The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails is a masterful spinoff boasting its own distinct identity, with an addictive gameplay loop enhanced by several excellently woven upgrade and replayability systems, as well as a finely crafted narrative and loveable cast that works well thanks to the relatively compact scale of it all. The stellar voice work and, as in typical Falcom fare, the sublime soundtrack also serve to make this adventure a must-play no matter one's history with the developer's lineup. This spiritual successor of sorts to Zwei is such a considerate blast from the past that I want to see more of in Falcom's future.

I've really been looking forward to this. It's great to see a reviewing group I trust like Noisy Pixel give it a 9.5 / 10.
So glad that I opted for the limited edition.
Falcom rarely dissapoints
Because they know what gamer's want
The reception of Kuro 1 and especially Kuro 2 says otherwise lol.
@@wood1066 I'm surprise because Kuro 1 was so good, but yes I have some reserve for Kuro 2. However I played it with a English machine translation patch (the Kuro 1 English patch was much better), so it didn't help.
@@Terranigma23 Kuro 1 def have good reception after we move on from the harem style of cold steel. But kuro 2 seems mix bag cause iirc it doesnt really progress the plot much i think, but yeah i still need to play kuro 2 when English patch finish tho.
@@wood1066 Except Kuro 1 is beloved. Not sure what alternate universe you're from. Jap sales were bad from Cold Steel fatigue (starting with Hajimari)
My favorite Falcom game of all time. Period.
Flawless and addictive gameplay, colorful characters oozing personality (Mishishi!), stellar world design and building, best Falcom soundtrack, beautiful story with some VERY impressive twists and extremely satisfying ending and epilogue, and replayability.
My PSP and my imported copy fo this game have finally breathed their last after years of unending enjoyment, so it is a good time to get the localized version.
For Nayuta's boundless trails must live on!
Falcom ported this directly. They haven't done that in a while. They usually let someone like Clouded Leopard Entertainment do that form them. They also did the Switch port of Ys The Oath in Felhgana and Ys X Nordics.
I happened to play nayuta no kiseki on psp by chance and it blew my mind. It was such a wonderful experience. I was so sad that this game gets no love anywhere.
yeah i played it on my phone with ppsspp a couple years back. i could never really get into ys for some reason but i was hooked on this game from start to finish. hoping for a remastered sky trilogy next. never did get to play sky 3 because there's no fan translation for the psp version and i don't have a pc.
Basically the story of Falcom in general over the years. Quality content with surprisingly small recognition, even with Trails' latest rise in popularity, it's relatively small.
Definitely has vibes akin to Brave Fencer Musashi, Threads of Fate, and Gurumin (another Falcom game).
With so many games coming out this year I was planning on passing this one up. Your review has changed my mind.
Always down for more of that ys origin style gameplay, with trails adventure rpg systems added ❤
I played a Demo of this at PAX East and was immediately sold. Im so glad it reviewed well too. I love YS and this game looks fun and fast paced just lile a Falcom game should be!
Very excited! Been playing Tales games for around 17 years. Just now trying to get into the Trails series. Have this one Pre-ordered and cannot wait!
Heard about this game and it was on my radar but so is every release from Falcom in the Trails series. Thanks for reviewing this game. By the looks of it, it looks like a fun action game thats different from your usual Trails game. Love the colorful world!!
I ALWAYS buy Falcon games blindly and know I won't regret it.
I heard this game is the culmination of Falcom's PSP era. Really makes me excited to play it.
I use to look up to Sqaure for JRPGS along time ago not anymore... Basically its Falcom then Monolith for me.
Great review - I opted to grab this on sale for $28 thanks to this
Can't wait for my pre-orded to come in have a feeling this may be a rare physical release like most trails games tend to be.
Thanks for convincing me that I should definitely buy this game. It was already one that was in my lineup of games I should look into. So many games this year that it's just crazy to try and tackle all of them with a fulltime job and a life.
I've never played a Trails or YS game or whatever, but an action-platformer with RPG elements sounds right up my alley. We don't get many of those these days. Heck, the last decent one I recall was Brave Fencer Musashi back in the late 90s.
sounds like you would like Ys a lot
If Falcom ever makes their own analog to Ruin Factory, Nayuta is pretty much the perfect base for it, especially regarding setting and art style. It even had it's own museum to fill up.
