My biggest gripe in the original was if the Quarians looked EXACTLY like humans how was that never mentioned. I was in complete shock in 2012 when I saw her and no one EVER mentioned or any Quarioan questions how do we look so similar and how is this possible. I mean with the Asari you have the brainwashing theory and the different kinds and tentacle hair but the Quarians also have THE SAME HAIR, SKIN, AND FACE as humans. I was hoping that in the sequel they could have made some something out of it like they were so similar that humans and Quarinas started mixing and having mutant babies or shit like that.
In fact, they tell you, I don't remember where they are similar to humans, but their DNA is similar to Turian, meaning that their world, being human-like, has some of their features, but their DNA is different from ours, in the same way, the only thing in which they are The same as the human is in the face and in their reproductive organs beyond that they have nothing
I don't think it matters because all that 'Tali should look more alien' and all that nonsense doesn't work because she is a ROMANTIC INTEREST. So, of course, she must be pretty. Otherwise, it just means punishing people for having a romantic relationship with her. Besides, Star Trek survived many years with aliens that barely differed from humans and nobody complained. And Mass Effect is still far from the level of popularity of Star Trek
“best girl” I see we are ignoring Wrex. Sure he might not technically be a girl, but he is the cutest member of the Normandy teams. Bioware were just too cowardly to let the player romance him because the sheer passion he wields is enough to destroy worlds.
My biggest problem is that everyone talks about not knowing what they look like, but you can't tell me, with the sci-fi internet access they had, there wouldn't be a photo or anything.
Idk if it's exactly what you are looking for, but the mass effect art book has, multiple designs for the quarian face. It's been a minute since I pulled the book off the shelf though so I could be misremembering it may only have 1 face.
I know I'm pretty late, but if anyone's interested there's an old post on Matt Rhodes blogspot about concept art and a small part of it is about Tali's face :)
Just commented and said exactly the same. They should have had ideas for quarians in general since ME1; and they knew Tali was a love interest since ME2, so would need to show her face.
@@antiochus87 There actually are six different possible head shapes for quarians in the Art of Mass Effect, ranging from an essentially human shape to a couple really alien looks. The legendary edition version of the photo seems to be based on one of these.
I think the weirdest thing about this is that in ME 1 we can barely have anything for Tali, we can grow a friendship and throw in some hints but that's all, so no one actually thought about it... But since ME:2 the quarians got a whole new ideal, we meet their ship, we meet many of them, they noticed many players liked Tali so they made it possible to romance her, they saw thousands and thousands of fanart about how Tali could look like, and all the way to 3 where we actually visit their planet and make it possible for them to live on it, so between Mass Effect 1 to 3 they had 5 years to think about how she would look like inside the mask and they didn't... How hard was it?
@@ChrisWalkerTalker In my case, it was Miranda. I really disliked her in Mass Effect 2; she gets annoying with her daddy issues and defending Cerberus. That, and I sold Legion because I don't like the Geth in Mass Effect 3
They cut a year off the initial schedule deadline which itself was described as optimistic and was expected to be extended. Thanks to that we lost MULTIPLE major quest hubs and some current ones got cut down severely. The asari home sector was supposed to be an extensive quest hub leading to he homeworld scenario we did see. Instead of a DLC, Omega was supposed to be another major questhub with choices which could have lead to you breaking "omega's one rule" in literal and/or metaphorical ways, stationing yourself as a pirate king for the latter. There was supposed to be a quest chain to rescue the elcor with us in a mech to deal with their heavy gravity worlds (a function revived and cobbled together into that reaper origin dlc). Our fave prothean was supposed to be inbuilt into the game with missions of his own. There were plans for a salarian home system questhub which just... never left the drawing board. Earth was meant to be an extensive quest hub introducing Andersons second in command trying to find his sister and going from city to city on earth helping people and seeing your alien allied armies working together to help you depending on your choices. Additionally certain choices could have escalated a subplot involving your squad mates possibly being exposed to indoctrination if you fked up. The ending would have had wildly different concluding scenarios based on your choices.
Jesus...that sounds like they should have made most of that DLC to make up for what was cut. This is why everyone bemoaned them joining EA. We all knew they were gonna mess up Bioware. They forced a crappy Dragon Age 2 to come out, made a bare bones Mass Effect 2 and then cut over a year of development off Mass Effect 3. I don't care that EA is pretending to be for the fans these days, I'm never buying anything with their logo attached to it
Considering the way their limbs look similar to Turians and their amino acid specific physiology I was hoping Tali would look like a much smoother Garrus
@CLB Ronin I think so too, with Liara at #2 and Garrus at #3. This is mostly down to the fact that they're the 3 squad mates that stay with you throughout the trilogy. Liara's available to both MShep and FemShep, and seems to be quite popular among both types of players. Garrus seems to be the most popular among FemShep players, but we all know majority of ME players are dudes.
Well both photos are terrible: the first for the reasons stated in the video, the second because you'd expect the photo to be without her helmet (though of course the fan art itself is beautiful, it's clearly not created to fill that role). Also, yes I will blame Casey Hudson, or Bioware in general. They had since ME1 to work out what the quarians looked like, and at least since ME2 they knew Tali was a love interest and would need to show her face. In visual storytelling terms, it's a travesty that there was just a bad photo, and not even a conversation with her without the helmet.
Even with ME3 being rushed and having a controversial ending, it's still the greatest trilogy ever made. But it's sad to think about how much better it could have been.
A couple of months and some extra wads of cash would have been allocated to 4 more multi-player maps and 10 new weapons. Online multi-player was heavily pushed by EA and still is to this day.
I loved the stick photo they used it was just alien enough to justify being used and, still human enough to start a family with the Normandy's best girl.

