    I'm so glad that you mentioned the writing style. There is so much more to great writing than pretty prose. Plenty of crappy novels with sloppy plots and lazy characters have pretty words!

  • @Good-ol-Jaz
    @Good-ol-Jaz 4 года назад +118

    Honestly, I'm very glad the writing wasn't flowery. Purple prose does not suit every novel, nor does it enhance the "vibe" a book might be going for. The majority of Seven Husbands is written in Evelyn's POV, like she's giving an interview for Vogue. I think any flourishes would have detracted from Evelyn's voice. She's not really the type to wax lyrically about the curtains being blue XD

  • @lyannastarkweather
    @lyannastarkweather 4 года назад +47

    I agree with you on so many points about this novel. It's now an all-time favorite mostly because of Evelyn herself. She is flawed and often times frustrating, but you understand why she made the choices she did. I keep thinking about her months after finishing this book. And I totally understand what you mean about the writing style. While I love me some flowery, lyrical prose, I can also appreciate a more concise style like this. It works if the characters and the plot are engaging. And it makes for a quick read.

      well said. Did you read 📕📕📖📖"True Grit" and enjoy the colloquial style? It was noted a LOT with reviewers as it was uncommon. A style can bring so much more to a character, a setting, story, time & place, but I think people expect a common writing style that is more perfect" and written in a way they recognize. TY for bringing these points up!

    So glad you liked this book! This was my favorite book of last year, for a million different reasons! I read the ebook following with the audiobook. Highly recommend the audiobook. I always saw Evelyn Hugo as a mix of Rita Hayworth (who was Latina and had to hide her identity) and Elizabeth Taylor (because of all the husbands, first. But also because she's an icon of the Hollywood Golden Age).

    While I could not make myself cry for Evelyn, I did appreciate this read. Definitely not my top book of all time as I felt it lacked substance to her character (or even Monique), I definitely didn’t feel it was a Marilyn Monroe character!! I feel frustrated getting tricked into reading it almost by saying it’d be like Marilyn, ofc Marilyn was a smart businesswoman but Evelyn was something else at times!

      That was the whole point of the book though. That she was mean and selfish but she was those things because she did it FOR the things and people she loved and thought she needed. The whole point is that life and people are nuanced. A big gray area of good and bad.

From your glittery gray index finger, matte gray middle finger, burgundy ring and pinky fingers, gray sweater, and make up, you are displaying a beautiful attention to detail in this video that has absolutely caught my attention, causing me lose focus on your book description at times. I prefer to not complement people on what was given to them in terms of their appearance but, I really enjoyed analyzing the accent choices that you paired with your natural appearance.

    Well done review ! A simpler way of writing can be on purpose, And it can be written AS the person IS. How they talk or emote. A famous rock legend wrote a Bio and wrote the way HE talked and it was more like talking to him. I think it did represent what he COULD do, he was not a natural writer. I remember the colloquial, regional speaking mode used in the book "True Grit". It made the book MORE intense, true sounding. That style was uncommon, but reviewers loved it! I think most people expect a "well written" book to be prose like or "fancy", perfect grammar, eloquent in it's style, but this style has a place, too & doesn't represent ALL the authors styles or expertise. Maybe it comes up so rarely and some might be critiquing if it's Not real obvious. ☺❤‍🩹👏 (sorry, I'm not a natural writer, 😊😊

    Thanks for the review but your title is horribly misleading - this video is NOT SPOILER FREE. Please change it to avoid spoiling the reading experience for others.
    The detail you mention about her sexuality doesn't become clear in the book till 120 pages and it's a fairly big plot point. Because I made the mistake of watching this video before reading the book, I found out way too early.

      SEXUALITY IS NOT A SPOILER! It being treated like a twist is super gross. Knowing it going in does not at all ruin the plot and has been the reason a lot of people have picked this up knowing that there is bi rep. I would much rather tell people about the rep than "protect" someone from a misguided idea of a spoiler.