Very excited for this game. Falcom's little one-off side-story RPGs usually punch way above their weight!
Great review! Have the collector underway from NIS Europe😊
Thanks! I love these types of games! Gonna go download it when I get home
Ah memories of playing the English translated iso on the PSP. Great game, never finished it so definitely going to pick this one up
Got mine coming in the mail soon.
Hyped for my PS4 copy to arrive this week.
Can anyone help me out? I am trying to decide between this and the baten kaitos remasters that just came out. What would you suggest?
That score is big time, very impressed you liked it so much. I am so thankful these games were finally brought west and I'm happy that it sounds like so far Trails has been doing better here than expected. I do expect this game to fall off a lot of big JRPG fan's radars due to immense amounts of great RPGs coming out lately but I'm hoping I'm wrong. This has winner written all over it and I'm thankful I'm getting a Limited Edition! Thanks Noisy!
Didn't even know about this until I stumbled across your video. Looks fantastic! So much so that I just preordered the PS4 version from Amazon. My only question is will it play nice with the PS5 since I no longer have the PS4 console? I would assume so, but even checking Sony's online store it doesn't say anything about PS5 compatibility. I don't see why it wouldn't work, but with my luck some issue would pop up!
Falcom is the goat. I always pre order their games cause you always know what you're gonna get. A banger of a game with amazing music and character development. Cant wait to get my hands on the collectors edition on the 19th!
Will you guys take a look at fading afternoon?
I heard Alejandro Saab, now you got my most attention
Looks like in the spirit of Grandia, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and Skies of Arcadia. Nice 😍
When I finished this game, I was just smiling. Oh boy, what an adventure. I miss Noi already.
Regarding the connection to the Trails series, officially it is at best set in a different dimension/parallel universe. However it is very curious that Falcom would feel the need to localize this game now of all times which might mean that a further connection between Nayuta and the Trails series might appear in a future game.
Different dimension huh? I can’t help but sense a crossover fanfic idea for this in the future when it’s phrased like that.
@@grandgamer605 There is also a possibility that it takes place a in the distant past/future or that the setting is very far from the continent of Zemuria. The producer of the Trails games did hint at there being a connection and there are some hints in the games but discussing them would go into the spoiler territory.
In CS4 there's a brief conversation about how if you sail/fly away from Zemuria there's a point which you can't go any further. At 7:00 it looks like Nayuta has the same thing. Various Ys games play with the trope too. I wonder if all the Falcom games could take place on the same planet but the worlds are essentially holed off from each other by this phenomenon. Havent finished Reverie or played Kuro/2 nor the smaller series like Zwei or Xanadu so maybe there are hints there too
edit: plus Ys VIII has that whole "the world loops" thing like mentioned in CS4
I totally forgot about this game, it's weird but since the reveal some months ago I didn't hear anything about it. I'm a big legend of heroes fan but I will expect something more similar to the Ys series with this, being a Falcom game I'm sure I will enjoy it.
Always felt this game was just Trails with Y's gameplay... And it was executed perfectly...
From what I've seen/heard, it's a bit closer to Zwei (to the point that a lot of people think of it as the unofficial Zwei 3), but yeah. It's like how Tokyo Xanadu is arguably more of a sequel to this than it is the prior Xanadu games.
@@neodav00001 I love Tokyo Xanadu...
Well deserved praise! Definitely a game nobody should sleep on!
This reminds of Brave Fencer Musashi, will give it a shot.
Loved this one on PSP and I’m happy to finally be able to enjoy the action in proper 60 fps. This is Falcom awesomesauce with gameplay similar to Ys 👍🏻
Played this about 2 years ago when it released on steam. Good game.
You’re too cool for us Sage
I can’t be the only person who saw this title and assumed that I missed out on a new Legend of Heroes game? 😂 that title was a confusing one! Interesting to hear that it has a vague connection to the mainline series though!
They did their best to connect them
There’s been connections starting in Cold Steel 2 and some bigger ones in CS4 and Reverie. I think they’re going to grow more significant as the series moves forward hence the decision to make the game available to wider audience.
