On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Fight in and against Russian, American, German, British warbirds such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, Hurricane and rugged IL-2 Sturmovik attack plane. You can also fly legendary SPADS, Fokkers and Camels in WWI dogfights over the trenches of WWI and discover your inner Red Baron! And all of this can be experienced in jaw dropping virtual reality!
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

The P-47 can feel a little "Pig-ish" when you first get her into the air but what I found was if you can get high and develop some room to dive on bandits and just avoid turn fighting and getting slow the P-47 can be a deadly deadly dogfighter, especially since once you line up a shot with those 8x 50cals you don't need much time on target to make that bandit melt. Anyway thanks for watching and I hope everyone is staying well.
I didn't see the computer setup in the description. Did I miss something?
The P47 isn't understood that well in popular war bird culture, it is heavy and big so it doesn't fight well down low however it has a turbo and has really good high altitude performance. In real life at high level it will out turn a lot of planes due to that power advantage.
Very cool, the P-47 is a marvel of Engineering.
Awesome as usual... More WWI & WWII videos please. 😊
Hey, thanks for your Videos! Can you please telling which Difficulty Settings you fly with?
3:15 "Target fixated...need to check six... but don't wanna take my eyes off this guy". I wonder for how many brave pilots on all sides, those were their last thoughts... 😔
Ya….probably quite a lot actually
Robert S Johnson, in his book "Thunderbolt", used the phrase "they never learn" a couple times when describing someone trying to get away by diving away from the P-47.
I read his book years ago, I remember that also, have always wondered why the 47 was that good in a dive, Being heavy.??
When the Brazilian Air Force was choosing which one of the 3 American fighters (38, 47, 51) available to them, to fight in the Italian campaign in 44, the USAAF arranged lectures by American veterans in each of the 3. The P-47 one was R.S. Johnson. Story goes that after he told about his mission where he came back in a Thunderbolt full of German 8mm holes, the Brazilians were unanimous in the P-47 choice.
Its only logical after all, if you can choose, you choose to go to war in a fighter that can bring you back home alive.
@@1903A3shooter Being heavy alone doesn't indicate to be a good diver. He111s and B17s are heavy too and break appart in dives.
But in fighters it indicates that they are build sturdy and sturdy planes have a high Vmax(max speed the plane can take).
And yes being heavy supports the way down when acclerating(when falling it doesn't matter).
@@ariannescharfi9366 the P-47’s main claim to excellent dive was that Seversky wing. So sleek and well built, just cuts through the air.
Wasn't it diving P-47's where aeronautical engineers first encountered trans-sonic effects which caused pilots to lose control?
This game is getting so great..
Loved that Heinkel wheel coming loose after flak damage lol.
Great attention to detail with the damage model of IL-2
@@GrowlingSidewinder I hope every DCS plane will achieve this level of damage model, someday.
Dad flew with Francis Gabreski, probably the most famous P-47 pilot of WWII. Gabreski was the wing commander and my dad an F-101 pilot in 2nd FIS at Suffolk County AFB, Long Island in the early 60’s…said Gabreski had great eye sight even as an old colonel and commanded respect from the young fighter crews. “Beware the old man in a profession where men die young”
Didn't gabby fly his named old crow? Sounds right, can't remember.
That's awesome. Read a lot about Gabreski back when I was a kid. Hell of a guy. Your dad, as well, I'm sure.
holy crap dude, that quote gave me chills
@@kevinc8387 Old Crow was Bud Anderson.
That alsome
As an IFR-rated pilot I just wish I could log the hours spent watching every day's GS release.
Gold! 🤣
I don’t wish I could log hours, but I DO wish I could fly all those beautiful airplanes in real life!!! I’ll just have to settle for current generation aircraft until the commemorative air force accepts my application to fly for them!! 🤣
Adam wow did you actually apply to CAF?
You don’t? This is were I get all of my right seater time.
Same here bro in CFI academy. Lol 😂
Robert S. Johnson also related that in a turn fight the P 47 behind the enemy that he wouldn't try to turn with them. He would snap roll. The P 47 had a super roll rate and he would just roll when they turned and be right there.
Who’d think the massive P-47 would prefer the 1 circle fight
@@air-headedaviator1805 Don't know if it was preferred, but it happened.
The FW 190 also had a very high roll rate
Where the BF109 had a crappy roll rate
you’ve been killing it lately. watching you play dcs is part of my daily routine. the content IL2 is just as good. love the mix.
