    • @shaunpcoleman
      @shaunpcoleman 2 месяца назад

CAFE is not really destroying cars. It is forcing the auto companies to make better engines. They were turning out crap 30-40 years ago, that is how the Japanese walked in and ate their lunch. The same engineering that gives you fuel efficiency also gives you the monstrous horsepower and torque numbers. Lazy companies blame CAFE. They just don't want to spend money on research and engineering. A middle of the road V6 in an SUV now has about 300HP. Muscle cars back in the 60's were just over that. I don't want to even think about V8s in the 1970s.

You hit the nail on the head laying the blame at the feet of Peugeot/Fiat. (Stellantis is just a name to try to hide the identity of the guilty.) The CAFE standards have been known for a long time, yet nothing was done to prepare the company for the future while Ford and GM did their homework.
The current earnings collapse shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. This was predictable years ago as they cancelled plans for new models and we didn't even hear rumors of new models. Instead, they left their dealers with virtually no 2024 models to sell.
Chrysler had a 4cyl .... the Dart and the Chrysler 200 .... and they killed the model instead of updating the interior styling. They abandoned the small-to-midsize SUV market when they killed the Journey. The Dodge Caravan invented the minivan market and no longer even exists. They put all of their eggs in the big cars and big trucks basket.
I love my 392 HEMI ... but reality is that it is the least efficient V8 on the market in spite of giving it two-plugs-per-cylinder to improve emissions. And by a wide margin. Dodge has known this for YEARS and did nothing to develop a replacement.
Now .... Dodge is a victim of its own marketing success. They pushed the HEMI in ads and commercials so effectively that their customers don't want anything else.

Chrysler may not have any 4 cylinders, but Peugeot in Europe has plenty. They could have just brought some of those cars over here and rebranded them as Dodges. Really easy solution that was at the tips of their fingers but they didn't do it. They even have performance focused ones so they could make RT or SRT versions of the new smaller cars. Look up the Lancia Ypsilon Rally HF and tell me that wouldn't be awesome as a Dodge Dart SRT.

Just remember that not too long ago, they were doing the same thing to GM and Ford. Even I have to admit that I didn't know what they were doing either but they got the last laugh didn't they. Not because they listened to their customers/fans, but because they made the necessary adjustments for the future. I do believe that there have been some great moves made by Stellantis to prepare them for this storm, however some will not make it to the next chapter of the journey and that's life. Just know that they have a plan and though people don't like it, they have to be willing to make the necessary adjustments for the future in order to have a successful one.💯

Thanks @ocmotivator, as always, for the great content, and for bringing this particular subject to light. Quite a few comments in previous videos blaming the government and the current administration as the source of the literal heart of Mopar going away. Not so as you deftly pointed out. Instead, a travesty how mismanaged the Dodge brand has been with the incredible lack of foresight in bringing to market even a handful of ‘compliance’ vehicles to help raise the brand’s corporate average fuel economy so the V8 could have lived on. As you mentioned, hopefully Stellantis starts turning around their misguided ship full of foolish decisions and works to resurrect the V8. I wonder if Tavares has actually ever driven a V8-power Mopar product, especially a Scat Pack, Hellcat or Demon? Something tells me he hasn't. I'm traditionally a European car guy but after driving a Charger Hellcat Redeye not too long ago, I can't stop thinking about it. The days of the EPA are numbered. In November CAFE will be gone. This is a fools argument. You need to watch the interview with the former CEO of Chrysler where he talks about how the company was forced to make dinky cars that aren't profitable because of what you are talking about. All of this BS dealing with govt. involved in the auto industry is flat out stupid. The goal is Soylent Green. FJB, FKH.

Why suddenly in November will CAFE suddenly be gone? If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you- at a real good discount. Don't get caught up believing everything you hear thrown around in presidential politics, you'll be very disappointed. We're still waiting on Trumps "infrastructure" plan, which was always a few weeks away. Never happened. A President isn't a king, they can't unilaterally just will things into and out of existence because they say so- that's naive to think so. There's still half the country that supports all those policies, and like has been the case in the past, they'll fight just as hard to keep those policies in place. Even if something does change, once the other half of the country takes control again- it will be right back in place, likely with even more enshrinement into law to make it more difficult to repeal in the future. Why wasn't CAFE repealed under the previous Trump admin??? Exactly.

Why will CAFE suddenly be gone in November? There's no one person that can unilaterally make that decision, and that's not even taking into account all the people who were responsible for, and support those policies; half the population. If you believe that suddenly all will be made well in November, I have a bridge to sell you- at a sweet discount of course. Short of minor changes here and there, these huge policies like CAFE, agencies like the EPA, etc aren't going anywhere. Even with their unpopularity among auto enthusiasts, those policies and agencies have broad support among the general population. Eliminating the EPA, dept of education, etc- are hugely unpopular moves across the spectrum; really mostly everyone outside of the far right. It's fine to have a healthy imagination though.

