      Imo a lot of them focus too much on the design instead of the quality and functionality of the garment itself. Its probably due to the taobao shops being entirely online and so sales are driven more by the photogenic value of the dress than the functionality

    I too ordered a dress with Chinese Lolita Updates and they were REALLY easy to use. It was pretty straight forward compared to using a shopping service that required filling out and sending back a spreadsheet (I had to send the spreadsheet link to my roommate for her to fill out on her PC which was super annoying). But I would definitely order from CLU again the future.

  • @marygreenapple

    I'm pretty new to lolita so you did introduce me to this group. Also a few months ago to lolita in general 😅
    Edit: in Germany the threshold is 22 Euros, that's really insane. And shipping gets casually added to your item's value. That's actually the law here 😔

    • @emiliakumorek9494
      @emiliakumorek9494 5 лет назад +6

      I think it's 22 Euro for the EU, I also think it's insane, and the tax is so high so you're scared to buy anything

    • @marygreenapple
      @marygreenapple 5 лет назад +1

      @@emiliakumorek9494 it makes buying lolita and j-fashion really difficult, especially if there are no stores near you.

    • @TheSnowBallet
      @TheSnowBallet 5 лет назад +4

      The threshold is actually 26.30€ in Germany because they won't charge you if the import tax would be less than 5€.
      It's still an annoyance, but you've got to remember that tax is already included in everything you buy in Germany, we're usually just not as aware of it. Real custom charges only apply for items valued 150€ or more.

    • @marygreenapple
      @marygreenapple 5 лет назад +3

      @@TheSnowBallet You are correct. I am not sure about the exact numbers, but other countries do have things like sales taxes too. And I quite frankly don't understand why they add the shipping to the value of an item, even for a private purchase. For business owners and people who sell the items, it totally makes sense, as they'd add shipping and customs to the price, but if I ever resell those items, I will never get the shipping value back. Even the shipping is often as expensive as the threshold, so ordering anything without customs is virtually impossible. It's the law and I'd never break it, to me it simply makes no sense.

    Canadian here... if they give you the option and are willing, you can ask them to mark it as "gift" to avoid fees (But obviously, some places won't do that.) Unfortunately, in my experience, our customs fees are a TOTAL crapshoot; a) Really depends on which courier is used (DHL and UPS will invariably get you full high fees every time, other couriers seem to just depend which customs officer it went through). b) I bought a $500 doll from korea and got less than a $50 customs fee, c) I've bought plenty of things from the US and Japan including $220 shoes from the states and got NO customs fee whatsoever, and yet d) I've also bought some smaller items $20-$40 items (a cd from Japan, a box of pin backs from the states, t-shirts) and gotten about $12-$20 customs fee AND a handling fee on top of that!! I think those were all UPS and DHL.
    So... in my experience it's impossible to guess and yeah it's super annoying!! The only thing I can do is just avoid UPS and DHL shippers whenever there is any way to know the shipper and usually go for the slowest shipping coz it's not as likely to be courier (I stopped buying from a place I like coz they started using DHL and it's the only shipping option :/ ). Avoiding those two I rarely get fees, but it's still very much up to chance.

    Chinese Lolita Updates actually started as a SS for the Chicago comm because the founder attended a Chicago university for a few years, and comm members loved the stuff she wore from small lesser-known taobao shops. they're my favorite SS and the founder has dedicated employees/business partners now instead of just doing everything herself. their fees aren't bad either considering how good their service is

    Did you get it sent through a courier like FedEx, DHL, etc? Because if so, that $35 would have included the brokerage fees that those companies require, and they are notorious for having high ones here.
    I tend to get things sent through epacket/e-EMS/EMS, and I rarely get charged fees, as they're handled by Canada Post once they reach Canada, and the workers there are honestly too lazy most of the time to convert what's written on the package if it's not in CAD/USD.
    Otherwise, the limit to importing is $20. Canada has one of the lowest customs limits in the world, sadly.

    Canadian customs is a biiiiiiiiitch. I once had someone send me a couple of vintage kimono, labelled clearly AS A GIFT, and they charged me nearly $200 in fees. It's all a little random what they select for verification, but I find things listed just as "clothes" instead of specifics, and things sent with cheaper shipping options tend to be overlooked. Anything sent EMS gets hit for me.

    I tried ordering from them around 13 July 2023. The prices quoted on farcebook came to around $170. The price they charged me was $242. I had to question this because $70 on that kind of price is a very suspect mark up. So I asked for a breakdown of prices. Their answer was domestic and international shipping prices, but nothing specific, but there was still an as yet unnamed shipping price yet to come. So once again I questioned this. No reply. After some back and forth I came to the conclusion that they were avoiding answering my questions. It was then I got quite angry and finally started in with colourful language
    I'm new this all and this was my first attempt at purchasing a Lolita dress. I came away very dissatisfied and feeling like I was seen as a mark for a con!

Canada post its pretty random if you get it or not. e packet usually i never get it. it can also take up to 30 days for you to receive the fee. so when you get the package without the fee it dosnt mean you got away lol. this is in ON Canada idk about other places in Canada.

    The thing that I don't like about Chinese Lolita Updates isn't that it is also a shopping service, it is the fact that it is ONLY a shopping service disguising as a lolita updates page. The reason I say this is because they are named Chinese Lolita Updates and initially introduced themselves as that, but unlike other lolita updates pages like the main Lolita Updates, they never post links to the Taobao stores. This at the beginning caused a lot of confusion, as to why an updates page would refuse to post sources, and then of course everyone realized they are a shopping service. Which is fine, but they should just call themselves that, and not an updates page
