    My daughter is just getting into sweet Lolita style, and after watching a bunch of your videos we took your advice! Ordered her first JSK, shirt and cute tights from Devil inspired, shoes and a beret from Amazon! Her theme is mint and white. I’ll post a photo of her first cord when it arrives in a month or two!

    Losing all of your lolita makes me think that maybe people with big collections should get their collections insured. Take pictures of everything, save them and then look up prices online and screenshot those to go with your photos. This way the issuance people have documented ownership evidence, and values for each price.

    Oh man. I had to do this. I had to start over. My pipes froze in my house and then exploded and let me tell you red dresses against white dresses. the colours bleed. everything was destroyed. Get home insurance on your collection, take pictures, file them with a rough estimate of worth, then put it at someone elses house. Learn from my mistakes lmao.

      Military is a style, but you sometimes have to be careful with accessories/ect because of the real world inspirations.
      Taobao does gun prints too, if that helps? And Metamorphose did a Na*i inspired set way, way back, though that one's still controversial (blew up a couple years ago).

      You can wear lolita by yourself or with non-lolita friends, more casually if it makes you feel more comfortable! You might worry it would stand out more, but in fact it often gets less attention from the public that way than when you're with a huge group of other weird-looking people. :)

The way your community coordinates, accessorizes and does makeup is inspiring and has inspired me to view my own wardrobe and makeup differently. I try different things with my own outfits and makeup (having a whole pink day, with shoes and a flowery dress and pink eyeshadows) And It's just been wonderfully fun. I'm not sure what the whole point of my comment was besides that I guess you've inspired someone beyond your community to look at their wardrobe and makeup in different ways! :)

    Whoa, the idea that I'd somehow lost my collection is way, waaay too upsetting. Having said this, the lessons I've learnt from my mistakes and generally over the years I've been in the fashion are that: 1) an adjustible hoop skirt is one of the best investments of my frilly life; 2) I love skirts and getting a skirt first would mean being able to put together casual coords really quickly with my non-lolita stuff; 3) lolita socks are my self-professed addiction and I can't just give them up; 4) focus a bit more on cuts that flatter my figure instead of on prints that I like, as this makes me overall much happier when I wear lolita; 5) Meta is love, Meta is life, accept them into your heart and be your best self. :P

    I have never bought any lolita-specific items. I own three handmade JSKs as well as one skirt. I have two petticoats: one is handmade and the other is altered from a long wedding petticoat I found at a thrift store. All my shoes are from thrift stores. Most of my blouses are from forever 21, H&M, and thrift stores. About half of my jewelry is handmade. Most of my hair accessories are handmade, and I also own handmade wrist cuffs. Socks and tights are all from target or forever 21. You CAN wear lolita without spending a ton of money as long as you have a sewing machine (that you know how to use) and an eye for good pieces.

I am working on putting together my first outfit, was just accepted into a community in my area (yay! ) .I found The Blouse of My Dreams, but it would need to be custom-made to fit me. And I am willing to wait a long time and pay extra to obtain it, I'm just leery of ordering something being custom-made overseas. I see the wisdom in getting something quickly, unfortunately most things I see don't come in my size! It's been very frustrating, fortunately my sewing skills are decent where I might be able make some basic garments 😭😭

    I lost the contents of my house in a flood, including a lot of my gothic and vintage clothing. I had to list the value of what is lost, but even with a list of everything we lost (a bathroom, kitchen, lounge, sewing room, office and more things with all the furniture, electronics etc), we only got £10k. For perspective, the couch we lost cost £900 by itself, by the time we’d replaced all the furniture and electrics and essentials, there was nothing left to replace my wardrobe and I’m starting from scratch. At first I found the fresh start as a positive thing, but as time goes on and I’m assembling coords, I keep thinking “ah, I can use my XYZ coat/vest/boots” but no, I can’t, because it got destroyed, and it’s really triggering to keep thinking about it all the time. Moral of the story, make a wardrobe itinerary with PROOF OF PURCHASE/PAYMENT, even a PayPal transaction receipt counts!

