Heh... I'm almost 60, and all my life I've been hearing people say "today's music sucks"... regardless of when "today" was. I think it's just that people get attached to a certain musical style, and they don't like it when things change.
I guess that's what's going to be constant in the everchanging music industry, people are always gonna say that "the music of today sucks". Things get better and things get worse, and that applies to everything in history, you can't say it just all gets worse because what "sucks" depends on your taste.
It's a known fact that modern compositions lack the sophistication and the craftsmanship that defined music in the 60's and the 70's. Music has been getting progressively lazier and more conventional since the early 80's.
Almost always, it can be replaced with "I don't like this". Few people can truly explain WHY they think the music is bad, other than just disliking them.
@@AndrewBakke you do not know HOW many times I see people just ignorantly state that instead of listing why they do not like it. Some random guy's channel is an example. If you check out his 70s or 80s videos, you will understand what I mean.
I feel like Mac Miller’s “Swimming” and “Circles” are both great examples of this as well. The way he captures his audience’s attention and truly knows how to use his words properly really just saddens me every time that I think about his passing. We lost a legend.
the year is 2057. a young girl looks longingly at her Charli XCX poster. "I was born in the wrong generation." Edit: for the record let me say this isn't a dunk on Charli I love her music
@@Anonymous-xc2dj People used to walk about with placards saying "the end is nigh". Whatever happened to that particular brand of nutcase? Discovered the internet or died, probably.
Future nostalgia. That album was amazing- with the 70s/80s inspired sounds and melodies and then added to the modern pop genre. I just can't rate it enough. It been a while since I've found an album that has made me so happy
If you like future nostalgia, you should listen to “What’s your pleasure?” By Jessie Ware. It’s basically a more mature, better written, performed, sophisticated version of Future Nostalgia with similar vibes. Dua has tons of talent tho and she will only keep getting better. Future Nostalgia was a good album for sure!
As a 53 year old, I enjoy listening to Clairo, Phoebe Bridgers, Lorde, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Jorja Smith, Arlo Parks, Orion Sun, San Cisco, Rufus Du Sol, Rich Brian, Anderson Paak. Chvrches, Spacey Jane, Lime Cordiale, Wolf Alice, Tame Impala, The Wombats, Arctic Monkeys, Hatchie, I know leopard, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd,The Jungle Giants, Hockey Dad among others. I would say The Strokes and Daft Punk as well but both of these have been around for 20 years or more so they don't really count. There is a multitude of stuff to keep me happy. Mind you alot of these bands or artists have probably been influenced by alot of artists in the past and synthesised the music of the past to make it their own. eg. Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers is vey much early 70's based. Wolf Alice's latest release is very 70's and 90's sounding and yet it sounds fresh. Rufus Du Sol's latest release reminds me of New Order or Depesche mode or the rave music we listened to in the late 90's and yet completely fresh and new. It is all a testament to the musicianship and craftmanship of the artist.
Woah Billie Eilish is crap. She has a very narrow range of sounds. The other's are fine. What is missing is people are not listening to the same stuff that we had to when we were young. Most of the artist will be "who was that" in years to come because there is too much to listen to and finding them is not as easy Do to the amount of crap people can listen to. Also the algorithm are crap. For example my sir name being Mexican. I get Spanish language music other then my sir name there is no reason for the algorithm to feed me Spanish music. I like Shakira, but then I get feed Britney Spears because they are both blond. The Dude compared Pop music to rock songs, Pop songs where for the mass to consume and go on to the next. There was a level of gate keeping to get your song to the masses. Today anyone can record a song without knowing how to play an instrument, Because of that we have even more crap that we have to slog through so we have even more bad music. The Artist represented in this video all are classically train and which leads to better music. Like the music that was created back before the 90's.
I enjoy all kinds of music from classical Beethoven to romantic Chopin to electro dance of Lady Gaga to many different genres by Taylor Swift. It's so much easier to enjoy music when you can just remove all the prejudice out of your head
Very that ! I mean you can like listening to some genres of music more than others but fully not liking them even though you haven't even heard of them is insane ! Also sometimes, I don't want to go all critical on music, like if it's generic or been done too many time, sometimes I just want to listen and enjoy what I'm listening to. As a person with anxiety, thinking too much about something really takes the fun out of experiencing it and that is how I feel about music sometimes.