Another awsome watch. God how much I love the P-47. Huge airframe, massive Pratt and Whitney R2800 double wasp and eight fifty calibre machine guns. Its looks mean. Like it just wants to kill you. BTW, do you have a video where you explain what controls you use? Like Joystick, throttle etc. 👍
Best WW2 fighter in a dive. The later bubble canopy versions had great visibility. There were American pilots who actually preferred it over the P51 because the P47 could take a vicious amount of punishment, protect the pilot and get him home safely. It was essentially a flying tank. It's why it became very useful in a ground attack role.
It still bothers me that a P-47 loses an entire wing with just a few shots.
That's what 20mm rounds do when they hit the right spots. : )
Good move with opening the cowling to stop overshoot. P47 is really hard to fly on the servers, but with good tactics and discipline you can be successful.
P47
Fast on the level.
Nigh on untouchable in a dive
EVERYTHING can out climb you.
Plan accordingly when doing boom and zoom. The german birds have an outstanding climb rate, make sure you have enough energy to negate it when you extend away after a attack.
Hmm I suddenly want to see a mig 29 fight a p47
Fw-190 video please.
Great video as always. Really enjoy watching the IL2 and Flying Circus content. Your tail wheel landings have vastly improved. Big pat on the shoulders for that. 🙌
Love the P-47. Sure, the Mustang and the Spitfire may have been slightly more sexy looking, but the Thunderbolt was a beast. However clumsy the P-47 may have been when flying low and slow, it was fast and nimble at high altitude (particularly 25,000 feet and above) where that turbocharged Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp R-2800 really kicked in (which many Luftwaffe pilots discovered to their horror). Of course any German attempting to dive away from a Thunderbolt was toast, pure and simple.
Even in a ME262? Thought they could even climb as fast as a P47 could dive?
@@walterblanc9708 Adolf Galland's Me-262 got shot/forced down in his last combat mission by a diving P-47s, so even they had to be careful.
Awesome aircraft! One of the best ground attack fighters of the war because of its firepower and ability to absorb ground fire. My Dad was with a rifle company in France 1944 / 1945. He told me that P-47s would come in low strafing ahead of them, sometimes so close .50 casings were falling on their heads. Later models had a bubble canopy which allowed much better visibility. It seems like you can competently fly aircraft from any era.
Enjoy hearing real world accounts like this!
Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles has a great 6 part series here on you tube about the P47 from a completely technical standpoint. The one thing that comes across clearly is that it had an advantage at altitude because of the turbocharger, (speed and climb rate at altitude) also roll rate was very good.
I've seen this series in Greg's channel. Its a mandatory for every virtual P-47 pilot.
5:11 - I was expecting to see a small gif from Lethal Weapon :) And not familiar with IL-2, but the '47 *should* be able to turn well at high altitude. The -22 was also the first to receive the infamous paddle prop. Climb will be much worse on earlier models.
Kudos to all the men who used to fly the real JUG. It must have been quite a bloody task to fly a single engine fighter from England to German, and then have to concentrate on downing enemy aircraft that were close to home base. Their stress levels must have been intense. I have the greatest admiration and respect for those guys.
Try being a Naval Aviator? Their runway is moving....
@@WALTERBROADDUS I’ve been lucky to have been able to stand at the LSO platform while recovering aircraft on the Roosevelt. I ducked EVERY time an aircraft landed. I was aboard the TR as a test engineer years back when we conducted the first automated landing aboard ship as part of the JPALS project.
I know its wierd but you do blue vs blue and red vs red all the time on the modern stuff so...could we PLEASE please please get a FW190 vs ME109 fight?!
Really needs 8X .303 brownings to be properly effective against german bombers
I must be the only one who would like to see GS run a MC-202....is it that bad of a plane? I rather liked it in 1946.
Hi, Growling. First off - thanks for all the videos and all the content you put out over the years. I usually just click the thumbs up button but I thought it would be nice for you to actually get a comment from a person. A friend of mine talked about dogfight videos one day and in return I told him about some too. Turned out that we both sub to your channel! Thanks for the 4k resolution upgrade you made. I probably don't have to tell you how absolutely fantastic it looks in 4k on a 120 inch screen? Secondly - the vr thing is truly great. It is not translatable to people who haven't tried it. It really isn't just like having a screen that is "more big". It's sad that the games that are developed for vr are mostly just some piss poor bow shooting things but for car sims there really is no going back for me. I see the same for the ww1 plane sim you play here. I'm using the rift s too. For a combat flight sim other than ww1 planes I would like more resolution but for car sims I have to say that I made my choice. There is no going back for me.
Hi man thank you very much for the nice comment I really appreciate you taking the time to watch the videos and even tell ur friends about the channel, funny that he knew the channel too, small world I guess lol. I 100% agree with you I think the potential of VR hasn’t yet been realized and I think it lies mostly in simulators cars planes that kind of thing, the next 5-10 years should bring amazing new advancements to VR technology I think man, we shall see I suppose.