    My first two items would probably be a blouse and the squirrel party jsk by bodyline. I know there are better quality dresses out there. But it's one of my favorites. I would then work myself half to death making a new petticoat. Because I'm not going the leg avenue petticoat route again. And I can spend a million hours and less than $30 if I make it. Then I would buy some shoes via aliexpress since I've had luck doing so. (I suggest asking the community for links to actually decent products before throwing $ at aliexpress though) And I would by my super cheep striped socks that everybody hates but I love. Striped socks are life. And I would buy a nicer brand headbow in a plain but complementary color to the jsk. And I would spend about $15 on the floofy fluff wig that I love. After that, I'd look on Etsy for a couple pieces of jewelry.
    Or I could spend an excessive amount of time making everything except the socks and shoes. But I suppose making everything isn't exactly new lolita friendly.
    Re-building a wardrobe and building one for the first time are two different beasts. And having different art skillsets from the beginning vs not being able to put a button back on can make a huge difference in your lolita experience.

I really like how you spoke about how much the community meant to you although it does make me kinda sad because I can't really experience comms - there is a comm near me but it's not super active and most of the meets are in a city which is local to me but still I would have to get a bus then a train and it could take from 1 hour and 30mins to 2 hours. I understand that this is not far for many people in places like America but for England (and for me) this is quite far to go to meet people that I have had little to no prior interaction with.

    I think this has been the most helpful video I've found so far. I admit I'm extremely overwhelmed trying to join the community it's why I've put off getting my first piece for literal years. Being in a midwestern state in the us it's really hard to find people who are lolita and plan events. (Though I'm going to the yearly anime convention in full lolita one of the days during summer.) Having the idea that possibly getting an op first instead of trying super hard to coordinate for the first time. Also I was hoping maybe in your beginners guide you might be able to address being color blind and having issues with matching colors and how to help that, I havent been able to find that much info or advice on this topic and I think it could really help alot of people. I know I could just stick to one color or do gothic but I'm a sweet lolita at heart. XD

    Well that makes sense about the lolita fb groups denying people to join because they don't particularly wear lolita. I remember a year or two ago I tried joining a lolita group on fb and they denied me because I didn't wear lolita. It was frustrating to me because I love lolita fashion. I have since I was 12 and I'm 22 now. Its one of my favorite things to talk about, look up, admire, and dream about. I even purchase Gothic Lolita Bibles from time to time when I have the $$. I have the knowledge and the love for it... But the thing is for me I'm very very uncomfortable with my body. No matter how much I love lolita, I can never get comfortable enough with myself to purchase any of the actual pieces. So when I was denied from joining the group I got frustrated, but I understand now. Their just trying to keep it a safe space. I know someday hopefully I'll be okay with myself enough to wear lolita(maybe give it another 10 more years lool).

  • @sierralarars

    Heads up folk. You don’t need a ‘brand’ wardrobe to wear Lolita! Common misconception woo~
    If I lost my wardrobe I would just remake it! I only have 2 bought pieces (both are still available to buy too, I’d buy the blouse but not the dress) from years back and the rest (10+ dresses) is handmade. I’ve learned a lot over the years so the fit, quality and construction would be better so it would be a win win. I would be pretty sad to loose my wool coat though.. I even made the buttons on that thing 😂 it’s hideous and glorious.
    I do feel thats a point of contention for me, not having a brand wardrobe and the pressure of not being a ‘brand’ Lolita feels a little exclusionary in the main communities. (Yes I am in the sewing communities too, everything is so chill there in comparison) It’s less so a problem now but the attitude is still there.
    A year ago I met this Lolita who sneered at me and said ‘oh. Yes. I can tell it’s handmade’. Left a really negative impression so I never bothered to look her up after the event. Met her again recently at the same event, in the same coord she’d snubbed previously and she asked me to make a dress for her... it wasn’t good enough for her last year 😅 10/10 wouldn’t work with lol. I don’t even think she recognised that we had already met haha

    The #1 thing that I would do differently if I had to start over is that except for AP Cat's Tea Party, Astro Academy and Little Bird's Symphonia and IW Casablanca, which I absolutely am in love with, I would not buy things that don't fit me that I have to alter.
    But the reason for that is that there ARE a lot of things that fit me now even without full shirring. When I started buying brand, all there was that fit was Baby LL dresses and full shirring.

    Another piece of advice I'd like to toss in is try to, if you can, get one "convention proof" main piece. That is to say a main piece (OP or JSK or Skirt) that is sturdy enough to be worn anywhere. Everyone defines this a bit differently in terms of what materials they think are tough enough to count as this kind of item, but the over-arching concept / point is to have a main piece that you don't worry about and that will remove any and all excuses to not wear lolita. Of course in certain event situations it's not appropriate, but a lot of Lolitas do limit themselves out of concern for damaging their delicate dresses and skirts when it would otherwise be a perfect opportunity to wear the fashion in public. Another way to define a "convention proof" main piece is that it might not be very sturdy, but it is something you would not get upset over if it became damaged. This might be a piece that didn't cost very much, or that was handed down to you by another Lolita because it was a little too well worn to sell on lace market.
    For me, personally, I ended up finding a handmade OP that I bought partly because it was affordable, but largely because it was made out of an incredibly durable material that I had as a slipcover once years ago. That sofa cover had survived a dog and a toddler amazingly, so when I saw someone had bought the same base fabric to make something out of, I knew I could wear it to any convention without worry.

