YES PLSS do more of "to read in public as the hot mysterious stranger". I'm starting uni and have none to 0 friends so I need that to cope with the fact that I'm alone lmaoo
Ok but an oddly specific one I’m searching for: a book that gives of a really rainy / stormy atmosphere. Set in the modern world. No fantasy. Protagonist in their 20s or late teens. Just nice vibes - I’ve been searching for one like this for soooo long
I don't know if someone has already mentioned this. A main character who is neurodivergent : Keiko in Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata. Although it's never explicitly stated that she is, so keep that in mind.
I'm currently reading The girl on the train and it is expected that you would bring that book up, your description just made everything more exciting, I'm even more thrilled to read it now!!!
For an italian vibe, i would also recommend something by Pavese. I recently read “the beautiful summer” (la Bella estate) and it was amazing! I would also suggest something by Morante, for example “arturo’s island”. I honestly found it a bit boring because it’s really slow paced, but everyone who has read it, has loved it so idk. If you’re more into poetry Montale’s work is absolute exquisite, a bit hard tho
Mine would be: "And Every Morning The Way Home Gets Longer And Longer" by Fredrik Bachman and "A Monster Calls" By Patrick Ness. both books were pretty depressing.
something that fits the majority of the categories is ‘perfume’ i cant remember the author but it’s set in paris 1800s about a guy who smells things and kills people it’s an amazing classic and told beautifully
Patrick Suskind! the main character wants to create a unique smell/perfume nobody else on the earth has because he doesn't have his own! that develops into him murdering people, good rec!
Trainspotting is honestly such a great book. I have an advantage when it comes to deciphering the language of the novel as I am Glaswegian. Since the slang words are spelled phonetically, it's easy for me to sound out and understand. Great video btw, I love the way you describe books
Literally subscribed a few hours ago, because of the youtube algorythm after searching something about books, and adored the aesthetics of the channel and I get a new video almost imediately hah lucky me, looks like I'm staying here for longer
I can't believe how well read you are for such a young person. I really enjoy your discussions, and sometimes I buy books based on your recommendations. Keep up the good work!
Omg could not agree with you more on Trainspotting, really prepared me for dialects of other ethnic writers like Hurston. Took me forever to get through Welsh’s disturbing details and highly coded dialogue.
i LOVED the secret history and i highly recommend if we were villains by m l rio for anyone who liked it! it follows a group of students at an arts school who perform shakespeare and its soooo good (and for english literature lovers, the way the boundaries between prose and verse are obscured really emphasise the motif of the transgression of the stage into reality, transgressions of morality etcetera) arguably i preferred it to the secret history but it’s phenomenal!
I literally laughed out loud at Old Man Goriot. That killed me. But yes, would love to see a whole video on books to read in public as the hot mysterious stranger!!
Oh my god, Cioran is one of my favorite philosophers and I have never seen someone talk about his work!! I loved your content before, now i absolutely adore you! I would also recommend his book "On The Heights Of Despair", it can be depressing but its worth the aching it leaves.
As a young adult equivalent of Kate Elisabeth Russel's 'My Dark Vanessa', I would recommend Sara Barnard's 'Goodbye, Perfect'. It follows quite a similar storyline (straight-A, perfect-in-all-means, fifteen-year-old girl in love with her teacher), but it's written from the perspective of her best friend who has previously been the polar opposite of her. It's a story which makes you deeply emerge in your own thoughts and perspectives on the whole situation, while it shows how the main character grows upon seeing her 'perfect' friend descend into a mess. It also has that wall-stare effect on the reader, but very likely more light-hearted than 'My Dark Vanessa' due to this being a YA contemporary. On a different note, great video, I loved it! 💕
you know what, i literally stopped what i was doing to come here and tell you i read paradise rot yesterday and i couldn't stop reading, that book is haunting me, i love it, i wanna be that book and I'm supposed to be studying latin but I'm here writing this comment because that book can't leave me be. thank you.
I love this! Such good content. It would be amazing if you could hold the books up to the camera to help those of us with spelling difficulties. But I loved the quirky but solid recommendation. Oh so much to read.
I’m so glad to see Trainspotting on here! I would’ve chosen the same one for that recc. Welsh is incredible. Highly recommend the audiobooks to get you into the Scottish flow ✌🏻
Stumbled across your channel the other day. Surprised to see Irvine Welsh here. Haven't seen any other youtuber really talk about him. He's been a favorite of mine since I read trainspotting and glue in high school. Dude is one of a kind.
