of the best parts is bailing out of meetings when his pager goes off and replying to “but this is important!” objections with “It can wait. I’m off to save lives.” I bet there’s no better feeling than pulling people out of the jaws of death.

    I come from a fishing town, where RNLI are appreciated tremendously. Many lives, boats and ships have been saved by them ever since their beginnings. They depend absolutely upon voluntary donations and voluntary work. *If you can find it in your heart to help the RNLI in either capacity, then they will welcome that assistance.* Who knows; they might save your life, or the life of someone whom you know, one day.

    Well the 'official' top speed of the Shannon is 25kts, but I've been flat out at 35kts and barely been able to keep up with one some years ago ;-) These days I drive the Talus MB-4H (aka 'bendy' for obvious reasons when you see them) tractor, for another station :-)

    This is brings some strange emotions for me. From Berthon Boat Co. building & refitting (full strip and rebuild) Severn Class Lifeboats, I went to work for Green Marine in Lymington as an Engineer/Fitter between 2004-5, where we were refitting Mersey Class. This boat (RNLI O.N. 1172) and 1173 Freddie Cooper are two I remember working on. It's great to see that it's been in service all this time, but also strange and sad to think that much time has passed that they're now being retired. The strangest experience was while visiting my Grandparents in New Zealand in 2008, I came across Arun Class ON1073 sitting in a marina! That had been the first lifeboat I worked on when I started the Apprenticeship at Berthon.

    The first number also relates to the approximate length (in m) of the boat.
    I was in Mull a few years ago for RNLI open day. We had a good look around the Severn class which had just been fitted with Rolls Royce MTU engines and despite not being a warm day it was over 30 degrees down below.
    They crew had been out the night before on a shout to the north of Islay, which is a fair distance. They had used most of the fuel on board and didn't expect the engines to be fully cooled for a couple of days.

  • @Zadster
    @Zadster 7 месяцев назад +8

    I know you said, but it is worth repeating: Not a government funded service, almost entirely from public donations, and staffed (crewed) by volunteers.
    The 12 (or 13) at the start of the number, is the approximate length in metres. Older vessels, such as the Arun class, are measured in feet.
    £4M sounds a lot, but I bet if you are stuck at sea in a storm, with no engines and taking in water, it would feel like a bargain.

  • @neildaniel8232
    @neildaniel8232 7 месяцев назад

    Have seen the old one launch from there once or twice when I was on holiday in New Quay around the early 2000's, always impressive to see them jump into action. One was a training exercise, the other one was a real call for some teenage kids that had got into trouble a bit further round the coast. When they got back from that rescue and word spread about them saving a few young lives a few buckets appeared and quickly got filled with spare change and delivered to the boathouse. A local said it was a pretty regular occurrence when they come back from a successful trip!
    Will have to see about having a look at the new Lifeboat next time I'm up there and the station is open.

    Regarding the RNLI, its volunteers put so much at risk to man the lifeboats. Back in the70s, we were on holiday in Cornwall very close to a lifeboat station; the lifeboat launched on a very stormy day and one of the crew, a dentist, caught his hand in a line which pulled taut and severed a finger; that was almost certainly the end of his career. I have so much respect for what the crews do.

    I love that Miss HubNut is also a boat nerd :) when explaining the 12-15 I immediately knew it was a registry and the 12 was the class number, but then remembered lots of people don't know that so the "she was the 15th one built" is a very good explanation!
    And what looked like having to stand on her tiptoes in the intro was a bit precarious-looking!
    I love the little girl eating sweets and watching you film, I was definitely that girl when I was younger. I watched every camcorder dad intensely, often moreso than the actual goings-on 😅

    Glad that Murphy took a day off so they didn't get a shout during the changeover. The RNLI is the only Charity that I donate to with a monthly direct debit having had need of their help in my sailing days, engine failure due to contaminated fuel (last time diesel bought from that chandler) and rough weather mixing the water that had collected in the bottom of the tank with the diesel. The 8 tonne sailing cruiser was dragging two 5 ton mooring buoys around outside Newport IOW in a force 8. Didn't want to risk sailing into a narrow harbour entrance with a ferry going in and out and the wind almost head on with little room to tack.

    Nice work, I'm lucky enough(?) to have been rescued by RNLI after an incident that really wasn't my fault. Embarrassment and gratitude is an odd combination. Later the same day I was sitting in the back seat of a badly driven Alfa-Romeo Giulia coupe which almost left the road. I got a definite feeling of invincibility that day.

    We're expecting one of the refurb Severn's at my local station, with a new station under construction too (sixth building since 1883); but for better facility reasons - have had a Severn on station for 23 years. The previous Tyne only served 14 years - that they are looking at another 20+ after the refurbs shows how exceptionally well designed & built the modern boats are.

    A bittersweet video this one. A farewell to a wonderful lifeboat that has served the community so well over the years but times have moved on and she is retiring from her role. It's great that her role will now be covered by a new Shannon but part of me is sad that 12-15 will no longer be employed as an active lifeboat in an area that has been her home for so long. I hope she finds somewhere else to play in the water helping people. Many thanks for sharing, this is quite an emotional one.

      Also a small tower will not affect the view at all, there are many masts and towers in Wales, plus there is a girt big caravan site in front of it!

    Im sorry Hubs to post this but RNLI like the National trust seem to have some great expensive equipment and a lot of volunteers BUT do the volunteers get paid or just the trust's management and the contractors that supply the top dollar equipment. I live and work by the sea in fact I work a fish yard away from the sea if the tide is super high I could get wet feet walking to my car to get home. But I talk to the fishermen and the RNLI crew and I have the upmost respect for them but at the head of every charity is a rich person. Anyway they forecast rain in Devon tomorrow so if you see a Land Rover floating out towards Lundy Island with a hub nut sticker on the back could you divert the Newquay (Cornwall the real one) or the New Quay (Wales the other one) to me....OK I know shut up Tim xxxxx

      I think there is an issue with coastal communuties getting their voices heard in Parliament. Probably thought it was easier to just do it themselves. There are still, even now, some independent lifeboat services I think.