@@GrowlingSidewinder
I remember a couple years ago you posted a DCS video about VR. Your conclusion at that time was that it showed promise but was just too muddy and lagged out for massive flight sims. The video showed this too, as it was not nearly as clear as the ones you made with track IR.
Fast forward 2 years and you are loving VR, as well as producing solid videos while using it. Shows how quickly some technologies advance.
Makes me wonder if we don't end up creating a neural interface that allows us to see in VR _inside our heads,_ so the immersion is total. Imagine a flight sim where you don't wear a helmet to see, any more than you'd wear one to see IRL. 😱 Who knows, it might even be possible to simulate the feel of flying, G loads included. 💥🤟
There I go again, squeezing that invisible trigger.....
Oh my god finally!!!!!! Favorite plane ever!!!
Not sure about IL2, but in some other combat flight sims (Aces High & War Birds) the first stage flaps can be lowered up to 400 MPH which really helps in turns. Also, having the 8 x 50’s on the wings means that to be really effective one has to align their aircraft’s wings with that of the bandit’s wings.
50cals are kinda meh if u dont hit the engine/pilot. As much as i enjoy my current pilot career in the p51 its sometimes a rly pain in the @ss to shoot somebody down😂
Convergence setting is always an issue.
P-47 is all about that high speed combat. More than just being the fastest at altitude it becomes more agile the faster it gets, increasing in roll rate greater than that of many fighters much lighter than it. A true “Pursuit” type fighter, tho not one that handles head on combat with other fighters well
Although I prefer the RAF aircraft as well as P51/P40, The jug has always intrigued me slightly. Just a sortie or two in the jug over the pacific, then return to my beloved Spitfire.
Did not late P47’s come with bubble canopies?
How about some ground attack footage?
Love the pre missile era dogfighting videos.
I had a summer job years ago, co pilot on a B 25 air tanker. Im not a pilot but forestry and trasnport Canada required a warm body to pump down the landing gear in an emergency. Fun job, I was 19, drank so much beer with those old buzzard pilots. Beautiful airplanes, steer like an old truck with no power steering.
Aim-54 hoodie looks good ngl
Enjoyed that, thank you! Great start to the day for me :)
Thanks for tuning in man
I’d like to see a video on what you use and how the whole “dcs” thing works.
Shut the cowling flaps and set all the outlets and intakes to Neutral (On the left wall)
Nice Video!! is the P-47 N model in IL-2? I think you will find it a much different animal. Keep up the great work!! Edit: Also, Have you ever played Aces High, by Hi Tech Creations? I don't mean to plug, but if you like PVP in realistic WW2 flight simulators I highly recommend it!
No, IL2 has older variants of P47s than DCS. It has the P47D22 Razorback and P47D28.
I flew the 47, 51, P- 40. 38 and P-39 back in IL-2 1946 i had a lot of fun and flew with good groups 56th VFG 78th VFG 4thFG AFJ and 334th and 353rd VFG . sure miss the comradery . the 47 was my favorite, oleg would never give us a true 47 M .
Awesome. 47, 40, 38s. Always love the WWII content, GS. Have you done much with Hurricanes and Spits?
Where'd the B-25s go?
The P47 has, like the P51, the capability of being able to drop 1notch of flaps at any speed below 400 MPH. This greatly helps in a turn fight.
My personal opinion, if a certain Beagle were to be flying during WWII, he would trade in his doghouse for a P-47.
Watched and 👍 Liked
One of the best planes in the war. Radial engines baby!
P47 were used by other air forces during WW2. México was one of them, as ground attack planes in Phillipines. Very cool vídeo!
Thanks for the video. I played H.I.S. for a several years. I loved the P-47. You're so right... those 8x.50 cal were awesome. I was such a great ground attack aircraft, too. :)
I want to get back into VR. The thing that's stopping me is buying a new gpu at these prices. Still rocking the 1080ti.
In the same boat. Trucking along with a 1070 for now
IL-2 should be playable on a 1080Ti in VR if you're not using anything higher than an Index at 90Hz. I was playing it on a 1080 with a Vive Pro until a months ago - there is some judder on the enemy planes when they fly past you, but generally it's fine.
Have watched nearly every vid since 5months or so ago! Loved every one!
you the man brother thank you.
Saweet Video. The P47 Razorback has poor rear visibility. The bubble top is much better.
The Jug! Would love to see you do a mission in the D version. Much better visibility that would almost be unnerving with VR.
please do the FW-190 ive been waiting for you do it since you started playing IL-2.