My music taste is all over the place. From classical, to metal, to orchestral and video game osts. Altough I listen to classical the most, I think every music is amazing. Every music speaks to you in some or the other way. (altough songs like WAP are kinda ehhh but still)
I agree 100%! If I like this music, its because I like this music. I used to have prejudice around Kpop because everyone else was saying it was crap, but I never realized how much I enjoy it now. I listen to all kinds of music too, from classic, to retro, disco, indie, pop, to anime/video games OST, musicals and even song that got famous in tiktok because why not?
@@InventorZahran Not only that. Now these crappy 90% are made on a "production line" that's more efficient than ever before in history and owing to a distribution system that's more efficient than ever before in history this crap owns 99.9999% of public attention. What does it even matter if the crap is 90% or only 65% if takes the lion's share anyway? The remaining %, the good music, is not going to come to the audience from mainstream sources. It's now only for those who actively seek it. It will be known to David Bennett, it will be known to you and me. But we're a tiny minority.
@@InventorZahran yea but throughout 1966(and I know because I remember)the top 30 had about 8 new records a week that are now considered classics. But what will be the ratio of that per week now in 10, 20 years time. I mean come on...how many 'hits' of 2001 will ever make the grade as classics? Not to say there isn't good music out there. But very little makes my old ears prick up(where as 65-67 practicly every other record did).Carry on young people if you dig it....but I wonder how much you really do.
@@randybackgammon890 It's not that the quality no longer exists. It's just not in the charts anymore. So I guess it can only reach a "cult classic" status, with the majority being unaware of its existence, as a lot of stuff from 2001 did.
A couple mainstream artists too that I feel are just fantastic are Billie Eilish & The Weeknd. Especially Billie’s “When we all fall asleep …” album REALLY impressed me… every song had brought some aspect that was far from anything I’d ever really heard before, and they all had a super cohesive vibe. Best album of current times imo, I can’t immediately think of anything that really tops it
You can’t think of anything in recent times that tops …When we all fall asleep? Seriously? Currents by Tame Impala? Rodeo by Travis Scott? Blonde by frank ocean? Igor by Tyler the creator? Kids See Ghosts by Kanye? Nonagon Infinity by King gizzard? There’s loads of other albums that push the envelope to a greater extent and explore new sounds.
What I love about Sour is that it has actual songs on it that would sound great irrespective of the production, and on top of that, Olivia isn't trying to be the 'next' anyone. She comes across as the unabashed, music obsessed 18 year old she probably is in real life. Also, it's surprisingly diverse. EDIT: Guys it's okay if you disagree with me, it's just an opinion. But I do think she has, at the very least, enormous potential.
Definitely not. Her lyrics are about as bland and basic as can be. There’s nothing interesting or creative about them. Her vocals and the fact that she got to work with great producers are the only things that make the songs decent.
@@ignitenhl3096 first of all, she wrote most of her songs in her 17s (she wrote happier when she's only 15) so of course the lyrics are basic. Second, she only works with 1 producer
@@ignitenhl3096 so what if its basic? music doesn't have to be super complicated with loads of theory to be good. sometimes a simple basic track is better than any complicated one
@@equaius893 agree to disagree I find it boring. I might like her songs if she did live acoustic covers or something, but how it is it just sounds to ‘plastic-y’ for me to relate to
I would definitely add folklore and evermore by Taylor swift to that list along with norman f*****g rockwell by lana del rey and fine line by harry styles. all incredible albums by incredible artists whom I think will go down as some of the greatest of our generation!
Not to incite a fan war and no h8 but Im defo slightly insulted that none of them were there while sour is there. Shows a bit of lack of research or sifting through of the gems in modern music. Also Grimes is def quite underrated
And not even just nostalgia, most of the songs that have stuck with you for years are probably songs that grew on you over time. Songs that hooked you your first time hearing them probably got stale more quickly.
Love the Sawayama album! The sound she presented throughout the album is so diverse. Also, Fiona Apple's Fetch the Bolt Cutters is also a great album. ❤️
of course i have to mention the entirety of lord huron’s discography. without giving too much away, lord huron’s music creates a narrative that’s so potent and incredibly inspired; hell, the discord has a channel specifically for piecing the storyline together as the albums come out. they are so underrated so i implore you all to give them a listen, especially if you like the night we met.
I’d really want to recommend Japanese Breakfast’s new release “Jubilee”. It’s a great electropop album that pays homage to the influence of Classic Rock on the modern Indie music scene. Another album that I’d consider a future classic is Lorde’s Melodrama.
