    Fun fact: the main melody of this song comes from a Breton folk song from the 1700's called Tri Martolod, which was popularised by Breton folk musician Alan Stivell in the 1970's. Another song using the melody that was pretty popular here in Europe is La Tribu de Dana by French hip-hop group Manau.

    For me, Eluveitie are the perfect symbiosis of folk elements and elements of metal! hard riffs meet beautiful flute melodies! The song you heard is a band classic! If I could suggest a slightly newer song to you, it would be "Rebirth"!

    Yes! If somebody has already said this forgive me, but that is Anna from Cellar Darling on the Hurdy Gurdy. Two songs that she sings on that I know have videos are Call of the Mountains, and Omnos. Both great songs, but really they are just a great band IMHO. I think the newer stuff is equally as amazing. 🤘🤘

    In 2002, the Swiss Christian "Chrigel" Glanzmann had the idea of combining growls and folk and recorded an EP with studio musicians. He was already enthusiastic about metal at the age of 6. Because of their success, the band became Eluveitie. The name is the oldest evidence of a Swiss tribe and in Latin the Swiss are named after it. The folk part refers to the Celtic traditions on the mainland, less Ireland.
    Afterwards, many people leave the band to devote themselves to other projects. The constant change will remain a constant. In 2006, Anna Murphy joined the band as female lead singer and hurdy-gurdy player.
    In 2016, there was a heated argument in the band while recording their next album. Anna Murphy and two other members then leave the band and form the prog metal band
    CELLAR DARLING - Avalanche (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
    Chrigel has to finish the recordings with temporary musicians and begins the tour partly with others. It wasn't until the following year that he found a new female lead singer, the Swiss Fabienne Erni, and took on some of the temporary band members.
    Fabi later got her master's degree in singing and founded a band as her master's thesis. There are now two albums from it and when Eluveitie's tour calendar allows it, they also give concerts:
    ILLUMISHADE - ELEGY (Official Music Video)
    In 2016, Michalina Malisz succeeded Anna Murphy as hurdy-gurdy player. In 2022 she left the band to form her own, with herself as lead singer:
    LYRRE - North Star (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
    A current and good single:
    ELUVEITIE - Aidus (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)

    Ok thanks for doing it. This is the signature song of the original lineup. And is their show closer to this day. Unfortunately, only the male singer is still in the band. There was a split in 2016. The current line up is fantastic and to be totally honest more musically gifted across the board. Though I love this line up so much. I would suggest doing a current line up song either Rebirth or Aidus. Then delve into the catalog they have two brilliant acoustic folk records as well

    There is a live version from masters of rock 2011 where they play this same song together with Finntroll. I think that is the best iteration of this song and even better than this original live video. Somehow the joy of them all playing that together shines through and adds something to it still. Might be worth of checking that on your own. They have lot more great songs from them to react with old and new lineup. King, Rebirth, Rose for Epona, Call of the mountains etc.

    • @Mossy-Rock
      @Mossy-Rock 10 месяцев назад

      I checked out that video. You are right - it was excellent. But, how strange to see Anna without her hurdy gurdy! And, it's absence was very noticeable. It says she had an injury and couldn't play.

  • @bardobardo
    @bardobardo 10 месяцев назад +6

    I love this band so much! Despite the lineup changes, they still maintain the spirit, for sure. And between us, what these guys do is more than music, I think! Sometimes I feel it’s like a kind of "cult"! haha I don't know if it's because many of the songs have a religious aspect (mythological topics on ancient Galia) or even the use of dead languages (the ancient extinct Gaulish) or, of course, the Celtic feel... maybe all of these things together! =D
    Of them, I would strongly recommend the song 'Omnos', but a specific version: 'Live at Woodstock 2015'. Maybe the craziest crowd they've ever had ahaha Certainly not usual, I'd say. And it also features Anna Murphy's fantastic vocals, which we've already heard here with the excellent Cellar Darling, a band that three members of this great Eluveitie line-up founded, after leaving. The awesome thing is we ended up with TWO absurdly good bands! hehe 10/10

    There it is, IMO the best folk metal band in the world 🖤The song is one of their older stuff with their former singer Anna Murphy, who you already know from her actual band, Cellar Darling, playing the hurdy gurdy in this video.
    If you want to here her voice in this amazing band, try "Call of the mountains", it's a bit poppier.
    Their actual singer, Fabienne Erni, is also absolutely stunning. She has an angelic voice. Listen to her, trying "Rebirth", for example.
    Greetings from Germany 🤘

    This band is awesome live! I've seen them a few times and loved every show. I saw them recently - the main singer was not able to be there so they had Adrienne Cowan from Seven Spires handling his vocals and she killed it! Not sure if you've checkout anything from Seven Spires yet, but they are also a great band. Gods of Debauchery is one of my faves from them.

  • @GiovanniPerini
    @GiovanniPerini 10 месяцев назад +11

    Eluveitie is a pillar of Folk Metal.
    They also have a very iconic "happy song": *The Call of the Mountains*. They released versions with French, German, Romansh and Italian lyrics for this song.
    The official video with former vocalist Anna Murphy is a must, but you can also find live recordings with current singer Fabienne Erni, in all five languages. Not all are professional recordings, but they are worth a listen.
    Enjoy your Eluveitie journey!
    P.S.
    "Eluveitie" is the original name of the Helevtians. I'm not 100% sure, but the pronunciation of the name should be quite close to, but not exacly, how a German would pronounce it.

    • @DanTheSqueegeeMan
      @DanTheSqueegeeMan 10 месяцев назад +2

      That song was actually not in Romansh, but rather in Swiss German, which is quite different from standard German.
      And he actually pronounced Eluveitie pretty close to what the band members do. Nobody knows exactly how to pronounce it correctly, as it’s a dead language. So I think he did a good job 😉

    • @luisnunes3863
      @luisnunes3863 10 месяцев назад +2

      Chrigel pronounces it almost as in French. Not there's much difference in the case of this Helvetie, which, like you said, comes directly from latin.

    Well that was a blast from the past! When this album "Slania" was released, it came highly recommended by a rock magazine I was reading, and I was obsessed with it for a while there. Now, I might be wrong, but AFAIK Ynys Mon is the Welsh name of the island of Anglesey, and I remember reading about it being called island of druids at one point. Welsh people, please correct me if I am wrong! I also loved Eluveitie's next record, Evocation I, it was acoustic songs that were only sung in Gaulish, partly using texts from inscriptions thousands of years old. As weird as that sounds, it's so well done!

    Eluveitie was one of the bands that established folk metal as one of the most creative and influential movements in metal genre. They still bring some uniqueness to the scene with those alpin folk instruments. Take a look on their most reacted song of theirs, The Call of the Mountains, a bit different from this, they have their old single Anna Murphy on the vocals.

    The instrument with the crank on the side is a Hurdy Gurdy. The hurdy-gurdy is a string instrument that produces sound by a hand-crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin its also has keys and adjustable strings

    I highly recommend listening to their collaboration with the band Faun: Gwydion. A real masterpiece and another band you should like.

    this one is based on a traditionnal celtic tune from brittany (west of France)... This tune can be found in many musics and songs (folk at first obviously pop, rock, and even rap). This very ancient song is called "Tri Martolod" ("three sailors" in britton), reborn with Alan Stivell, britton bard, in the 70's.
    As to follow a bit of the tradition, the band here tells about Mona, an island in Irish sea where traditionnaly celtics druids gathered ^^
