I think the film is very clear about it's social commentary. The treatment of mentally ill people. The way more value is placed on the 1% than the other 99%. His speech on the Murray Show made it very clear that this film is saying a lot
I think Joker is an absolute masterpiece. The reason why I think it will get nominated and possibly win (but after The Irishman and still remembering Marriage Story is out there, I have doubts it will win) is because, even with the low metacritic score, there are still numerous of 10/10, masterpiece level reviews. On metacritic, 1/3 if the reviews are 100's, 1/3 is between 70 and 99, and 1/3 is everything else (with really only one or two really negative reviews). I'm not doubting Adam Driver will have a brilliant performance in Marriage Story, but when there is a complete transformative performance like Phoenix did in Joker, I doubt Driver will win, but just like how he was snubbed for Walk the Line, he could get snubbed here. Remember, it won af Venice and in recent years films that have won at Venice have gotten Picture and Director nominations. Picture, Director, Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing, Score, Production ot Costume Design (it will get one of those, not both, don't know why I think that), Makeup/Hairstyling. I believe it will win Actor and Makeup/Hairstyling.
I will say even though I think Phoenix was snubbed for Walk The Line, (just rewatched, fantastic film) I also don't think Phillip Seymour Hoffman didn't deserve the oscar. Reese Witherspoon won best actress for her role.
It was definitely political. He loses his meds and therapy because of government cuts, the way Thomas Wayne (basically a Trump figure in this movie) condemns the Joker and poor as "clowns" is akin to today's politics. The general lack of compassion and care for the poor and mentally ill feels like an attack on the apathy of society in general. It's a great movie IMO, I think when the nonsense dies down it'll go down as a classic.
i thought the film was fine, joaquin’s performance is the only thing i thought was masterful (but we already knew that). technical elements were good, nice cinematography but the direction and script were pretty average imo... i would’ve liked phillips to take more of a risk it felt conventionally good however i appreciate that it’s a different type of comic book film
I think the thesis was that the people we end up fearing our life for are the people we created as active participants of that society it’s also asking are we supposed to be held accountable for peoples reactions to our actions or are we only accountable for our actions i thought this movie was brilliant
just saw this film. Overrated as fuck. The 8.9 rating on IMDB - you can safely take down one full point which all comic book movies always have from crazy fans. You can make a film where Paris Hilton is putting on lipstick and if there's Batman in the background - it will be over 8 points on IMDB, it's that crazy these days. And then it becomes what it is - just a good solid flick around 7.5 rating. There is really nothing special to this film at all. Also it's so hard to buy insanity from Joaquin Phoenix. There's something so sane in his eyes that I was struggling the entire time to believe he had any sort of mental disorder at all. I know it's the trend to fangirl around Phoenix these days but the truth is that he is horribly miscast in this film, it just doesn't work.
I agree with Oscar Expert, I would not give Joker more than 7/10. Its a well done movie, but frankly, except for a an excellent performance of Joakim Phoenix, playing a horribly sick man, I forgot almost everything else that I saw in that movie, the moment I left the theater. I think this was the intention of the director, to present all sorts of seemingly moments of social issues, and then neutralized all that by explaining the medical history of mental illness of Joker and his mother. I was almost mad when the madness of Joker's mother came up, because it "killed" any kind of social criticism. It does not matter whether it was real, whether it was just framed up, the movie blurred all that and in the end left viewer literally with nothing, no message, no impression. In the end it could be just another sequence of "Silence of the lambs", or "Shining", thriller about the madness of one man, nothing more. Frankly I expected much more, and I think that big deal of hype going around that movie is overrated.
was just a bad taxi driver with comic book paraphernalia. 6/10 with a great best actor performance but definitely not a best picture and even worse a best director movie. Should have only been nominated for best actor, score, makeup and hairstyling, costume design, and editing. People overrate it as some huge social or political statement. It was very shallow and just a character study. There was nothing deep about it, just a basic society is bad thing.
Anyone who says it is not a classic just says so because they cant come to terms with the script. This was the only way of making a justifying origin story for the Joker. You must admit tho that no of your other beloved Hollywood actors could have even nearly pulled off what Joaquin did in Joker. So does a Taxi Driver esque film in your opinion never have a chance at Best picture? Joker is arguably even darker having a dark protagonist in an even darker world and vice versa. Normally in thos paychic dramas there is some influence on the outside that simbolises hope and the light but in Joker its just dark in dark. Cant there be a movie about that because of this? Is it a bad movie because of this? Definitely not and I think if you have seen the movie and how it is played and crafted you know that.
I think the film is more of a sociopolitical statement than you guys give it credit for. I do agree that the disturbing qualities of the film were overhyped. Both John Wick 3 and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood were far more violent than this film.
I describe Joker's violence as calculated. It isn't "bloody" to be bloody and there really is only one scene where it bridged the gap between bloody and gory (but I wouldn't call it gory) and that was the scene in the apartment with his former co-workers.
the hype kinda killed the movie for me, which doesn't mean it was a bad one i really liked a lot of aspects of it and the message is very clear, but i left the cinema expecting more from the ending because what everyone was saying
I'd give it a 5, maybe 5 and a half. Todd Phillips thinks that he's making a masterpiece when he's really just saying "we live in a society" for over 2 hours.
@@Kickinthescience Joaquin was great. Best part of the movie. I wouldn't be upset at all if he gets nominated, but he can only carry the entire movie so far.

100% agree. Masterpiece in modern cinema.
Why do you think it will win makeup? The only makeup in the movie (that I remember) was Joaquin's clown makeup.
Joaquin Phoenix for Joker. If I get to vote for The next best actor in Oscar tou Will have my vote.

yes i agree 7 and 9.5 are good numbers
are you guys going to do an updated oscar predictions for october,
Same reaction. I had insanely high expectations going in and left just content. Phoenix and the score was awesome
It was awesome,It was so cool.

Or maybe cuz they have issues or don’t like it
And then it was the most nominated film of the year...
Surprised media didn't like this it's a very anti capitalist message
thekickback I feel like typically liberal Hollywood media would side with that message

just heard what cole said and that's exactly how i felt lol
Thanks guys. I'm seeing it tomorrow. So all the extra security expense for nothing, as I expected
No. Joker will not push me over to commit violence. 😈
I'm with you Oscar expert! It's a good movie but it's not a master piece!!! Greetings from Argentina
Brother is so hot.
I think they are the same person.

I’m hyped for Adam driver In marriage story next weekend

The Cynic of Cinema what do you give Joaquin Phoenix?

The Cynic of Cinema what do you think of the movie Taxi Driver?
@@Kickinthescience Mine is a very controversial take... It's perfect. 10/10.
The Cynic of Cinema is that sarcasm? Because I was under the impression that Taxi Driver was universally loved. Even got DeNiro nominated for an Oscar
Negative reviews of this film is full of alarm bells. Come what may, I will not be seeing this film.
Adam Driver is still winning the Oscar Cole and Justin.
No, Joaquin will 😂
@@lindawatisetiadi1514 neither of them will.

phoenix's performance is the performance of the year for sure and if they don't give him the golden statue he will be robbed again....
I'm from the future: Phoenix won.