The albums I'd like to recommend here are Shikata Akiko's _Singing Hill ~Ar=Ciel Ar=Dor~_ and _Istoria ~Kalliope~._ Both albums are just so damn good. _Istoria_ (from Istoria Kalliope) and _Infelious Rhaplanca_ (from Singing Hill), in particular, stand above the rest IMO.
I would add my favorite albums from last year: "SAWAYAMA" the debut album by Rina Sawayama (Apr 2020, and "RTJ4" by Run the Jewels (Jun 2020), who somehow have continued to put out absolute bangers for the past decade.
«The Turning Wheel» FOR SURE! The album is such an experience! The singing is so whimsical, and the production is just nothing short of magical. Everytime I put it on, I feel like I’m just transferred into a new and wonderful world where I can fly!
A girl in my music theory class got me to listen to Sour after playing a bunch of the songs on piano during the final week of school. I thought I would be disappointed because I was in a "theory" headspace when I listened to it, but I found that listening to anything in a theory headspace just led me to see the cleverness even in a stereotypical pop song. I'm so glad to see it on this list!
Speaking as an old guy: I've been waiting for someone to make this simple point for a long time. I'm bored with dinosaur listeners. Hey, fellow old people: if you don't like current music, maybe you could listen a bit more broadly.
i think the issue is actually more with younger people who want to identify with a "special" group and so shun modern music without the awareness of all the crap that living through that time period would give you
@@cherylfirbank7739 I have a roughly five year rule. I can listen to something like "Days of Future Past" or "Blood on the Tracks" or whatnot, but only once every five years. Overexposure. I think a lot of old people confuse nostalgia and music; that's their right, but it's not my jam.
I'm in the millennial age bracket and I listen VERY broadly. I still have a very hard time finding anything decent to listen to. I'll check out some of the artists mentioned in this video (especially Pheobe Bridgers, her stuff seemed up my alley) but up till now I'd never heard of any of them besides Fiona Apple. Maybe it's because I'm in the US and not the UK. Most of the new music I listen to isn't from new artists, it's from established artists who are still putting out great stuff - ie Bonobo, Bajofondo, Coldplay, Kem, Brian Culbertson, etc.
Titanic Rising by Weyes Blood. Such a reminiscent, melodic and melancholic sound with such an amazing theme. Has that old and modern sound and makes it work so well. I'd say it healed me as a person tbh
My personal favorite record of 2020 is RAZZMATAZZ by I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME. It blends the glam rock and new wave of the 70’s and 80’s with the alternative rock of the 90’s, yet it has a very fresh and modern sound. I highly recommend it.
I think what separates "crap music" and "good music" is how true an artist is to himself, if the artist is doing music coz he actually likes it or cares about it, it shows and that feeling is transmitted to the listener 🖤
yes exactly! a lot of the music nowadays is seen as crap because most people in the industry nowadays are only looking to make a profit out of it (which is why it all sounds the same), but there are still plenty of musicians doing it for the joy of making music.
I hate it when people complain about modern music without making any effort to find good modern music to their taste. What’s on the radio is only a tiny slice of what’s available. And, surprise, the pop charts aren’t tailored to the tastes of 30/40/50 year olds. They are for the youth, everything is new and amazing when you’re young, the youth are not as discerning as the older generation which is perfectly understandable.
the "good songs stick around and crap is forgotten"-thing is so obvious to me, because I am literally experiencing it with 2000s music right now, as the pool of songs from that area that are still being played on the radio or that become tik tok trends gets more and more concentrated. I don't understand how some people seem to completely forget that there was crap pop music in their past. I mean sure, rose coloures glasses and all, but still.
On BBC4 they replay each episode of TOTP going through the years, they're currently on episodes in 1991, and... yeah. You can definitely see how much crap there always has been. People forget bad songs and bad chart hits have been around forever, no matter the era!
you will see people say that the 80s and before was only good music, but they don't realize that there was not-so-good music back then that are forgotten and that the ones they listen to are mostly the better ones. It's a thing of generations
Exactly !! You'd think the longer someone lives, the more they're aware of the cycles that happen in life, and are wise about it, but nah. I love early 2000-2010's music, i grew up with it, but man, listening back on some of my old favorites, i sometimes wonder how my parents put up with me singing those songs every. Single. Time.
