woah, cool thumbnail! i find many youtubers don't really put much thought into their thumbnails, but you made one that perfectly shows the ideas of the video!
Wonder room could've also switch offensive stats so it would be beneficial to mixed attackers, while magic room could have that function to remove abbilities. It's sad that pokemon players don't remember about those 2 because truck room is so popular
alternatively, you could have a move that sets trick room the turn after the move is used. Think future sight, except it sets trick room instead of doing damage. I can't imagine this move being any better than normal TR in doubles, but it'd be pretty cool in singles.
Ooh that sounds like a cool idea! Although I think it would absolutely see use in TR teams in doubles because its harder to play against because the delayed activation, especially if you dont have a TR mon of your own to undo it. side note: your pfp is really cute!
I think a lot of your qualm with status moves would also be solved with more bespoke distribution. Make sure that some random fast pokemon can use tar shot or spicy extract and give them a niche!
I think the issue with doubles is it's basically a generational gimmick from 3rd gen that's overstayed the capacity of the design space to accommodate it. In 3rd gen it works because of the much lower pre-split power levels, lack of dynamic speed mechanics, and absence of any real field effects. It's also worth adding that gen 3 rebuilt a lot of the game's systems to accommodate multiple formats, but I don't think this was ever sustainable without either significantly limiting new features or throwing balance out the window (of which the latter happened). Things like priority being imbalanced is just one of many symptoms of this. I'm of the more radical opinion that I want the core mechanics of the games reworked again rather than playing whack-a-mole with balance. Even community balance groups like Smogon haven't been able to stay on top of the problems in the games anymore.
Its also why I understand why they phased out triples, I would be for an overhaul in how mechanics work in Pokemon, under the assumption that Game Freak dont heavily rebalance the pokemon themselves in terms of movepools and stats
Hey, good discussion but your title is kind of misleading because you never challenge the core idea of priority being a good mechanic. You argue for cases where on some pokemon priority is exceptionally good and for wider use to make certian moves/mons better, but you don't actually interrogate the mechanic itself. Not that you have to or anything, just the title kind of got me hyped for something a little more game design oriented and a little less strategy oriented.
True, Pokemon doesn't have much in the way that I would want to challenge as a whole mechanic, most would be individual problematic pokemon like Urshifu.

great ideas in terms of nerfing Prankster for multi turn moves, could 100% get behind that
Can't believe you survived a Shun Goku Satsu!

Yeah but in doing so that means some pokemon would get screwed over big time due to not being mixed attackers, makes going against it unfun
You've been hit by, you've been struck by, truck room 😂

I think urshifu getting buffed is more likely then TR getting changed purely for singles lol
Urshifu getting buffed would make me sick to my stomach but I wanna see what they can do with it LMAO