F6F vs 109
If other flight sims are accurate, the p-47s flaps can be dropped to 1/4 up to 400 MPH which really helps in a turn fight.
How can you become an ACE in your first mission? Great flying.
Shoot down five enemy aircraft.
Target rich environment.
My question was rhetorical. It goes to show how ridiculous these games are. I enjoy them but they are not very realistic. Thanks guys.
4:40 Honestly, I can't say I've heard any reports of P-47s combusting in flight.
Amazing graphics when that German plane got hit by flack, caught on fire, and fell out of the sky.
Try the P47D bubble canopy. Also the P47 handles well at high altitude
Between 8 .50 cal machine guns to using a single 20mm or 30mm automatic, that's wild.
The newer P47s had a bubble canopy, so better visibility. I think it was some of the D models, the M and the N models.
Mate you are a pretty good shot
Im not a fan of the US armament. It's effective, especially when you put 8 on the platform, but it still takes too many shot opportunities to down a fighter when compared to cannons
for some reason your presentation moved me.
*vet-alumni
thankyou.
The first guy out of the first He-111 (the one hit by flak) reminded me of Jester. He wasted no time unassing that bird!
It's not the P-47 diving, it's the earth being very attracted to it's mass. ;-) The zoom dive is a great tactic for Jugs.
I love the attention to detail in these mods. But.... Why are planes sporting an incomplete D-Day stripe configuration?
And you're absolutely right. Until the D versions of both the Mustang and Thunderbolt became available, rear visibility was very poor.
He's flying a P-47D22 in this video
@@edwardsmith6609 dude, I KNOW what he's flying. Republic never changed the letter designation when the bubble top canopies were introduced, keeping the D designation. I know what I'm talking about.
If your taking punishment the Jug is your best bet for making it back to base...not to mention the amount you can dish out with 8 fifties...now that's gonna leave a mark.
Thunderbolt 1 versus Thunderbolt 2 would be awesome❤
8 Fifty calibers a stout frame and a paddle prop the only thing missing is the teardrop canopy what's to figure?
As long as your not bingo on fuel party on.
If we exchanged the radial engine of thunderbolt for the engine of the c130 would it help in agility?
Where does "Pacific Fighters" fit into the IL-2 family? Is it any good?
P-47. My favourite Billy Badass fighter.
THey need to let you fly the B-25 in Commerce Destroyer configuration
If you could fly like banning people for not following Canadian totallity...
Get the P-047D it has better visibility with the bubble canopy.
Have you thought about the F-4U Corsair? The F14 of WW II.
CONGRATS dude! You got the USAF to sponsor you!
any of the flight sims have the TA-152 that you can pilot??
So many vids of German aircraft annihilating allied aircraft in these vids , it’s a great refreshing change to see how well allied aircraft can do , and did .
I find it very difficult to fly well, seems so unresponsive, but I am sure its me.
Wish they had blood splatter on the inner canopy when you send a few shells through the pilot.
Great content, always great to watch and try to apply your tactics to my flying.
They have the bubble canopy version as well, correct?
Love it! This plane is so awsome, what a tank!! It was so HUGE for a fighter. I wonder what the left gunsight is for? Or is it a bombsight?
Backup irons incase the sight gets damaged.
It is probably an aux sight if the battery burns out in the main gunsight. When flying the A-4 we used to carry a grease pencil for that purpose. If the main gunsight failed we'd put a spot on the windscreen with the grease pencil. It was better than nothing.
Im sure you also like you steak juice.. ✌️🇩🇰
When u say climb , what altitude, airspeed
please help me how do you turn that smoothly i turn a little bit and im on a spinning roller coaster ride
Close cowl flaps over 250mph
How do you feel about the difference in fight models of the P-47 from DCS to Il-2
Why does your screen look so good. Is it the VR that makes it ?
My like and Comment. More like this please
European air war vibes, anyone else played it ?
Don’t know if it’s possible, but I would really like to see the F-16 vs the Mitsubishi F-2.
Not possible
I think the P-47D was the first model with good visibility due to the all glass bubble canopy it had. The one your flying here is an early model P-47.
Some of the D models were still razor backs. Not sure when the bubble canopy version came out but it was definitely a mix. Even with the P-47G there were still razor back versions. From that onwards the production P-47s universally had bubble canopies.
There were model numbers. GS mentioned this is a 47D-22, iirc, they didn't give the Jug a bubble until the 47D-25
I saving up enough so I can get a PC just for this game
Do you use the sight at all when shooting?
I've been searching the DLC on Steam.. I don't see the P-47.. what gives?
It’s part of the battle of bottenplatte expansion pack
Can you flying a stuka in the next video?