Gonna have to grab this one. My poor backlog lol
I’m addicted to this game
first look reminds me of tales of symphonia, def gonna give this game a go
had this game on my wishlist but was not going to buy more games bc my backlogg , but this review made me get this one anyway. And it´s awesome. It´s like Y`s but better. Great combination of platforming and action with the usual cute anime characters.
I enjoy the structure with the stages and the mini goals you can complete. All around casual fun.
Legend of Nayuta is one of the best jrpg i have ever played. I will never forget this one
It make me miss the older Shineing games that were on the PS and ps2 like Shineing Wind X something. I miss those old shineing force games or the gameboy advance ones those were fun.
I was actually planning on skipping this one, but after hearing your review I now want to play it and try to tie elements to the main series, Even though you said there's not much of a connection. I'm committed damn it lol
Great review and really looking forward to this game. Reminds me of earlier Y's titles. I will say though while this shouldn't be per say part of a game review NISA has been extremely disappointing as of late regarding their warehouse and customer service departments. I waited almost 2 weeks after the release date to get Reverie and they send the wrong game and take nearly 2 months to make it right responding to my numerous emails. I don't even have a pre-shipment confirmation yet for Nayuta, so I fear this is going to be another waiting game again. Part of me wishes Falcom would yank their business away from NISA. I really want to like NISA, but if they keep screwing up like this I just don't think I can support them directly anymore. It is a sad day when Gamestop is more reliable with their shipping and customer service...
Took me almost two months after release to get A RESPONSE on my Trails to Azure CE that I preordered in July the previous year soon as preorders opened, then another few weeks to get it. This is exactly why I did not preorder CE for this bc I didn’t even know if I’d receive it. Absolutely insane.
Damn sounds worse than what I dealt with, I'm giving them one more chance and that's it. I can't imagine how much business they've lost from this.@@legendarywolfmn
definitely seems like a game to support!
Has anyone here played Musashi: Samurai Legend (a.k.a. Musashiden II)? I ask because this is one of my favorite ARPGs of all time (though I know it isn't objectively the best, the music alone gives me so many sweet memories).
This game looks similar in some respects and really has me intrigued. The gameplay looks leagues better and I'm wondering if I should give this a try.
My interest went from "low" to "buy", thanks to this review. I had no idea what the game was other than a former PSP title lol.
That score, WOOF! So, this game is really that good? If so, it might be my first Falcom game then.
I enjoyed Nayuta more than the Trails series.
While I've only played the Sky trilogy and I'm still working through the Crossbell arc, this game plays like a spiritual successor to Gurumin that upgraded and fixed every issue I had with that game. It's by far and undoubtedly my favorite Falcom game. I still go back to the PSP version here and there due to the tons of extra content after the main story is completed. Anyone not giving this game a chance because it's not a 'cannon Trails game' (which is debatable) is seriously missing out on the culmination of PSP-era Falcom.
Ugh... I have to wait till next paycheck to buy it!
Wasn’t this originally a Japan only psp game? Glad we got it as I love action RPGs
The recent overhaul of Nis America's ecommerce platform has been a disaster. Tons of complaints. I had to wait 2 additional months for my preorder of Trails Into Reverie because they shipped the game to a wrong addressee. Luckily, the shipping process for Nayuta is going smoothly and I'll have it in my hands this Monday.
all falcom games top notch incredible ost and story
I adore Falcom’s art style.
Reminds me of Brave Fencer Musashi
I hope if it ever does get localized it will be on the Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch is my favorite for JRPGs.
If I love Brave Fencer Musashi, then will I like this game?
Wow that score. Glad I have the jack your wallet editon coming from nis.
"Falcom WAS much more than Trails and Ys" Here, I corrected your intro.
@NaNoRarh Check their game catalog from the 80s and 90s and then tell me they are not pumping out the same games over and over, I love Falcom but unfortunately they had to follow the gaming industry rules, making sequel of a winning formula and have minimum risks, I can't blame them but it sucks.
@NaNoRarh that was originally an old PSP game.
Does the hero cross dress at any point?
I thought it was connected. I seem to remember hearing the main character is towa's grandfather or something
would love a remaster of the Gagharv trilogy with a new translation. What held me back from playing them was i heard the piss-poor translation kinda ruins them.