    The bit about paypal should be followed with some caution. Paypal works great as a payment and transfer service (generally), but you absolutely should NOT treat paypal as a bank. It's almost a guaranteed thing that they'll seize accounts with "too much" money in them - reports of this have varied from a few hundred to a few thousand. You should always take money out of your paypal as soon as you receive it, and *never* store money in your paypal.

    • @BooksMusicMe17
      @BooksMusicMe17 4 года назад

      Brand dresses are usually higher quality (but some Taobao and indie brand pieces are also great quality). In my experience, most experienced lolitas own a mixture of Japanese brand, Taobao, and indie brand pieces, and think well-made handmade items are neat! When I started out in lolita, Bodyline was standard for beginners because even used brand main pieces were $100+, but nowadays it can be so cheap to buy brand pieces on the second-hand market that it's often not really worth going offbrand as your first piece unless you need to get custom sizing.
      Also, some people still don't like supporting offbrands (like Bodyline or F+F or some Taobao resellers) that made or sold replicas in the past, because they these business practices hurt the small Japanese brands that helped to create the fashion we love in the first place! This has definitely become more of a hot topic in the lolita community as some smaller Japanese brands started to go under and people started to consider that design replicas (not just print replicas) could be having an impact too.

    I’ve been tip toeing around Lolita since highschool and just never fully jumped in. Recently decided to search more cause it coincides with a cosplay. You’re right to hate Facebook, the groups are intimidating to newbs and not very active in any hobby (Larp, DnD, or Lolita) in fact the only active groups I’ve found were for anime conventions and that’s just a lot of memes. Also step one is search the word Lolita on every social media/google and then bash your head on a desk when you realize your sub genre isn’t as popular so it’s harder to buy. Yay ouji!

    I noticed that lolibrary is incomplete in terms of newer, brand releases. Does anyone happen to know why this is?

    • @BooksMusicMe17
      @BooksMusicMe17 4 года назад +1

      Lolibrary was down (then up but not open for submissions) for a couple of years when it migrated to a new server. All the devs working on it are volunteers who were doing it in their spare time so it took them a while to get it back running as normal.

    I'd be so sad if I had to rebuild my wardrobe. It reminds me that I really should go through and date / photo catalog everything of importance in my wardrobe in case of fire or natural disaster so I could claim homeowners insurance on it and get that money back to begin rebuilding. But there's some dream items where I found them for steals when they normally go for much higher prices or some pieces are rare. It would be heartbreaking if I lost them.
    I would probably go to Sweet Mildred and get an OP, petti, and some accessories, or just make some of my own or go to some other artist alley and convention vendors who make things / resell and see if I can grab things from them to at least get a coordinate or two put together. I like supporting fellow indie designers/artists, so knowing that a friend or someone I know made my first new pieces and helped me get back would be a lot more special to me than just buying something cheap elsewhere just because. I could also buy some cute fabric from some etsy sellers and make some pieces as well. When I started I was all about Bodyline (Taobao wasn't super big), but now I'm really more supportive of indie designers as well as the big brands.
    Then I'd go through and make a list of all my dream items, items I had in my wardrobe that I loved and begin searching for them again. I'd probably also go through Lady Sloth, Bunnyhouse, Glitter tale and just get blouses in all the colors I like to coordinate with. Then go through Cotton Candy Feet and Bodyline just to get some shoes. Maybe one big pink and a white bag in a heart or basic shape. For socks, I'd initially do what I did as a newbie, and just hit up sock dreams for their basic OTKs. I'd also be more on the lookout for buying full brand sets that include headwear and when possible, socks.

