    I think we can all agree that Steve Walsh's vocal ability is a gift from God almighty. Rarely do we hear folks mention his keyboard mastery. Steve's fingering technique is to stay the least phenomenal. Great job Steve! Best regards, Chimp

    I saw the Kansas original lineup on the tour prior to this one (Monolith; this is from the Audio-Visions tour), and it was brilliant. I also saw them on the Vinyl Confessions tour, and to be honest, maybe it was the smaller hall feel (Palladium vs. MSG), but it was a really brilliant show.
    Parting shot: the most recent Kansas album, "Absence of Presence," released just last year, is the best music Kansas has put out in years, and the writing and musicianship holds up alongside the original lineup.

    IMAO, this was Kansas still at its zenith. The original members were still intact and Walsh still sounded incredible. Enjoy people, they were never the same after this, the Monolith tour. I was lucky enough to see the Leftoverture, Point, and Monolith tours and it was quite a sight and sound to behold!

    I always felt that Robby's voice was a nice counterpoint to Steve's, and they do harmonize extremely well. The disparity in their voices was one of the things that I loved about Kansas because it was yet another unique quality that set them apart from all the rest.

    Harmonically simply the best composition I've heard in my life. An ocean of morphing chords from deep down. Thanx for posting!! Plus I'm very glad that Kansas issued this Song as a live performance on the remastered "Two for the Show"-CD. Thanx for being and playing on this planet!

    I agree with those with appreciate the early years from 74-80. Those were the special moments. I saw them 4 times during that period and twice I was in the first 20 rows and Steve sang so strong that you could hear his voice from the stage louder than the PA. He was one of the great pure vocalists when he was at his prime.

    What a voice Steve Walsh had back then.

    I had the privilege to have seen them on "The Point Of No Return" tour at the Day on The Green, in Oakland CA. I love/loved this band as they sounded like nobody else out there at the time (and still don't). I think the only band that was on par with them would be Boston. Although they were were polar opposites in terms of style. They were all stellar musicians. Kerry Livgren was a phenomenal song writer and musician, mixing classical elements with thought provoking epic lyrics , and a rock swagger into something that was truly unique. All of this and the voice of Steve Walsh!
    They were so...........uniquely different, and so much better than their contemporaries. I wished they would have had greater success. Being categorized as a progressive rock band I think hurt them for a long time. I mean, performing songs about Da Vinci, the Native American, and battling the metaphorical walls that impede our journey, doesn't really hook the average high school kid trying to get laid on a Friday night. However, for those of us who "Got It", got it! Besides, nobody wanted to date us anyway, so we had the time to listen!
    But what was it with Steve Walsh and tube socks?

    I saw them in 1980 - blew me away. Kerry was planning a Poly Moog synth that had all the strings sounds Walsh is aweseome, but Kerry was discounted I think - good on both keys and guitar.

    Actually this is the Audio-Visions tour, but I do agree with you that after Walsh left the band it was never the same. The band was at their absolute peak at this time and I'm so lucky and blessed that I got to see them on this tour. It was one of the greatest concert going experiences of my life.

      I agree Ben. I became a Kansas fan in '76, then saw them in the fall of '81 in Darmstadt, Germany. They were magnificent in that outdoor concert. I was really a fan after that. Then Vinyl Confessions came out and was just wasn't the same feel. I was disappointed to see Steve Walsh had left. Then Robbie left. Wow. But I've always liked all Kansas stuff just the same.

    The way I've read it, Walsh announced he quit when they were recoding POKR, specifically right when he was about to record "Dust in the Wind." The rest of the band was outside of the recording studio listening to him record Dust in the Wind thinking "it's over." That incident probably enhanced Walsh's somber emotionality on the tune.

    I feel the same way about the Mellotron as much as the Hammond organ. Plus, the grand piano played an important role in the early 1970s music.

    the organ is a modified Hammond B3 organ in a road case, rather than the traditional cabinet; the analog synth I believe is a roland Jupiter, which was one of the hot analog synths of late 70's early 80's along with Prophet 5 and a new line of oberheim OB. those of us that managed to keep our analog synths, other than those who traded in for the newest fad in digital sampling or FM synthesis, possess real time performance treasures.