To be fair the other companies your talking about wasn't going through the passing of their CEO before he could successfully pass things over in 2018. Then two years later we were all hit with the pandemic, which led to many deaths and chip shortages. Which hurt everyone, however they had a two year CEO during this time. Then in 2021, FCA made a big merger with PSA, which made them the 7th largest company in the world. So, while they're might not have been any fully electric vehicles in North America, PSA Group had several fully electric vehicles that were being sold in 2021. This is a global company, they're not just focused on north America. They can't be, even if they wanted to. And if I'm honest I've been around the car industry for a long time. I remember when Ford and GM started dipping their feet into the hybrid and fully electric pool. Not to mention going Eco boost and E85 V6s on a lot of their platforms that were V8s. All the fans were clowning them, "why is Dodge putting V8s in everything while GM and Ford seem to be going away from them?" they said. Some even jumped ship with Dodge releases of the Hellcat variety. Then 2023 hit and everybody forgot how Dodge was giving the fans what they wanted, when everyone else wasn't but it came with a cost. Yeah Dodge could've tried their hands at hybrids and EVs before the merger with Fiat. My question is this, where was the technology for EVs and Hybrids gonna come from? Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler haven't been able to up their game on tech since they lost it all to Daimler. So Fiat was the best move, they brought in the new tech and Dodge made it look better in North America.

Maybe if the politics go the way they need to in the fall, Stellantis will get the last laugh and not even have to make EVs. Then all of the resources and money that has been pissed away on EVs by Ford and GM will be all a waste. I sure hope so, but stellantis has even bigger issues than carbon credits. Those EV's will be produced come hell or high water- if anything we're going to see a relaxing and backing off of the aggressive timetables phasing out ICE. Likely we will see the western world move to mimic the massive charging infrastructure rollout China pulled off in such a short time; China now has massive EV adoption compared to the rest of the world mainly because they have a great public charging infrastructure- sadly leaving the US in the dust partly because of our tendency to politicize everything over here as of late, and we're politically dysfunctional and polarized to the point the rest of the world is starting to leave us behind- we're stuck in the mud thanks to our failing two party political system. We the consumers are the only ones who lose in that regard with less choice, less competition, etc.

OC. I had a car way back in the 70s that got in the low 50 mpg and in a car no one wanted. It was a four banger. A aluminum block motor no less. You had to run it dry of oil before it would even think about throwing a rod. The manual trans came in a short stick and a tall stick. The short stick was a non overdrive and the tall stick was a overdrive. The last one i had built i had the tallest rear end gear i could find. It had a Holly 435 small 4 barrel carb. Split exhaust manifold with dauls that sounded kind of funny even with glass packs.
The draw backs were it was a point system and had a intermittent electrical problem that would eat a battery in less than half a hour and would kill a set of points. With fresh points i could get 54 to 55 mpg. It sucked off the line bad. I could red line it at 5000 and dump the clutch on ice and it would lurch forward and die but not spin a wheel. I never did find it's top end but about 140 was all i was willing to push it too. Just got way to lite for me at that speed.
I had the motor steel sleeved with one and half thousandth above the block and not punched all the way down so the sleeve did not slip. Had 250 thousandth milled off the cast iron head with a idler pully installed to take up slack on the timing belt. With all that work the motor put out just 300 horse naturally asperated.
Care to guess the make and model of the car? It was no speed setter off the line. A Chevy Vega. A car no one wanted and was dirt cheap. The only other car i ever drove that got super mileage was a 3 cylinder diesel Toyota Starlite. It was fast either but got in mid to high 40s. They were not sold in the US either.
So cars can get high mpg but they just are not as fun to drive.

I currently work for an American Car Co a Corporate guy. Exactly what we are doing. I use to work for Chrysler/Dodge as a corporate guy. This was when it was owned only by Chrysler the American Car Co. in the early 1990's. I still love Dodge/Chrysler but as you correctly say it is mis managed. Stellantis is getting in too late with EV's as The EV market is going down. Actually 3/10 EV owners go back to ICE.
EV at best will be 10-12% in 10-20 years no matter mandates. Keep up the good work.

From NASCAR, NHRA, Baja racing, Rally racing, and Drifting with Vaughn Gittin Jr and all the team RTR drivers… even Bill Ford and Edsel Ford were In attendance!
Jim Farley took the stage! I was standing there…. when he said, “the FORD V-8 is not going anywhere.. EVEN, if everybody else drops it …we’re keeping it going.”

