Best Family Cruiser Under $1 Million? Beneteau Antares 12 Tour & Review

  • The Antares 12 is a perfect example of Beneteau doing what it does best. A three-cabin family cruiser packed with practical features that can be used all year round. With triple 300hp Mercury V8 outboards, it will do nearly 40 knots too.
    Join Jack Haines for an in-depth tour and review of the Antares flagship, shot during its US launch at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.
    Replacing the Antares 11, the 12 features improvements throughout to create one of the most compelling all-round packages in the Beneteau motorboat range. The layout is clever. The boat has asymmetric decks, which delivers more space in the saloon and creates an excellent passageway down the starboard side. In the cockpit, where there is a drop-down balcony as standard, the seating pushes out to port and converts into a sun pad.
    The flybridge is small but well-designed, with a decent dinette and a helpful wet bar on the top deck to serve guests.
    Inside, there is a well-specified galley with plenty of storage and high-end appliances and a neat lower helm that benefits from a large side door that leads onto the starboard side deck.
    On the lower deck, there are three cabins comprising two guest cabins amidships and an owner’s cabin with ensuite access to the bathroom.
    Keenly priced, practical and useable, is the Beneteau Antares 12 one of the best all-rounders on the market?

    Antares range of boats are practical, the galley is well thought out all the seats are flexible in their use. Décor is tasteful, a good contrast between white and wood. Expensive for me yes, but if you have the money then she is definitely worth a look, and buy.

    Is there any benefit to having trippel outboards? Top speed okay, but the difference is not that big from 2. Personally cruising range is more important.

      Speed. Fuel economy is *slightly* worse with 3 V8 vs 2 v10, but the boat is faster to plane and a higher top speed. Cruising range is about the same with both engines.

    For sure the twin V10. Cheaper to maintain, slightly better fuel economy (per Beneteau's own testing), similar range but the price difference is not worth the slight increase in speed. Even better, take the savings from the 3rd engine and get a set of Sharrow Props and economy goes up even more and you'd close the gap in acceleration.

      Outboards on a boat like this is just stupid... Dual Diesel inboards would give you much better fuel economy and a large swim platform which would also be a place for storing a tender.

    • @albertpenello
      @albertpenello 2 месяца назад

      @@BilldalSWE I mean - OK. You're going to pay more for inboards, lose interior space, and have higher maintenance cost and less performance. If range and fuel economy is your only consideration then inboards is the way to go. I have no interest in inboard powered boats and my use case is not super long-range cruising so I'm really glad to have a larger boat with outboard power. Seems like there are other companies going this way so I can't be the only one.

    • @BilldalSWE
      @BilldalSWE 2 месяца назад

      @@albertpenello You were the one mentioning fuel economy and the fact a slight increase in performance was not worth it. Otherwise I wouldn't have commented. Also as an example of performance , dual 440hp Volvo Penta D6 takes a Sargo 36 fly which is the same weight (20000lb/9000kg)as this Antares up to 42 knots and has a higher combined torque of 2000Nm compared to only 1275Nm for 3x300 Verados which (with the duoprops) means better acceleration. The loss of storage space under the cockpit floor is definitely a good point but not one that overweighs the loss of the swimplatform and dingy storage as I've never met someone with a 40+ ft flybridge boat who didn't run a dinghy.

      I bet just sharrow props on the V10's would help a lot. The money you save in buying 2 V10's vs 3 V8's more than pays for a set of Sharrow props and you get better economy and probably close the gap on speed an acceleration as well.

    Love this cruiser Jack, personally I'd go with the twin engine option, plenty fast enough. Just a thought, but with a cruiser of approx. 12 metres do manufacturers of smaller boats ever consider it would it be better use of space if there's wasn't a flybridge helm? Appreciate though that navigating from the upper helm can be great in the warmer months.

    Thanks Jack. The Joy Stick for Mercury can integrate the bow thruster. It's nice to know that a $680K boat crawls up towards a Million with a seakeeper. They seem to be an popular but expensive option.

    • @albertpenello

    I'd go for the two engine option. I'm not sure that anyone could notice those few knots difference and there are reduced maintenance costs also. I am amazed by how many boats this size are going for outboards instead of inboards.

    Twin 400's would be the better option. A lot of people don't know that those engines actually burn less fuel than the 300's. But the 300's are also very fuel efficient. However 2 engines pushing 800hp vs 3 engines pushing 900hp, you have to account for the extra weight of that engine so it isn't giving you the full 900 so it would cost more to habe an extra engine that is pushing marginal extra power. Not worth it. Put some Sharrow props on them 400's and really get fuel savings

    • @albertpenello
      @albertpenello 2 месяца назад

      Twin 400 is available - Beneteau has the fuel economy and it actually favors the V10 slightly - at the expense of top speed.

    Hi jack a while back you did a review of Regal 42 FXO at the time you said it was the only outboard power flybridge well not anymore. This boats so much better. In so many ways two standard bathrooms larger rooms, bigger flybridge if I had one negative thing to say, that it doesn’t come with a hard top I just don’t like Bimini oh p.s would go with-the three engine option

    • @albertpenello
      @albertpenello 2 месяца назад

      One thing that's missed a lot is the Regal is not only significantly more expensive, but since it was designed as an inboard boat you have a lot less interior space. Boats designed from the start as outboard boats don't have to accommodate for a large engine room. This boat is cheaper and has a lot more room than the Regal.

    • @thevu9811
      @thevu9811 2 месяца назад +1

      It definitely boils down to the spec options you put on the boat. Another boat to consider is the MF 1295 Fly, this I believe is the most for your $ in this size flybridge@@albertpenello

    • @albertpenello
      @albertpenello 2 месяца назад +1

      @@thevu9811 Agree! Interesting you bring up the MF1295. I looked at both boats at FLIBS (along with the Galleon and the Regal) - here's the thing in reality the Antares 12 is a MUCH better deal AND can be had cheaper than the MF1295. Reason is, Jeanneau does not pre-rig the motors so the price they are quoting is without engines. Beneteau (starting with the Antares 12) is pre-rigging the boats from the factory so the price quoted is WITH motors. This saves the customer money in rigging costs from the dealership but makes Antares 12 appear more expensive at first glance. Also, the MF1295 does not offer at 2 motor version, so right off the bat you can get into an Antares 12 for $80K less than the MF1295. The Antares 12 learned a lot of lessons since it came afterward, so the A12 is 1.5 feet longer (adding the gangway in the rear means the cockpit seat does not need to go back to raise the motors, which does happen in the 1295), and there are options not available in the MF1295 like the factory installed inverter and anchor locker wash-down. And finally, the flybridge layout is improved over the 1295 by removing some wasted space up front, moving the helm seat forward (better visibility) and so the Fly on the A12 seems much more spacious than the 1295. I saw both boats back-to-back at FLIBS and got the price sheets on both to compare. The A12 has more standard features and a lower entry point than the 1295 but because of how they talk about "starting at" the MF1295 appears cheaper but it's not.