    Was this the audiovisions tour. I saw it open in Dallas, at the Wintergarden. A small venue, we were treated to two shows. The best time I ever had at the 15 or so kansas shows I have seen.

    • @ldlumpkin6676
      @ldlumpkin6676 2 года назад

      Yes. We were such fans, we went the night before and stood out by the back door and listened to them go thru their show. We went the next night and the Laser didn't work correctly, but what a show. Besides being great as a lead singer, no keyboard player ever put on a show like Walsh. All the jumping and kicks. Amazing.

    • @lutherheggs
      @lutherheggs 2 года назад

      @@ldlumpkin6676 So you were there too? They overpowered that small venue. It was like being in a tunnel and watching a train come at you. The Wintergarden, it was. Looked like it use to be a warehouse or something. I wonder if it's still there.

    • @ldlumpkin6676
      @ldlumpkin6676 2 года назад

      Yep we were there. Can't overstate how good they were. The Wintergarden closed in 1985 I did find out the Kansas concert was on October 10th and 11 1980 there. Setlist was
      Point of Know Return
      Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel
      Paradox
      Relentless
      The Wall
      Hopelessly Human
      Anything for You
      Loner
      Got to Rock On
      Child of Innocence
      Cheyenne Anthem
      Curtain of Iron
      Miracles Out of Nowhere
      You Think You Got It Made
      Mask of the Great Deceiver
      Portrait (He Knew)
      Dust in the Wind
      Carry On Wayward Son

      @@ldlumpkin6676 Thanks for the set-list! I remember too much of AV on it. I don't expect you to believe this, but I lived in the John West apts,perhaps 300 feet due east, with only a open lot between. The band had rehearsed there all week, and I walked out my front door and saw band members taking a break on that or some other stairwell, more than once.

    Walsh absolutely had great prog rock talent (as well as a penchant for writing bad wannabe hit pop rock tunes, that never hit). I think that talent was best nurtured by his fellow band mates in Kansas who know good prog stuff when they heard it. It's my understanding that he threatened to quit when recording POKR because of their "distaste" for some of the material he presented them with. Then he got his way with Monolith and AudioVisions and we see where that went.

  • @JonWRowe
    @JonWRowe 16 лет назад

    I actually like No One Together and A Glimpse of Home as the two best songs from those albums.

  • @ThorHammerdahl

    We all prefer "real" Hammond, Tron & acoustic piano; they are staff intensive to lift & not just any guitar center joe can repair & maintain them. The tron tapes were notorious for stretching, losing fidelity and coming off alignment. the human ear responds best to the real analog, rather than digital samples of these grand instruments. I have a modified Hammond spinet that I use for some gigs. I am prepared to lift it myself. I have had to learn to repair it myself. strictly practical reasons.

    Robbie gives Kansas a certain "authenticity" that David doesn't have but David is, in an objective sense, a much better violinist.

  • @JonWRowe
    @JonWRowe 16 лет назад +1

    Well at least they don't have that anymore. Walsh has lost some tone & range; but Greer is a better singer than Robbie and Ragsdale is a better violinist (not because Robbie was a bad violinist, but because Ragsdale is amazing).

  • @JonWRowe
    @JonWRowe 16 лет назад +1

    "Ragsdale is alright but can't touch Steinhardt."
    Maybe in terms of a certain authenticity. But in terms of who is a better violinist, from a purely technical sense Ragsdale is far better.

      @hadriansdog Good point. I can’t believe we are having this conversation 13 years later. Robby with a Y, RIP.

  • @JonWRowe
    @JonWRowe 16 лет назад +1

    Nope -- from what I've read, practically everything Kerry wrote, he gave to Steve. And much of what Steve wrote, he gave to Robbie. It's strange because Kerry was a much better writer than Steve. So you have Steve singing Kerry's great lyrics, and Robbie with his goofy voice singing some of Steve's goofy lyrics.

      @Beth Leinicke: Sorry to hear that. I wish you well. Walsh in his prime is my favorite singer. And generally I like the stuff Livgren wrote for him or the stuff he co-wrote with Livgren. Some of the stuff he wrote is good. Some is just okay, in my opinion.