I dunno man, Casey buying a stock photo and photoshopping it himself is fucking abhorrent. Especially when they already had commissioned art from actually talented artists! If he had the power to decide what Tali looked like and was able to create the "final" shot of her himself, he could have picked an official design from the art they'd commissioned already and use THAT instead. As much as I love hating on EA, this one is *also* on Hudson's shoulders. As are many of the other reasons that have since lead to the downfall of Bioware

But both Drell and Quarians come from arid worlds, plus the Quarians are said to be similar to Turians in some regards, made me wish that the Quarians had a bit more alien look to them
@@Just_a-guy Grunt also say that Quarians are not so squishy as Humans, Salarians, and Asari. As all races wear armor so I was expecting some sort of nature armouring or scales.
That "fanart" was actually what Tali was originally intended to look like. She was supposed to have pale skin, a round head, tattoo-like facial markings, no hair, and with large far apart eyes. This may be a hot take, but I kind of wish they stuck with her original concept or at least something else a little less human looking. Tali is an alien, and as such, she should look ALIEN. I don't like the idea of her just being some purple skinned human to play it safe with the horny teenagers that chose to romance her.
@@xxfalconarasxx5659 I think they knew what they were doing by making her more human-like. Even if she was middlingly average in terms of attractiveness it wouldn't matter, making her look strange and creepy would leave a huge block of mass effect's fans upset. Would it be more realistic? Sure, but realism doesn't always make the best stories. Hence why the reapers don't instantly wipe the floor with humanity and the gang come game three. That would be the most realistic answer, but it makes for a sucky story.
@@Nervete Doesn't necessarily have to be "creepy". Though I prefer the original concept over the current, I'm not suggesting that they actually stick with that. It was a preliminary design after all. I just think the final concept is a bit uninspired. They could have done something more. As for your criticisms. "Realism doesn't make the best stories". Yes, this is true, but what I'm talking about has neither to do with realism nor story. It's just art direction. What Quarians look like has no impact on the story of the game. Asking for interesting designs isn't necessarily asking for realism either. I just want something a little more creative. I don't care if Tali's design is realistic or not. A lot of Mass Effect's alien designs are unrealistic. I mean their obsession with giving so many of them three fingered hands, with only one thumb is pretty unrealistic for tool using races, but I'm not really complaining about that. And I'll meet you half way. Some of the more "alien" alien designs can look pretty bad too. For example, I dislike the design of the Angara in Mass Effect Andromeda. Lastly, if your concern is the devs upsetting the fans, then don't you think we should be advocating that they never do a face reveal? There is nothing wrong with preserving a little bit of ambiguity in a game.
I will say, both are pretty even if one was rushed, and I like that she has hair at least visible in the original. Not sure how I feel about a potentially bald tali 💀
I see your concerns but I believe quarians still posess hair. They do have eyebrows so I am pretty sure they also have hair on their heads and even though it's only stockphoto, the original picture of Tali shows her with hair so I doubt they'd retcon again. Just likely they have it beneath some kind of head cover beneath the helmet.
Honestly the picture didn’t bother me, even then. What did is the fact that even in the Legendary Edition, we STILL don’t see her face when she removes her mask on Raanoch. Come on guys!
the timeline EA gave them was huge and agreed upon at the start in the contract. Bioware fudged development and kept asking for extensions. EA eventually had to say no as shareholders were getting fed up of Casey Hudson's excuses. I love throwing mud at EA but this one wasn't their fault.
Leaving a huge plot point like this up to a last-minute decision left me frothing mad back when this came out. Tali was my sweetheart, and they did her dirty. I still stand by my old impression even though it's somewhat better now after the patching, DLC and remake. ME3 is one of the greatest games out there. Except for the last 20 minutes of it and some minutes sprinkled in leading up to the endgame phase which is utter garbage and ruins the experience almost completely. I'm somewhat miffed they didn't include the ME3 multiplayer in the remake but I can see why they didn't.
