  • 1972 Honda Mini Trail Z50A K3, complete restoration and rebuild including 88cc big bore kit. Great little bike, loads of fun, 88cc BB kit is pretty rowdy. Still needs a little carb work - Mikuni VM20-273 carb install coming soon!

    awesome fun video!! thankyou. my buddy had the exact bike in the 70s. we lived in the long valley nj he kept it for many years. it kept burning valves because he was too big for it.. but it was a blast to ride!! cheers

    I noticed you used phat mx in the video would you recommend them I have just found a 72 mini trail 50 looking for parts and don’t know here to start nice bike 👍

      Mikuni is a vast improvement; I never did get a new vid made. I did spend quite a bit of time tuning it by swapping pilot and main jets and it’s in pretty good spot. Still have a backfire on deceleration but I believe that is more because my rotted out exhaust 🤷, the only part on the bike that still is in bad need of replacement.

    You have the black plastic insulator in the wrong place. It goes between the carb and the intake not between the intake and the motor.

      Oh that makes sense. Except I think I tried that and it pushed the carb too close to the petcock on the fuel tank. But I’ll take another look.

    Valves could not be adjusted right… that also can foul plugs but you may need a plug that can take more heat also, the mikuni carb will solve the tuning but not if the valves have to much slop.

      Thanks for the feedback. I did put the new Mikuni carb on and it’s running much better and not so rich, so that did solve the problem (just didn’t make a vid yet). But had it not I certainly would have started diving deeper as you suggest.

    Those bikes have superl low gearing in trans compared to other honda 50s IE XR,CRF,Z cuz those models with 88 kit will do closer to 55mph
