  • Finally, finally. This boss fight was an absolute torture; numerous attempts and many hours went into beating this version of Owl.
If the video quality is lower than usual (i.e. inconsistent/low framerate) then that is probably because I also streamed my gameplay while recording at the same time. I streamed multiple hours of my attempts at beating Owl on Twitch: / tarkuslux , though it arguably wasn't worth viewing.
As per usual, to the fight itself. Owl (Father) has many attacks in common with Great Shinobi Owl (who would have thought?) and you will have an automatic advantage if you are practiced against the Great Shinobi version (which I involuntarily am). This one has the same problem as the one in Ashina Castle; his posture out-regenerates any damage you can inflict on it, due to which you are forced to slowly and steadily hack away at his health bar. With the challenge conditions in place you'd think Sekiro is using a foam sword.
Stay aggressive, close in on him whenever he jumps away and keep attacking. Your best chances to attack are after the firecracker-slash and his heavy downwards attack with the long windup. Note however that the latter is among the riskiest attacks to evade, as dodging too early while make him quickly change to a horizontal slash and dodging too late will cause you to get hit by the heavy attack, resulting in an instant death.
During the second phase there's 2 main things to mind in your combat-flow: Owl now throws shuriken after jumping off of you and he will fade away after some attack combos to emerge from his Owl illusion. I chose to run away from this Owl-surprise-attack since I am not confident that I can reflect it.
In summary, Owl (Father) is an extreme endurance fight that pushes your ability to recognize and react to attack patterns as well as concistently deflect attacks. I am truly glad to finally have this one behind me, but it's far from over. There's 2 boss fights left for me, as well as few mini bosses.