Not gonna lie, I thought the first one was fine. Not incredible, but it wasnt a massive letdown or anything to me. But then, I didnt start with the first game when it came out, so maybe its a "you had to be there" thing
We’ve literally known this through official means for years now, this isnt magic new knowledge or nothing I do def like the design thry went with even if it was a quick photoshop, way better than most fan designs i’ve seen, rlly disappointed they didnt model her face in legendary edition tho wouldve been great opportunity for them to add stuff that was cut or they didnt have time for
I can believe EA put the devs under lots of pressure. But the game was delayed by almost half a year from early Q4 2011 to late Q1 2012. There's an archived IGN podcast where Bioware leads did an interview, and I'm paraphrasing here. They said EA gave them the time to finish the game right, and they got so much time they were basically spinning tires before release. That podcast can be found, it's a little long, but I think Hudson really liked that pic, and wanted Tali to be seen as an exotic beauty. Hudson Found that stock photo and wanted her to be tali.
I feel like the final image was actually pretty good! But I imagine a species that lives their entire lives in enviro-suits and flotilla ship colonies would be....significantly paler. Like "VERY sensitive to solar rays" pale. I feel like even "rubber-forehead aliens" need to make you re-evaluate your definition of "beauty" instead of just presenting "Attractive earth-model, but she's got interesting eyes!" lol Let's be honest, EA execs probably had a "conventionally bangable" quota they were looking for...
The reason why the original trilogy hits different is because it wasn't touched by ea. Bioware was acquired by ea then they released their own version that you all know as andromeda. On me3 bioware had run out of time and resources so they rushed it. Then ea acquired bioware they released the legendary edition that they fixed a little People either dont know me3 had multi-player or simply dont remember lol i wish they kept online on the LE.
I like the more human looking Tali. The Quarians are like Battlestar Galactica, and them being more human makes them more sympathetic with "what if humans had to flee Earth, and what would happen to them?"
Yeah, I seem to remember him saying the ending wasn't just going to be red, green, or blue...lol. I'll blame him and Mac for the story and ending of 3.
Even knowing the original picture's origin, I never minded it. I also don't mind the new picture, but I wish our dialogue options could influence which picture showed up. Personally, I would have it influenced by decisions made in Tali & Legion's loyalty missions. Note that these scenarios assume the Quarians survive their war, regardless if the Geth do as well. In the former, the last decision (save for giving the evidence, of course) would be a determining factor. If you picked the above options on the right, you would guarantee Tali's photo result regardless of the end-choice in Legion's loyalty mission: if you select [Rally the Crowd], the photo would have the partially masked Tali since she still feels a massive bond with the Flotilla; if you denied finding evidence, then the photo would show Tali without the mask since she's exiled. Exonerating Tali herself, however, would put Tali's "facial identity" on the fence (until Legion's mission) since she experienced both Shepard's defense and a reminder of her service to the fleet. The end result of Legion's loyalty mission, should you exonerate Tali yourself, would show its effects from which side takes the most hits at first: if you destroy the Heretic Station, the Quarians have the biggest start and, even though she voted against it, Tali wouldn't feel the effects as greatly and her photo would have her half-masked; if you rewrite the Heretics, the Quarians feel the effects of their pre-emptive strike while the Geth benefit, fully proving Tali correct and guaranteeing her photo as fully unmasked. Of course, should you skip Legion's loyalty mission, Tali would be fully unmasked for the reason above.
Wish they kept the mistery, first time i saw her photo in ME3 i was like "that's it? No reptile or fish face? Just a purple human face?" Btw, Bioware acquaintance? This has been known for years🗿