This was nice, I will check out some of these albums that I haven’t heard yet. My favorite of the past year is Taylor Swift ( with Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver) with folklore and evermore. I wasn’t a fan, never listened to her music, never desired to go out of my way to ever listen to an album of hers, but I have to say I found these two albums a pleasant surprise. I love them both, but I think evermore has a bit more pop to it, and I live it. Lyrically I have not found anything better than these two albums, even the ones i have heard on your list, lyrically and storytelling on another level. I never thought I’d ever say that about Taylor Swift…. But these two are great, Aaron’s instrumentals and production are so unbelievable.

Would like to recommend Italian rockband Måneskin! Especially their latest album Teatro d’Ira vol. 1, with both Italian language songs like La Paura del Buio and Coraline, as well as For Your Love, in English.
You need to listen to lana del rey's Norman f*cking Rockwell if you haven't heard it. It's one of the most timeless and brilliant records I've ever heard.
I must admit that nostalgia plays a big part in my music choice, but I'm also a huge admirer of Jacob Collier and Phoebe Bridgers. But i do listen to modern music with an open mind. Top video, David.
the 1975’s most recent albums “notes on a conditional form” & “a brief inquiry into online relationships” are quite amazing albums and truly changed the way i perceived music as a whole, the band is incredible and each of their songs are equally unique and i definitely recommend you all give them a listen!
Yes same and thanks. While I don't like NOACF as much as literally all their other albums, it's still great and can be appreciated. I especially agree with a Brief Inquiry. Because at its core it's just rock/pop, yk. But executed in a way that it makes that album probably timeless. I always come back to it and fall in love all over again
100% agree. ABIIOR was just a whole new era for them, followed up by NOACF, which truly changed the way I saw not only them as artists and their way of producing records, but the way music as a whole is presented. It made me fall in love with a variety of genres all over again, and I think it’s because the 1975 is so versatile as a whole. if you look back on their other albums, nothing sounds the same.
i was looking for a comment about the 1975. many of their songs have much deeper meanings that contrasts beautifully with their sound. i love that band and their music :D
Was literally scrolling through comments to find someone mention Billie Eilish - I absolutely love her music. Happier Than Ever has become one of my favourite songs of all time.
I have always ignored the “modern music is crap” sentiments because I tend to deep-dive into Spotify on a weekly basis and there are so many beautiful songs out there that so many people will never hear. It’s almost sad to know that the best song you’ve ever heard may pass you by without you even having the chance to listen to it! Even the “big” artists have songs that aren’t singles that some will never hear. Liability by Lorde is my favourite song of all time and it certainly wasn’t a popular one from her Melodrama album 👌🏼 People form stronger connections to “smaller” songs though because there’s a sense that more thought has been put into a song that isn’t designed to be chart topping. I think that fits for a lot of classics too that weren’t written to top charts, they just happened to resonate with a wider audience than expected. Bohemian Rhapsody is an obvious example
@@gustavoibarracarrizalez SO much about it is memorable to me, the songs are as vibrant as images to me, I'm not sure how to explain it to make it make sense but anyways, "the adults are talking" has some really great drumming throughout my favorite part being the drop before the chorus, and the dueling guitars are just amazing in the latter half of the track. Why are sundays so depressing has an amazing like soul sucking guitar that matches Julian's tired voice in the hook. and Selfless has such a good riff , the lyrics are strange and bizzare but have a general meaning , those are my favorite moments from the album but i want to hear what other people think
Whoa. *Thank you* , mate. I realised I've never actually left a comment on your channel and this video is a bit different than what you usually do - but, hey, I just wanted to point out how open-minded and inclusive your work is. Not having enough time to take actual lessons, your channel always helps me a lot when it comes to understanding music in its essence. Keep it up! :)
Yesyesyesyes! Aurora truly makes such different music and its big and her voice is so soft and you feel like each song is its own planet in a galaxy. So different but still belonging together. I'm so looking forward to her next album!!!!!
"Trench" by Twenty One Pilots is definitely one of the best example of a great modern album and a proof that modern music isn't all crap. A very creative album with a mix of different genres (rock, hip-hop, indie-pop, electronic, reggae...), created with amazing ideas, great musical performances (especially for the drums and the bass parts), one of the best and creative production I've heard for a modern album, and a real passion from the performers (Tyler Joseph vocals and writing are just perfect on this album). One of the best modern album and modern band according to me !