So I see this on Steam but it says English not supported? Even though the video has English subtitles
The ones one Steam are the 2021 and 2022 version that was released for Japan. The one in this review is the most recent release (2023) with English subs are for PS and Switch. Not sure if the English sub version will be released for Steam as well though (haven’t been able to find info on that yet) but hopefully it will!
NISA released it on Steam with Japanese only, it'll be updated on 9/19 (the release date) with English. Same with Kuro whenever that gets an English release date.
@@DulyDullahan It is already listed on GOG, but no release date yet. Although - That missing release date was the same for all Falcom titles, so no problem. I have all my Falcom titles on GOG by the way. That includes all Trails and Ys titles, but also the Zwei dualogy, Tokyo Xanadu eX+, Xanadu Next and Gurumin.
Love falcom games, ys 8 is my favourite action rpg ever. Just bought this title for ps4 and i m having fun. But don't think it s a 9,5 game. Ys 8 is a 9/10 title...this one played in 2024 is an 8/10 if you close one (or two) eyes on graphic. Gameplay is great. Games at time of psp/ps3 were really fun... Simple but addicting...tried the new trials of mana and this one has a better gameplay and better level design. Don't know why it s so pricey, even on sale is expensive. The right price was 25 euro here in Europe without sale not 39...no way he has the same price of lacrimosa of dana..
Is this game English dubbed?
too many games coming out that i have to get. nayuta, the metal gear solid collection, and the original tomb raider remastered trilogy are at the top of the list.
Remastered games with english dub is always welcome
Falcom is like Atlus' fine older sister.
The Legend of Nayuta Boundless Trail Nis America Falcom PS4 Nintendo Switch Game
Tbh, it's like Ys Origin but not as good in any aspect.
I've done 20 hours and right near the end. It's a great game but the dialogue is shit though. Very childish stuff.
I fail to see how you score this a 9.5 and Ys Origin a 9.
The sound track is important to me in games and Nayuta has some great music.
I think I beat Ys Origin, 3 times and have a couple of partial saves too. With Nayuta I'm at 20 hours, I'm done with it and want it to conclude now, much longer and it will outstay its welcome. It has lots of content that is replayable but I just don't want to play it anymore.
I'd give it 7.5-8/10.
It's not up there with 3 Houses and XCDE but it was a totally worthy purchase. As I already mentioned though, if you haven't played Ys Origin, it's better than Nayuta with graphics, gameplay, OST (ever so slightly), general vibe, characters, dialogue. It's just better. If you liked Ys Origin, then this will scratch the itch for more but no way is this the better of the 2 if you haven't played either before and this is twice the price.
However I got this as a full price game and it was still worth every penny.
Wonder why the gave this an English dub instead of the Crossbell games.
Time and money.
it has like 30% the amount of dialogue as each of those games
They want $40 for this, LMAO. I'll get it when it's $10. If Ys had ADHD, this is what you'd get.
This review makes me want to dust off my PS2 and play some games
I tried the PSP game and the gameplay is very nice. The story is weird and to be honest compared to YS games VII, VIII and IX it's a joke. Nothing special.
as long as its more like ys and less like tokyo xanadu which is one of the worst arpgs ive ever played and a huge reason why it took me so long to try a ys game i think ill enjoy legend of nayuta lol
Glad you talk about the game but SLOW DOWN either that or edit your review. You speed so much through your text and between points its not very enjoyable to listen to and sometimes hard to follow 😂
THIS IS YS DISGUISED AS TRAILS
So... you're not going to comment on this being a re-release of a Vita game, the only difference it being playable in a higher resolution and localisation yet Nis are charging £50 for this? Its not worth more than £30.
This game is definitely NOT a 9.5, these guys are too generous with their reviews. It's not a bad game but don't expect something on the level of falcoms other works like oath in felghana. This game is heavily flawed, not that you can't enjoy it but 9.5 is 🌿🚬, wait for a discount.
graphic is garbage and the gameplay turn me off 1/10
FUCK IM GONE PLAY IN THIS CUZ IM AWESOME MAHAHAHAHAHAH LOOK LIKE BLOODY FUN ACTION PLATFORMER NICE TITLE
nayutachads, we have won.
