  • Getrude Matshe talks about the embodiment of Ubuntu in today’s world. We rise by lifting others. It’s a call out to those who are struggling, to stand on the shoulders of those who’ve risen. To give back, to give a hand up, not a hand out. To walk with, not walk by.
She speaks to a notion, borne out of the Ubuntu principles of empathy, collaboration, compassion and connection. She speaks to actions, not words, to living your truth and bringing your own lived experience to bear on solutions. Her talk is a real and an acute account of how her visceral experience is evidence of home grown solutions working best.
Beyond helicoptering in ideas by well meaning philanthropists, it’s solutions from Africa’s diaspora that will succeed and stand the test of time. It’s people hewn from the granite resolve that she possesses, born of the same experiences, villages and towns that are best placed to forge a path forward to better their lives and to tackle the problems they face.
Getrude is a celebrated author, philanthropy consultant, and global curator and founder at HerStoryCircle - a women’s global empowerment organisation. She is passionate about helping people achieve their full potential. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. A powerful lesson here is if you don't believe you have anything to give, just show up. You are giving more than you know. Amazing.

I am watching from South Africa, and your talk gave me goosebumps and made me cry for a little moment. Africa is wonderful; you have all gained knowledge and traveled the rest of the world. I agree that it is time to go home and start nourishing one's own roots for future generations. Your presence alone contributes significantly to motivational development through self-efficacy. Thank you for an excellent seminar.

It gives such great honor to be working with you right now SisGetty. You truly are a rich seed and I look forward to displaying the knowledge you so unselfishly share with women so they can rise. Keep rising.

My dear, you are giving a great speech which is nice. The other thing you should also be telling these people is, to tell their governments to leave Africa alone, and for their governments to stop using Africa as a warehouse to extract raw materials alone.
Zimbabwe is a rich country, but the question is why should a little country like Zimbabwe under inhumane economic sanctions from the USA and Europe. It makes no sense, and that's the real issue that's destroying Zimbabwe.

I was thinking the same thing! It makes me sad and angry when "helper syndrome" people come with "nice" charity projects for the "poor" instead of addressing the single cause that makes Africa poor: colonialism, neo-colonialism, and exploitation of resources by Europe and the US. Colonialists need to give back the land and African nations need to nationalize the resources. Many great Africans have set examples but died because they could not unite Africa fast enough -- from Nkruma to Ghaddafi. And now Ibrahim Traore, of Burkina Faso, Tchiani of Niger, Faye of Senegal and (not yet president) Malema of South Africa are showing the way how It CAN be done.
