  • Join us for a nostalgic ride as we explore the history of The Hupmobile, a once-prominent American car brand that has faded into obscurity.
Hupmobile was an automobile manufacturer that was in operation from 1909 to 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. The company was founded by Robert C. Hupp, an engineer who had previously worked for Oldsmobile and Ford. Hupmobiles were known for their quality and innovative features, and they were popular in the 1910s and 1920s.
In the early years, Hupmobiles were smaller, more affordable cars, but as time went on, the company shifted to producing larger, more luxurious vehicles. However, like many other automobile manufacturers, Hupmobile struggled during the Great Depression. Despite attempts to innovate and restructure, the company ultimately went out of business in 1939.
Some of the more notable models produced by Hupmobile include the Model 20, a small runabout that was the company’s first car; the R Series, which was produced in the early 1920s and was known for its performance and quality; and the Aerodynamic, a streamlined car that was introduced in the 1930s.
Today, Hupmobiles are considered collectible, and there are clubs and organizations dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history of this defunct automobile manufacturer.

My late father and grandfather described the Hupmobile as not just luxury cars, but very durable cars that were well engineered. Like Cord, the Hupmobile could not survive the Depression when the luxury market dried up.

The Hupmoniles were very classy cars. I especially like the square body car from the early 1930's. Very beautiful styling and lots of class. They appear to be luxurious and no doubt expensive for the time. With a Hupmobile looks like one would travel in high in style and not doubt made quite an impression at gatherings for the well to do crowed who could afford the best of everything. I was not so impressed with to more aerodynamic styling of the later models with the waterfall grills and styling somewhat similar to the Chrysler Airflow. This must have been the art deco era when automakers were venturing into bolder styling. In the earlier years the American auto industry was full of many smaller makes of cars all try to make money from the automotive revolution but many couldn't stay in business because of stiff competition from the emergence of the big three, General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation. By the 1950's both Hudson and Packard forever closed their door leaving struggling little Studebaker and American Motors to carry on for a few more years as smaller automakers. Inn the 1960's Studebaker moved to Canada but soon had to close it's doors. ANC struggled along until the 1980 to be purchased by Chrysler.