    I lost my entire lolita collection alot of rare pieces that arnt made any more like old school AP and btssb, shoes, socks usakumyas EVERTHING! I lost my lace market account too. My ex was really abusive and one night I had enough after he hit me in my face hoping I would fight back but I didn't, I packed my daughters things and my work clothes and left. I had to leave my clothes and lots of memorables from my childhood. He hacked into my phone and changed all my passwords it was a mess! Its been a few years now I assume he sold all my things on the fb group that we were apart of. We shared a fb because he didn't want me to have my own. I haven't worn lolita since. I have cried when I thought about it but I try not to think about it. I'm just happy me and my daughter are okay. I still do love lolita though. I have 1 usakumya pochette that took because it was my purse at the time and I love it so much!

    im pretty new to all of this but really really want to try and start to specifically dress in ouji fashion (rather than general lolita with dresses and all bc god would my dysphoria spike if i did) and i was wondering if anyone knows if the places to get pieces for it would be the same as overall lolita or if i should look somewhere else? Or some specific basics that would be needed for it i guess!

    I don't fit the measurements for the brands to the best of my knowledge. I would probably end up sewing most of the pieces and purchasing things like the petticoats and accessories.

    How old is too old for Lolita? I've been mildly obsessed with Lolita for a few years now. We did actually lose most everything in a house fire, so i know how that is. We've rebuilt our lives tho, and now live on a homestead with animals. Lol So not Lolita activities, I'm sure. Lol BUT I still love Lolita. Seems like a fairy tale that I could ever get into the fashion. But how old is too old? Cause I'm turning 44, and it seems unattainable, my kids will say I'm having a midlife crisis (which they said when I had dreads, ribbons, and braids put into my purple dyed hair over the winter. It was SUPER cute, prob more "techno goth" but CUTE.
    SO is it too late for me?

    • @TheJustPixie
      @TheJustPixie 5 лет назад +1

      Congrats on the dreads, ribbons, braids, purple hair and coming back from a housefire you heroine. No mean feat! I am 15 years old and currently wearing "Floating Heart Cherry," by Angelic Pretty with a straw hat, which is fitting since it is sunny for a change on Canvey Island in the U.K. Lolita is not accepted here. I get negative comments from total strangers in the street most days but I am so drawn to the fashion, (as I suspect you are), that I dont give a hoot! I just laugh with them and keep on rolling down the road just loving every magic moment. My mum, (47), joins me. As a compromise, she tends towards Gothic Lolita for its more sober appearence. With a few gold accessories to cut back on the potential funereal look, she looks stand-out stunning. She gives no dams either! Lolita requires a little bravery. You know the pull it has for you and you just set aside what others think and remain sweet towards all. As well as our darling Lovely Lor, may I suggest you watch a RUclipsr named "Fluffy Kawaii Jo?" She posts every Thurday and Monday at 6pm (U.K. time). I think you might find her philosophy appealing. Loving your comment. No its definitely not too late. Maxine. "Thejustpixie" x

      Lolita is not age-restricted. Wear what you want. A lot of older lolitas like to start with classic or gothic for the more mature color scheme, but that's not mandatory. The point is to wear what makes you happy.

      I feel no one is ever too old for any fashion if they love it. When I hear someone criticize someone for being "too old" for something I tell them they're limiting their own future by placing artificial limitations on things. They're not lolitas, but Betsey Johnson and Baddie Winkle are 2 ladies who rock some awesome fashion.

    Devilinspired is way too overpriced for me...and the selection is SO limited. I go to My-lolita-dress instead. The selection is huge and the prices aren't jacked up like devilinspired. yes you have to wait a few months for most dresses but I'd rather wait for the dress with a reasonable price. I should preface that it's limited for my size (my waist size is currently 36in. so most dresses don't fit me unless I get custom sizing)

    • @CheriseChattoway
      @CheriseChattoway 5 лет назад +1

      @Cutesy Nay There's also LolitaWardrobe! You do have to watch out for knock offs on any taobao reseller like these two sites but most the dresses are fine. Just Devilinspired is way too small a selection and pricey when it comes to their name brand dresses and you can even find their generics for cheaper elsewhere.

    Can you still be considered Lolita if you don’t have all the pieces? Like an incomplete cord? Cause I love Lolita fashion and J fashion but I’m self conscious going balls to the wall at work 😭 I know I know who cares what people think but deep seeded issues here haha.

    • @charissadubin9355
      @charissadubin9355 5 лет назад +1

      No, but that’s ok! It’s 100% fine to mix lolita items in non-lolita outfits. Sometimes I wear full lolita coords and sometimes I wear my lolita pieces in non-lolita outfits. The lolita aesthetic has a very specific definition, so no, if you don’t have all the pieces it wouldn’t be considered lolita, but the point is to dress the way you want to, not to meet a certain label.