I concur -- this has deeper roots than just the EV efficiency. The in-line 6 that they're basing everything upon is another clue to what you're saying -- they have to get their CAFE numbers up and from what I can see they're throwing a lot of baby out with this bathwater on the way. Back to that efficiency thing. Ford started on this track back in the early 90's at least with the focus on the overhead cam designs of their V8s. It definitely made things hard (I had a 2V 97 Mustang GT -- there was nothing at the time other than forced induction to tune them, the tech was too new and Ford didn't seem to care about power -- they cared about the MPG numbers IMHO). They kept this up through the Ecoboost 2.3 liter engines, deep-sixing their V6 -- anything to keep the average fuel economy numbers as good as they could. Another clue to this game, you could buy a dealer installed supercharger setup for a Mustang GT that didn't even void the warranty. Why wouldn't they offer this as an option from the factory (other than the Predator motors in the GT500 -- again, very small production numbers for those)? Why? Because it the CAFE number for the average on that car would still be the numbers BEFORE the blower was installed. Is this a fair game? No -- but as you point out, it's the game as it sits today. It's like NASCAR or any other artificial rule set -- these are the rules and the people that learn to cheat around them a bit come out on top.
Another thing Ford did was make the F150 body out of Aluminum. Besides gaining towing capacity and so on -- it definitely had an impact on that CAFE number. Speaking of more cheating -- I have friends with the twin turbo 2.7 and they get great mileage out of them -- when they're not towing something or hammering on the accelerator. When they do that they get worse economy than a 5.0 NA motor... Again, those fuel economy numbers I'm certain are calculated with the best theoretical average from that v6 -- not when Mario is at the gas petal. This stuff all adds up. This is why Chevy has that crazy 2.7 Liter i-4 -- people are shocked that it gets worse fuel economy than the LS motor in a Silverado -- but I'll bet the EPA numbers are helping GM or they wouldn't be doing stuff like this.
All this motor nonsense is difficult -- but those are the breaks.
Great breakdown -- also, I love my Mustangs. That lame-ass station wagon that has the Pony logo on it turns my damn stomach -- I don't care how it performs 0-60 etc, it's not a pony car. Just saying I have to agree with your sentiments there as well.

I think the offset you're referring to with gm and Ford making enough EVs and 4 bangers, to create themselves a cushion to still make v8s is going to be short-lived because the EVs aren't selling. There's lots all over michigan here right now full of mach Es and f150s that have been taken off of dealer lots, or haven't even made it to a dealer yet, because they have so many recalls and can't be sold. So sure, maybe they played along enough to give themselves enough leeway to keep making v8s, but they're still going to end up shooting themselves in the foot because they're just pissing away money on making cars to appease the government that aren't selling. I still don't think that means once stellantis tries to electrify that they are going to be above water again, because there has to be a reason why there's all these "cost cutting measures" and no more paying for carbon credits. And I think it's because stellantis is in big big trouble. And it seems their American brands are the ones that are on the back burner, even though we love CDJR. It is absolutely mismanagement at its finest. It's disgusting and sad.

Oiling issues and the replacement costs for these engines that weren't being addressed on an engineering level. The stelantis group decided to go in a different direction with the straight six with twin turbo chargers that does put out some impressive numbers for what it is . Of course, the aftermarket will continue to produce the hemi for replacement, and that is where these issues that plagued the hemi will get rectified.

As much as I dislike Stallantis. This is not on them. Factually, they are moving in the right direction based on CAFE standards. Sergio and Fiat Chysler are to blame. Fiat Chysler continuously racked up enormous fines for not meeting domestic passenger car requirements. Back in 2016 they reiterated thier goal to spend $10 billion and developing more than 30 hybrid and electric cars by 2022. Politically speaking The Trump administration during that period sought to rollback the previous administration's mpg mandate. Which I believe slowed Fiat Chysler sense of urgency to diversify its product line...

Stellantis just hasn't learned yet that us Americans love V8s. We don't care how much fuel it uses, we don't care how unnecessary they are, we don't care if a turbo four banger can match the performance, we love big angry V8s in our cars, end of story.
I drive a older 07 Explorer Sporttrac with a 300hp V8. The equivalent mid size truck today has similar hp but from a 4 cylinder or v6, do I care? No, why? Because I have 8 pistons screaming the national anthem with bald eagles flying out the tail pipe every time I need to merge onto the turnpike.
Stellantis, make all the turbo 4 bangers and 6 bangers you want but if you want to succeed in America you need to get a american flag tattooed onto your ass cheeks and drop a 7.0L V8 hemi option on everything that isn't a scooter.

Those arguing CAFE standards and emission standards need to go, were you around in the 60's, before these standards? I was, and I still have my first car, a '67 Olds Cutlass Convertible.
It averages around 13mpg on the highway, 8 in the city, and the exhaust smell will knock you out if you're anywhere near it. It was like this when brand new too. The quality of cars and trucks were terrible back then compared to today and 20 to 30mph collisions were deadly.
Imagine what it was and would be like when millions of these cars and trucks were driving around big city's, leaving a very visible layer of smog hanging in the air everywhere.
The government emission requirements enormously clean up the air you breathe, and CAFE standards reduce the cost of driving and further clean up the air.
Manufacturers are still able to build everything from powerful V8's to EVs as long as they put in the R&D to meet these standards.
Keep in mind too that both GM and Chrysler wouldn't even be here today if the government hadn't bailed them out multiple times over the years.

Cafe standards are the reason you have so many plastic parts on these vehicles which greatly increases the cost of repair. A slight fender bender, such is bumping someone's bumper and scratching the paint can result in over $1,000 in repair. Whereas in the older days you just looked at it and said huh and drove away. Imagine if they could build frames like NASCAR, obviously integrated into the body that could withstand hitting a wall at 80 mph and the occupants can just get out and walk away in most cases. Now people just die. And as we have seen, these plastic parts and vehicles sends them to the scrap yard earlier and then they have to create a larger carbon footprint to replace them. We can go on and on about the pitfalls of the government planning.
