In a lot of the shots where the camera zooms out from the world and into space, it zooms out from the California area, so I'd say there's a good chance it's meant to be set there.

Y'know, I've never actually found Gumball's "handsome" face to be disturbing or uncanny. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it stays relatively within his art style (at least, compared to certain other cartoons I've watched that had moments like this), or maybe it's because the show's already known for its wide variety with its art styles, so any _actual_ deviation from Gumball's normal style is more acceptable in that context?