I agree, but Trench is not the only good album from them, their first three albums (Self-titled, Vessel and Regional At Best) are among the best albums that modern music has, from their lyrics to their sounds! Sorry if my English is not the best (is not my mother tongue) xd.
@@nalore2915 Of course ! I love all their discography and each of their albums are uniques and have their own identity (don't worry, this is not my mother tongue either haha)
In my opinion, SOPHIE's Oils Of Every Pearls Un-Insides is the greatest pop manifesto of this century. When I think of instant classics, a lot of albums come to mind, but one thing I've noticed is that most of them sound heavily inspired by the old days. And that's why the timeless SOPHIE stands out as a hero to me, because when I think of the soundtrack of my generation, when I think of something uniquely from my time... I think of her, I think of her legacy. Her album, and "Product" as well, changed the future of the industry forever.
I think K.G./L.W. is already looking like one of those albums which totally changes the course of music history. I heard O.N.E. on the radio today (WEQX) and it's wild hearing 24TET music on the radio. No doubt more bands will reach for it to stand out.
Yes! So much good music from the last few years. I’m going to recommend Weyes Blood’s ‘Titanic Rising’ from a couple years ago. It has a gorgeously early 70s feel with beautiful melodies and lyrics fit for our modern times. It’ll blow you away, David!
I don't usually listen to modern pop music, so I was really surprised when I checked out SOUR and actually enjoyed it... a lot! Thanks so much for the recommendations, you opened my eyes for a lot of good music I've slept on :)
Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia Still on the Billboard charts 57 weeks later. Every song on that record could stand alone as a single (and most are). The production is great, her vocals are great, her lyrical content is diverse enough that not every song is about the same thing. There are different vibes and keys for every song. There’s enough 80s and 2000s sounding nostalgia to keep the album from sounding like it was written in a specific point in time. And after listening to it dozens of times it still sounds fresh.
The comment section is full of artist recommendations, but I still want to add mine to the pile: Hayley Williams. Her two new albums, Petals for Armor and Flowers for Vases, are just so raw, experimentative und so purely emotional, and even though it might not be "conventional" music, it's still just SO good. Take a listen to Over those Hills or Dead Horse.
Hayley Williams is immensely underrated. I know there’s the discussion of “will it be difficult to separate her from her past in Paramore” but she brought a new, versatile, experiential genre to music and to her discography, that it made it very easy to see her as her own person and artist, while also wanting to delve deeper into her rawness in PFA and FFV, hence why they’ve been on repeat these past couple of months, in my opinion, just makes listening to that side of her music that much more enjoyable the more you listen.
Orla Gartland’s debut album Woman On The Internet will, I hope, earn it’s rightful place among the greats. Not only is it catchy, heartfelt, and nostalgic, but it launched an independent label, and what a launch it was.
I'm so happy to see that the ones on the list are albums/artists I already adore! I still have to check out Pomoko though. Their sound is so interesting.
Led Zeplin released "Stairway to Heaven", widely regarded as one of the best songs of all time, in 1971. It didn't chart on the Billboard Top 40. It actually couldn't, because it wasn't released as a single. So keep in mind that the greatest song of 2021 might not be a single, and probably isn't at the top of the charts. If you want to find it you're gonna have to actually look for it.

So you'd think that radio stations would've learned their lesson and didn't only play whatever new single has just come out, but they'd actually not play crap music in the first place.
That is not a lie, but man led zeppelin dominated the radios in the 70's, they weren't even near the underground at all, they were full on mainstream of that decade.
I'll admit, I've listened to a lot of modern music and none of it's sounded crap to me. Even if I don't like it, it's not crap. People who say it is have no idea what they're talking about. And yes, there'll be a minority of crap, and that'll get forgotten. And there's no point comparing music from different eras, it's apples vs oranges. Also, I recommend the last 3 King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard albums: KG, LW and Butterfly 3000. Then again, all their albums are brilliant and their first album, 12 Bar Bruise, was released back in 2012. Since then, they've explored almost every genre there is.
@@BradySpector Exactly. And whilst I do like some mainstream stuff, there's so much outside of it that people miss because they won't dig deeper into the genres.
Marina’s album Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land is hands down her best and most cohesive album yet and should definitely be celebrated as a classic in years to come.
