    The simplicity of the tune gave Mozart all that he needed to create multiple miracles. We are so fortunate to reap all of that beauty without any labor except appreciation. Bravo to composer and performer!

      Mozart could create so much beauty just from scales going up and down. Thus Salieri's comment from Amadeus "Ten minutes of ghastly scales.. arpeggios.. whizzing up and down like fireworks at a fairground."

    The night of December 24, 1781, Mozart and Muzio Clementi were gathered for a piano duel for the Emperor. Clementi played his best, and people thought he was the winner, but.... after that, Mozart, sat at the piano, and played all this piece without score, just improvising all the variations. Obviously Mozart won the challenge. That was the great Mozart.

  • @jeffrudzinski
    @jeffrudzinski 6 лет назад +10

    She plays the variation starting at 5:09 wrong. After the ascending scale run there is a cascading fall that alternates hands. On her RH she plays all the three note sets twice and then once on the final set to close out the sequence. It's actually the other way around (thought I might have learned it wrong so I checked Mozart's score to verify). The top three note set is played once with all the lower sets played twice each. It's not likely her fault though because I see a number of copies of this online that have it wrong as well. Aside from that very minor thing this is a fantastic performance.

      It sure makes the simple children's song boring doesn't it!

      Good taste for 3 moths old, indeed. My 3 years old still likes listening to this in the car. We have it on our Mozart compilation for kids.
      But for the adults, even played this masterful way, it seems quite boring to me. Not even worth for a pianist of this level to invest the time for practicing it. Or am I wrong somewhere somehow?
      BTW. both my kids love Arvo Part - Spiegel im Spiegel. It is a good stuff to listen to before going to bed.

    • @normanhh3
      @normanhh3 5 лет назад +1

      My thinking here is that Mozart was a bored genius who practiced the traditional piece until he couldn't take it anymore and crafted 12 variations on the tune just to be a contrarian genius.
      I could be totally wrong though. ;-)

    • @normanhh3
      @normanhh3 5 лет назад +1

      I found this little tidbit from a scholarship article dissecting the music: "Variation I also reminds us that Mozart is a commercial and popular composer, that he knows well the audience’s taste. In Mozart’s time, variations were often composed as performance practice for virtuosic display on a particular instrument. Keeping the same harmonic line from the theme, Mozart uses skill in the first variation to connect with the original melody. With the same harmonic support, the embellished melody is clearly composed from the same pattern that Mozart uses in the theme (shown in Example 3 with the circled notes). "

      @peterk.6093 5 лет назад +2

      Good ideas, thanks! Yes, it sounds something like exhibition of composer skills, player skills and instrument possibilities. Without deeper message and emotional investment. It makes sense to explain it like this. Still, it makes Mozart no less a genius with his other stuff.