The thing that I'm excited for is that if you save/ prevent the quarians and the geth from killing each other Tali we'll have dialogue saying that it only be a few years before quarians can live outside their suits comfortably that means in the ass Mass Effect game, this is an option to select in the back story. There's a very good chance that we we'll get to see Quarians outside of their suits and what they really look like but I'm hoping they keep the look that Tali had in the picture in legendary edition!

I can forgive this, especially with the new look in the Legendary Edition. After all, the Mass Effect trilogy was nothing short of amazing! All the characters, planets, aliens, dialogue, plot lines...the list goes on. It's the kind of game that Star Trek could only hope to ever get!
Excuses, Mass Effect 3 had a lazy ending and nonsense photoshop. Fans called them out right after release. Made them fix the lazy ending in a free dlc, which is there by default in the legendary edition.
I assure you, the artists and programmers at game developers are rarely lazy. We often underestimate the massive amount of work it takes to make these games, especially with the deadlines imposed on them by publishers. If you're upset at anyone (as you should be, ME3's ending was painfully bad), get mad at the executives at EA that forced them to release a game before they had time to develop it to their liking. :)
The "artists" and their lackeys in media double downed claiming "artistic integrity" and saying they were beyond criticism. The very purpose of art is to be criticized. They then went on to attacking the fans instead of owning up to their mistakes or the rushed time tables. This attacking of fans by corporate stooges has continued since in other genres and productions.
@@FullMotionVideos The OP didn't say the artists or programmers, but someone was extremely lazy and dropped the ball. Blame the management, like Casey Hudson. There is no excuse. They had since ME1 to work out how the quarians looked in general, and they knew at least from ME2 that Tali was a love interest and would need to show her face for storytelling purposes. You can't blame EA for everything, Bioware was responsible for this f**kup, and many others in the storytelling. The Star Child; cutting the Leviathans; the bad ending (even after improving it, and even the alternate ending they supposedly originally had) or killing off the entire populationof the Citadel off-screen. Or the fact that they only introduced a female of a major race in ME3 (krogan) and another in a DLC (turian). EA are crap, but a lot of this is clearly and solely Bioware's fault. There is also a difference between blaming programmer or artists, who were clearly very hardworking and passionate, and blaming the management and the creative leads who left more holes in the story and worldbuilding than Swiss cheese to fill in a crunch. Then there's also the disrespect they showed fans when they were (rightly) called out on their incompetence. Why admit you were wrong, or rushed or made mistakes when you can blame the fans?
i'm convinced bro said he has a secret source on this just to farm engagement. because there is no way he could have possibly been serious about that. as far as the photoshop deal, it really never bothered me. they touched it up enough to not be a 1 for 1 of the original image. plus i like to imagine Tali has luscious locks underneath that helmet.