Amazing List! I would probably add Arlo Parks - Collapsed in sunbeams, Clairo-sling, Taylor Swift- folklore/evermore, black Country New Road- for the first time and would rank Wolf Alice - Blue Weekend higher. But only time will tell:)
Declan McKenna is one of my favourite modern artists! I try to seek out new artists and be open minded about new music because I don’t want to limit my enjoyment of music. No use being pretentious or only allowing yourself to enjoy one thing.
Not just these, there are so many more pop, rock, indie, pop and alt pop albums out there that are absolute bangers. for example: cavetown, penelope scott, beach bunny, ricky montgomery, mother mother, the orion experience, love joy and surf curse. i have a lot more but i don't want to make this way too lengthy :D
Declan and Fiona are two of my favourite artists ever- both Why Do You Feel So Down and Valentine are so special to me, and zeros and fetch the bolt cutters did NOT disappoint.
I'm so impressed by the breadth of your taste and how you keep up with music of all types. It will be interesting to see if any of what you have referred to turns out to be a classic. Or, given that the music industry has changed beyond recognition since the advent of and domination by streaming as opposed to buying physical products, whether we are past the stage when bands can ever be as individually significant as they were before. I wonder how many of these acts will turn out to be influential. Only Time Will Tell.
I feel like he just listens to music 24/7 apart from when he's sleeping or recording videos or I guess playing piano, but he'd still be listening to himself playing then, wouldn't he
I used to be of this mindset, only listened to blues and classic rock. Then one day I decided it was time to branch out and really give modern pop music a go. This changed my entire perspective on music and now love artists like Carley Rae Jepsen and Dua Lipa. Don't be afraid to give something new a go and I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised. Modern artists are extremely talented and modern pop is so layered and the engineering of sounds is incredible.
I agree with you 100%. I used to say that I would never listen to to other artists than the Beatles, Queen, David Bowie, and Elton John but then high school came and here I am now listening to Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Adele, James Arthur, and many more artists.
I think one of the main obstacles to new music becoming "classic" is that we no longer have the same shared experiences. 70's FM radio accelerated stations focusing more on narrower genres and now it's sub-sub-genres and sources scattered all over the internet. Everyone saw Elvis and the Beatles live all at the same time and it had huge impact and energy. The public just doesn't have that same common ground now.
I like Jacob's album too. To each their own on their opinions but I think part of the reason why some will find it underwhelmimg is because of Jacob's incredible knowledge of music theory which puts up a high standard on the music that he releases. If it was released by a kid who is considered as an average skilled musician then the album would be legendary...it is legendary in my opinion, though it could use more cowbell..
great recommendations. I think Lorde and MGMT will be two artists who will go on to become classics later on, with their profound lyrics and exceptionally funky music respectively.
@@scxttpilgrim1054 I didn't, I love them. Really different music and so much distortion. I love metal but I'm not into rap much. This felt like a hybrid genre of metal and rap. Also lyrics are top notch
Arca - Arca MAGDALENE - FKA twigs Both of those are in a way so out of what is expected with music and absolutely in my mind show that modern music can be incredible, especially since a low of these sounds would not have been found 10/ 20 years ago
I think you are being way too fair on the industry... Whilst I'm in total agreement that there is plenty of amazing music out there today, the problem is that most of it isn't given a chance, especially in the digital age where a lot of money needs to be spent on marketing to be heard/seen. If by chance something good becomes mainstream such as Olivia Rodrigo - it's because it was the product of a major corporation - in this case Disney. There are plenty of talents like Olivia Rodrigo out there, but it's highly unlikely you'll ever hear them. The pop world especially prefers safe and bland to make money with artists they can easily control, not the wild rock stars of old. Unfortunately aside from her, the rest of your list is still not mainstream, even though most people who follow music will know the artists.
@Anne Day this is completely wrong. Experimental music in the seventies was mainstream and many artists had the chance to experiment and grow without getting blocked by a label
That's the point I think Rick Beato was trying to make, especially in his video about the "Y2K Curse" of rock bands popular in the 1990s not retaining their status in the decades that have since followed. It's a valid one. Labels aren't willing to develop artists anymore for the most part nor risk supporting artists with controversial views, so it's on artists themselves to get their music out if they're not already mainstream.
