I’ve owned all sorts of cameras and what I love about the 450D is how basic it is. Tempted to buy one again, just for the simplicity of it and to enjoy taking photos again without the cost of modern cameras offering a plethora of functions that I don’t use.
Actually, the 450D did have a live-view function, and using the digital zoom while composing images, it worked well when trying to dial in manual focus. The viewfinder was too small for that. Dynamic range isn't terrible either. There was a trick to using these. First was, of course, do not rely on the in camera jpegs - pretty bad, even by jpeg standards. Second, the really important trick was to shoot raw and overexpose a stop or two (a little to the right), and you could recover overblown highlights easily. This would result in surprisingly good results even in highly contrasty situations. Shooting underexposed however would ruin the shot as if you tried recover shadow detail, it would become noisy very quickly.
@@andrediego6131 In very well lit conditions, JPEG may work fine for you. If you find that when you're editing your camera-rendered JPEGS that things aren't up to your standards, then give RAW a try. A nice way to shoot on cameras like the 450D is to use a larger memory stick, and shoot RAW + JPEG, so you have the option of a RAW if the JPEG didn't cut it. The only downside is that the buffer fills up very quickly when doing burst-capture with RAW, so you'll have to pick and choose when to shoot JPEG only, and JPEG + RAW.
I also have a 450d and the autofocus works fine, except when its in live view mode, it just doesnt focus, i have to do it manually, do you know why that could be?
Hjertelig takk for nyttig gjennomgang/detaljert vurdering! Thanks much for very useful, nostalgic review of this classic piece. Prompted some Canon nostalgia of my own - got my Rebel XSi in 2008 and it served me very well for years, as testified by the quite nice photographic results still gracing the walls of our family home. While still a capable camera, well-suited for beginners, some editing is usually required due to the issues with dynamic range that you explained so well. You’ve inspired me to dust off my trusty Rebel and take it out for another spin 😊

Hi there! I have just obtained this camera (I didn't use it already), and I want to ask: Is good to take photos of natural landscapes, without editions? And how this camera is comparing to other ones?
It's an okay camera as long as you get it for very cheap. I would recommend starting out with something like a Canon 30D or something of that age. It's basically free on the used market and works great for learning.
Can make better ones, when you use the right lenses. Bigger sensor, less but bigger pixels, for more light. I started the digital photography with this one, when she came out. I stil think, no phone (have the s23 ultra), can give me the options and adjustments i can make with any dedicated camera. I mean the ki and the rendered bokeh isnt something for me, i want to actually make the bokeh with the apperture setting and the physic, not algorithmically added.
Auto-focus doesn't function with live view. Never has. Best way was to use digital zoom - auto focus on points then go to live view and take your photo. It was a bit of a pain in workflow.
Do you recommend the Canon XSI/ 450D in 2024 for a beginner? I just got interested into photography since I take photography class in High School and I want to try out photography for my self
If you can get it for something like $20 then go for it! Would not pay any serious money for it. Remember that good lenses are way more important and expensive.
WTF can you define how much "nothing" cost? Living in a 3rd world country watching reviews gives us context on how the product and what will be the current price is. The term "nothing" to you means different in other person so specify the price!
The results of this camera starts at 7:05 Looks processed already but even the processing looks graet so that tells you the camera itself should be fine for basic use
This was my first DSLR and i got so use to it that even with my newer cameras, this one always feels the most comfortable and is so portable that i throw a prime lens on it and just enjoy.
This camera actually does have live view. In shooting mode press the SET button to open the shutter and the half press the shutter button to turn on the sensor. From there you can magnify the image to get super crisp manual focus. Also, one of the BEST features of this camera is the Digic III enhanced processor, which is the beta version of the Digic 4 that’s in the 5D Mark ii. IMO, the 450D/XSi/Kiss X2 has the best image quality of any Rebel ever made.
I am still running my 450D but less so because as you mention mobile phones have improved so much. That said, it takes surprisingly good photos and it's difficult for me to know how I should replace it. I have been thinking of the Panasonic DMC-FZ2000 bridge camera which is sensibly priced and offers a great deal more then the Canon. I am just an everyday user so I if you are reading this and want to make some suggestions then I would welcome any response.
Is this lens on this interchangeable? I was recently given one of these by my mom, she bought it way back during the early 2000's. I tried taking a couple shots here and there but noticed that the quality isnt really that good. Im down to a dilemma whether its the camera itself or just the lenses.

I use HTP highlight tone priority and dial in an extra half stop exposure.
