The Atari in question is mine. I would just like to say that Simon is a dream to deal with. So, so easy. He's friendly, patient, communicative, and knowledgeable. If you're thinking of getting Simon to repair your stuff, I highly recommend him.
@@RetroComputingReboot So far so good. I loaded a game from disk ......and it works! Can't seem to get the joystick to work though, but this might be the usual problem of dry joints on keyboard pcb. Have tried out my new test cartridge and getting some errors on DMA and joystick ports but I think you need to connect a dongle (like a C64) to fully test it. Also will try out my Sd4st hard drive, be interesting to see if it works on this STE? Really need to take it apart and service/clean it.
Can I ask some Noob STE questions. I thought when a STE was first switched on it runs a memory test before loading TOS? Is this depending upon what version Rom you have, mine is 1.06? Can you connect the mouse and Joystick to the side ports rather than the awful ports underneath the keyboard? Thanks.
@JohnSmith-bh4zx TOS 1.06 is worth upgrading. TOS 1.62 fixes some bugs present in 1.06 which stops the machine booting in medium res. There is also a TOS 2.06 which added a memory test like you mentioned. However, I did find some games compatibility issues with the newer TOS versions. Reflow those joystick ports any get yourself some port extenders! That will save the pain of messing underneath the machine. What were Atari thinking?? 😂 The joystick ports on the side are 'enhanced'. You can't use a normal joystick with them, you would need something like a Jaguar controller. Even then, very few ST games supported them
Great news. Yes, those ports are a pain, but an easy fix. I really need to get myself a test cartridge and give it a whirl. I know with the original Atari test cartridge, there was an external board and loopback connectors for the hard drive port etc, so maybe that's the cause of the errors? I must confess I've never tried an SD card hard disk emulator. From what I've seen though they do look pretty good. I was lucky to find a couple of working Megafiles so I've stuck with those for now
You can buy a diag cartridge off PCB way. Or you can get a Sidecart- then you get a hard disk, floppy loader and rom loader including ST / STe diag cart. Super useful device
I've got an Atari ST in a packing box.. must dig it out and see what state it's in! It'd be interesting to have a video on storage options for the ST .. I'd not heard of the one you've got!
@@zx85 Well worth digging out! I've done a couple of videos on the Atari Megafiles, Atari's add on hard disk for the ST computers. Here's a link to one of them ruclips.net/video/5feybh8eD2A/видео.html They are hard to come by these days in working condition. I was very lucky to get two 😁
Hi Mike, glad you liked it. Yes I've quite a few actually. I just didn't bother as not many people seemed to like them 😂. I'll do another just for you 😁
Well done! Another Atari ST with a new life. Love the feeling of getting an old computer fully functional (especially an Atari)
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it 😊

Well done diagnosing and repairing the ST. Spookily, I just purchased a "working" STE, received it today and am just about to test it.
Thanks John. Fingers crossed with the STE. I've a couple of them, a 520 and a 1040.

@darrellvernon they are pretty robust in general 🤞

Thanks Stephen. Appreciate the comment. Ive been looking at both of those. Any benefits of one over the other?
Sidecart is IMHO a must. I have some basic videos on my channel
@stephenhookings1985 Cheers Stephen. I'll add that to my list of things to get
Nice! Well done! I've had to resolder literally half a motherboard before now, the soldering was that bad!
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I'm glad my soldering has improved too, to at least a reasonably competent standard 😂
Congratulations, I really like your videos
Thank you 😊. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know