They're scared because they know no one will be able to romance anyone besides Wrex if he becomes an option.
Unfathomably based.
It's the same way with Varric in Dragon Age
My biggest problem is that everyone talks about not knowing what they look like, but you can't tell me, with the sci-fi internet access they had, there wouldn't be a photo or anything.
Will say as much as I loved the multiplayer. If they would’ve devoted all their resources to keep it single player it would’ve been better too
I really want to see all of the designs that Bioware made for Tali's face before they settled on the photoshopped stock photo.
Idk if it's exactly what you are looking for, but the mass effect art book has, multiple designs for the quarian face. It's been a minute since I pulled the book off the shelf though so I could be misremembering it may only have 1 face.
@@VasKyahThanks
I know I'm pretty late, but if anyone's interested there's an old post on Matt Rhodes blogspot about concept art and a small part of it is about Tali's face :)
They had years on end to get what she looked like. This time it is not crunch. It is them just putting it off.
That last minute photoshop of Tali angered so many people, including me.
Tali? You mean that chick that got pulverized in the Collectors' base vents?

@@terrykingpin1452 lmao true. But Miranda at least gets some development. I feel bad for Jacob's character cause he's so hot 😔

Wish they take inspiration from Miime ( Space Pirate Captain Harlock ) for Tali. She's a beauty.
I don't care that EA is pretending to be for the fans these days, I'm never buying anything with their logo attached to it
Considering the way their limbs look similar to Turians and their amino acid specific physiology I was hoping Tali would look like a much smoother Garrus
can't get smoother than Garrus. Mah boi got game.
That doesn't make much sense. Salarians and Krogan are both levo and don't look like humans. What they can eat doesn’t define how they look
The original concept art version looks scary af imo
I’m so glad I’m not the only one that thinks Tali is Best girl of the game
@CLB Ronin I think so too, with Liara at #2 and Garrus at #3. This is mostly down to the fact that they're the 3 squad mates that stay with you throughout the trilogy. Liara's available to both MShep and FemShep, and seems to be quite popular among both types of players. Garrus seems to be the most popular among FemShep players, but we all know majority of ME players are dudes.
@CLB Ronin I feel like thats Liara, and Tali is #2
It's not unpopular considering that Tali, Garrus, and Liara are the most popular romances across the three games.
Given what we’ve learned about Anthems production. Are we sure BioWare were on a tight deadline?
She looks like Asajj ventress, fricken amazing design.
Had they been given just a couple months and some extra wads of cash, it would've been the best trilogy to ever grace the earth so far as 2023.
@@bryanbogard5359 Sad but true

It acctually fits. Almost like Tali was a alien or some craz shit.
I've never seen people saltier than in a discussion about tali's design human or alien

the timeline EA gave them was huge and agreed upon at the start in the contract. Bioware fudged development and kept asking for extensions. EA eventually had to say no as shareholders were getting fed up of Casey Hudson's excuses. I love throwing mud at EA but this one wasn't their fault.

I feel like even "rubber-forehead aliens" need to make you re-evaluate your definition of "beauty" instead of just presenting "Attractive earth-model, but she's got interesting eyes!" lol
Let's be honest, EA execs probably had a "conventionally bangable" quota they were looking for...
People when stockimages is used what it's actually there for 🤯🤯
The reason why the original trilogy hits different is because it wasn't touched by ea. Bioware was acquired by ea then they released their own version that you all know as andromeda. On me3 bioware had run out of time and resources so they rushed it. Then ea acquired bioware they released the legendary edition that they fixed a little
People either dont know me3 had multi-player or simply dont remember lol i wish they kept online on the LE.
I like the more human looking Tali.
The Quarians are like Battlestar Galactica, and them being more human makes them more sympathetic with "what if humans had to flee Earth, and what would happen to them?"
Oh I don't blame Hudson for the picture. I understand. That ending tho....
Yeah, I seem to remember him saying the ending wasn't just going to be red, green, or blue...lol. I'll blame him and Mac for the story and ending of 3.
“A friend of mine at ID software leaked to me that the Doom Slayer likes to rip and tear!”
Just a purple human face?"

The funniest thing in ME3 is the 2D sushi at the party.
I hated they gave Tali a human face and hair. It was such a normative letdown for a xenophilic, almost queer-coded love interest.

Dude we've known about this for 10 years. 10 YEARS! Someone even found the stock photo before the ending was "fixed", and that was what, 5 months after the game was released?
