- On 3 January 2014 the spring tide combined with a south-westerly gale. The tide rarely comes over the grass at this semi-estuarine location, however on this occasion the marshes that are normally grazed by sheep became, just for a few hours, the sea.
I moved to France nearly a decade ago to be with my other half. This is type of video that makes me home sick.Grey windy days, Brits being excited by a bit of a flood so the whole family comes to see it, a bag of chips on the way home...cup of tea when you get in..lovely.
It doesn't matter how smart we get or how technologically advanced we become, when Mother Nature decides to flex her muscles, we have to just sit back and learn our place again.

Yes, I’m always amused when people give their boats haughty names like ‘wave dancer’ or something like that. Nature is powerful and has infinite patience. If we’re not careful, it wipes us out, effortlessly and uncaring. But, with all that raw power, it is always fascinating to be at sea.
I can remember running along that footpath nearly forty years ago. It was a cold September day, with a strong wind and driving rain. The tide wasn`t as high as this but still full enough to send a few whitecaps over the sea wall. As i set out from a friends house i ran against the wind. it was so strong i felt as if was running in concrete and that a huge hand rested on my chest pushing me back. Back then i was a serious athlete and used to hard training but the first three miles to my turn point was harder than some marathons i`ve finished. it normally took me about 18 minutes to reach a headland and turn for home back the way i had come. But that day when i got to the headland and glanced at my watch i saw it had taken me nearly thirty minutes and i felt shattered, all the energy sucked out of me. i turned for home and instantly everything changed. as I recovered and ran faster it felt like the hand was now pushing me along faster and i was really flying. I felt young, strong and alive and have never forgotten it. thanks for this.

Wonderful video of a beautiful environment and a phenomenon of nature. It fills me with wonder to realize that this has been happening for thousands of years, and will keep happening long after we are gone. It's nice to see people enjoying this event with their children as well.
After watching this video yesterday we visited Grange today! Not disappointed.

I enjoyed that, thanks for sharing. It's like the North West's own version of Dawlish! It always feels sad though when the tide retreats to the sea but then the great expanse of Morecambe Bay is well and truly revealed. Cheers!

Interesting video - well filmed. I've watched some high tides at Arnside on the opposite side of the river. I've not seen one as high as that, but I saw one which was 10.4 metres in 2019. The front of the incoming tide passed Grange as a tidal bore and swept over towards Arnside.

I enjoyed your film - nice editing, good music. I used to holiday as a child in Grange. Sad to see all that spartina grass now - lovely to see the sea back once again. When is the next high tide - I would love a trip up to watch. Duncan
To find the tide times for Grange-over-Sands check the tide tables for the nearest measured location (which is Roa Island) here: www.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast_and_sea/tide_tables/5/439a#tide-details remembering that it's only the highest tides that actually get over the grass, and even in a strong gale, it never gets any rougher than what you see in my film here. The extent of spartina by Grange prom seems to be more stable now, after expanding a lot through the 1990's and 2000's. Occasionally there is a 'Prom Art' art and craft fair on the prom, summer Sundays only on certain days - perhaps the Tourist information centre in Grange would know when. Of course the attraction for many is to Cedric Robinson's Cross Bay walks (usually from Arnside to Kents Bank - both of which have train stations). Again look on line to find when these are taking place. Typically they re every other weekend during the summer. Enjoy your trip if you go to Grange, it has kept a gentle, old fashioned kind of character that has been lost from many other seaside destinations.

I remember this before the spartina grass took over in 1998. It was all sand and rocks, even at Kents Bank 😊😊😊

hi i lived in grange in the 60s and 70s there was no sea grass bk then the river kent changes its channel every now and then bk in the late 60s part of the prom far side of the pool was torn down in a hugh storm

Thank you for your kind comment. The grassland is specialised: it is inter-tidal salt marsh, and species are able to tolerate occasional inundation by the sea. It is quite common in estuary situations in the UK.

The sun is so low in the sky its not true, thats like 8.30am on our shortest winter day. Amazed that at 55 degrees north, no snow in sight or on hills - very mild climate.
Thanks for your comment Adorecream 1976. I see from your channel that you are based in New Zealand. You are quite right that at our northern latitude in the UK we ought to have much colder winter weather than we do. However, our mitigating factor is our coastal climate, assisted by comparatively mild sea temperatures from the North Atlantic Drift or Gulf Stream (coming from the Gulf of Mexico). While this does not feel warm when I dip my big toe into the sea, it does have the effect of maintaining temperatures above freezing through the winter, in coastal locations. Of course day to day weather overrides this general climate pattern, and if the winter wind blows from Eastern Europe or Scandinavia, then it is cold. Last year at this time it was horribly cold with sub-zero temperatures and much snow. If the wind comes from the south, as it has been doing recently, then it is much milder. This week we had temperatures peaking at 21C. But for most of the time the winter weather is as you see it in this video: a bit of sun but generally unsettled.

Ah well this place doesn’t have that, instead we have cafes and gardens and a band playing in a bandstand in the park. It is quite a leafy and traditional sort of place that tends to appeal to older people. But further down the coast we have Morcambe and Blackpool for cantfloss and slot machines - larger, more urban places of quite a different character that perhaps draw a different demongraphic. Nice to hear from NZ.

This was cool. I used to love Grange as a kid. But when I went a few years ago I was a bit disappointed by the unsightly grass. That is nature I suppose, but the grass is disappointing none the less for me.
The spartina grass built up during the 1990s and early 2000s and is quite thick now towards Kent’s Bank. However the channel of the river has eroded much of it away near Grange-over-sands station although there is still about 50 yards from the prom. So it seems to be evolving in cycles. In the same period a lot of grads eroded away across at Silverdale.
apart from during hightide ive never seen grange without the grass, i agree the sad was and is better ive seen pictureso f it all around town but a while back i looked into it and some people i met say that before the sand and grass follow a cycle (allbeit a long one) but hte sand will return eventually unless the barrage between morcambe and barrow interveins. Grange is quite a nice place certainly at night when the town is empty

In a few decades the tops of those sea walls will be at sea level. I've been in coastal towns in the U.S. where the high tide is now covering the sidewalks of towns.

How often does the tide come that high? I was just there and it was all grass and the tide never came up to the promenade.
Almost never, this was an exception. Once a month at full moon the tide comes across the grass, but not over the prom. I am not aware that the tide has come up that high since the date of this film, but locals might be able to answer otherwise.

I'd say absolutely nil.
And let's hope all the good folk putting time and effort into it's resurgence see sense and realise it's just a romantic 'pipe dream'.
they have been here before in Grange, haven’t they, twice? but out of the options of demolish the old lido, keep it derelict, or do something with it, the latter sounds inherently more appealing to me. needs creative positive thought otherwise your prophecy will indeed come true.

Thankfully no, as the railway embankment is much higher and also acts as a flood barrier.

As author of this video I can assure you this is the full length and I didn’t do another version 30minutes long, and the track was not left hanging here at Grange-over-Sands after this storm.

I think I would enjoy the video but can't take the music.
You can always turn the sound off. There isn't any spoken narration to miss, and the 'real' sound is basically a load of wind noise. I'm not that keen on it myself (and I created it!). I was using copyright free music that came with my editing software. (I can't just pick something I like and add it). However as it has over 133k views now I'm not going to delete it now, what is done is done.
I do like hearing the wind and water. The music itself is OK, I just like nature videos without any music. I did watch the video and it is very good.
