- This is a super detailed DIY instruction of how to change the front brake pads on a Mercedes Benz chassis W166.
Torque Spec: slider pin: 40ft-lb (55Nm), wheel bolts: 110ft-lb.
The chassis W166 includes: ML350, ML400, ML550, GLE350, GLE400, GLE550.
Good video with 3 points to mention: 1) slider pins - never use lube at all / cleaning is fine 2) pushing back the pistons simply use the old brake pad with your tool centerline 3) after installing left side simply push brake a few times to get first break aligned, then do other side - hence no need to touch brake fluid at all ..
I've heard this before.. why dont you lube the slide pins?
I put lube on the pins should I go back and clean it off
Very detail and very clear explanation. Thanks a lots for doing this. It helps lots of Mercedes owners who like to do it themselves.
One tip for compressing the pistons is to put back the old brake pad and push them in simultaneously instead of doing them one by one
Honestly I have never ever come across such a wonderful detailed guide, well done great work. God bless you
@@FlipITGarage They are screw type pistons 😱, gawd
Super idea, great 👍
To retract the pad locking system instead of using a crow bar u can go into the car system option and choose retract
@@fezg123 is this only for the rear? Or front too?
Feel so confident after watching this video. I need brake pad changed on my gle 250d
Thank you for the video - great camera work.
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video!
Great video. With Safety Issue : car not on jack stand. The pad needs lubricant to be applied so the it glides back and forth smoothly.
Was looking for the same, but there wasn't even new guide plates to install, maybe that's just how it is.
Guessing that's what the adhesive is for
Impressively good explained 👍👍👍
Instead of sucking up the brake fluid, can you just pump the brakes before starting with the other tire?
Thank you very much, it was very helpful❤❤
Nice one dude! This help me out for my job tomorrow, i just need to buy a 11mm hex !
if your car is a 2010 you need a 9MM hex?
Not that easy to find an 11mm but 7/16 is an optional approach.
Where did you buy the 11mm hex bit socket. Cannot find one.
They are harder to find. 7/16ths is good alternative
Those rotors look done
Excellent tutorial! Thank you for such a detailed overview. Can you please show how to change engine air filter on 2012 W166 ML350? I just can’t seem to find a single video that’s clear and concise. There are cabin and predust air filters though but an engine air filter for a 2012 ML350 is desperately needed!
One piston will not come out as you compress the other one because you aren't pushing on the brake pedal to force out the pistons. Also, you should use an old pad on top of the pistons while you use your your tool or c-clamp to push the piston back in, instead of your tool's face turning and grinding on the pistons.
you are very good camera hand
Hi if the bracket you removed first has snapped off while driving, am I safe to drive to the garage for repair? Many thanks
You were wanderfull man
Thanks for a great video, are the front pads for 2017 Gle 350 the same as these brake pads?
Depends on if your GLE has the AMG Sport Package (AMG wheels, larger ventilated front rotors)
Its always advisable to clean the sticking out portion of the pistons before pushing them back in.... (and possibly the whole car 😉)
this was great!!! nice work.
Where can a person buy the wheel alignment pin?
Check on "Amazon" for wheel Alignment Pin
How many miles would you expect from new front brake set ? I know it is variable but how many?
Bro.. do new pads squeek for a while after installing them ?!
If you have bad rotors yes
HI, Please provide the link for tolls to prime caliper with is you used?
That long screwdrivers thing.
Thanks.
Great job!
How many miles did the vehicle have when you did this pad change?
Good 👍
good video. I would have gone with the EBC red stuff brake pads. OEM pads are real dust makers.
With all the new, high quality no/low-dust brake pads (Akabono, Etc), I often wonder why people re-install OEM Mercedes High Dust Pads......perhaps they just like cleaning their wheels everyday
@@williamwalker3471 agree they are dirtier but braking performance and initial bite much better than ceramics.
Excellent thank you , is the rear brakes a similar process?
Rear brake pads replacement require retracting the electric parking brake. * See another you tube video for rear brake instructions. * no special tools required
10:16 the wierd part of the brake change...
That rotor needs to be replaced asap. Now you’ll need to install a brand new pads when you replace your rotors.
I thought you had to connect to computer to first deactivate the calipers??
You only need that for the rear brakes.
Or you can disengage the parking brake motor for the rear brakes from the service menu in the car.

Replacing only the pads on cross drilled rotors is not recommended. You are going to have premature wear also uneven contact. It is ok only on non cross drilled one.
That’s such bs. Not even Mercedes’ technical manual recommend changing the brake pads AND rotors at the same time unless there is enough wear, cracks along the drilled holes (it specifies a depth and length of cracks that would be of concern), or other visible defects like warping. The unevenness of the wear will only be temporary.
What's the best pads, rotors and calipers for the ML350?
I like Akabono Euro Spec pads & Brembo Rotors - High Quality w/o MB High prices.
Next time use the brake and then push it when the old brake pad is on the car thanks