Exactly: the problem with today's music industry is that the crap music is, most likely, the one that takes all the money and it gets "pumped" everywhere. It becomes the best-selling, the chart-topping and the heard-everywhere, and it's less likely to fade away. Whereas the good music is, most of the times, hardly get noticed and, I'm afraid, very few people it's going to be remembering it in the future. On the other hand, the "classic" pop music from other eras had also a lot of success back in those days; and we don't need to go too far: lots of great stuff in the nineties or the noughties was as chart-topper and ubiquitous as it's the "crap" music today.
I disagree, I think there’s considerably more chance for musicians to make it on their own and get their music out there now than there ever was before. It’s a blessing of the digital age
i would have addeed harry styles's fine line. that album is a masterpiece, bringing back some vintage sounds while adding his own style. you should give it a listen if you haven't yet!
One of my favorite albums of all time... Harry is incredible. Also if you like Fine Line, would strongly recommend When Facing the Things We Turn Away From by Luke Hemmings, just was released a few weeks ago. It reminds me a bit of Tame Impala and John Mayer a bit stylistically on some of the tracks, but it really is just him.
Not sure, listened to that in a couple months back and only liked Golden and Watermelon Sugar. Imo it feels really inconsistent as the other songs I can see being forgotten in less than a Decade. However, it really showed how great of a musician Harry is and I'm excited how fleshed out his next album would be.
Porter Robinson’s Nurture is a fantastic album that released this past spring. An emotional journey through the hardships faced by an artist overcoming depression and self-doubt. Seeing it performed live in October. Love that man’s work.
Nurture is a complete master piece. You can't go wrong listening to nurture, World's is probably my favourite album of all time but I still find it very easy to enjoy Nurture.
I am so jealous of you that gets to see it live on October. I watched the second sky set live earlier today and almost cried realizing I will probably never see him in concert. The album is so well crafted
If I were to recommend one album from 2020 it would have to be making a door less open it’s pure genius, the production is so smart and attentive, I’d be hard pressed to find more well thought out music from 2020.
listened it for the first time in a party, suddenly somebody puts deadlines (thoughtful) and that song made the party, afterwards i listened all the album, amazing
The problem with your list is that many of these albums are unknown to the average person, of any general demographic. Much of what makes songs classics is that they were a combination of being musically good and popular at the time. Are there any examples of songs from 1950 to today that are considered classics today, but where fairly unknown to the general population when they came out?
The Velvet Underground’s first album The Velvet Underground & Nico is now regarded as a classic album but it was unknown to a lot of people back when it came out in 1967.
Love the support for Tame Impala, it's always great that new people are always being introduced to it. Heck, this video has introduced me to even more music, great video!
Parker is an exception to the rule, he's almost a music god by now, I hate currents with my soul but it ain't nowhere near a bad album. Kev is just timeless
I'm an older guy (52) here to tell you there is good and bad music being released now. That's just the way it's always been probably since music was first invented.
@@Mike-zf4xg there were people who hated Fleetwood mac. there were people who hated queen and elton john and anyone else that is seen as classic. just because you or anyone doesn't;t like a certain genre or set of artists, doesn't mean that there aren't incredible pieces of art from that time period. i don't listen to too much recent music, however, id say to pimp a butterfly is my contender for a classic from the 2010s
Right?! I'm 44 and I'm still finding cool new bands and pop music that I like now. And for heaven's sake, music doesn't have to be earth shatteringly important and groundbreaking to be enjoyable. Like, it's one thing to prefer listening to those old classic albums- if that's what brings you joy, cool. But I can't help rolling my eyes at the comments sections of 80s videos filled with people saying "yeah man, back when music was good. Everything sucks now."
@@Mike-zf4xg I’m 52, like the poster, and I wouldn’t be interested in who was the Fleetwood Mac of today: I’d be more interested in who’d be the Kraftwerk of today. And it’s probably Haim who are today’s Fleetwood Mac, if that’s what interests you.
would 100% recommend Moral Panic (2020) by Nothing But Thieves and their older albums called Broken Machine (2017) and Nothing But Thieves (2015). They're a british band that combines rock with a bit of techno and classical instruments from time to time (alternative). Just went to see them and out of all the gigs I've been to, I had the best experience ever :))
I didn't love most of the music you presented, however, I'd never call it crap. It's art and there will be a million different opinions on what is good. I'm a lot older than you and while I have broad musical tastes I tend to like folk, and country with a sprinkling of other styles so what I like is going to be different.
try fleet foxes and father john misty for some modern folky stuff that isn't too obscure- also, Djesse volume 2 is Jacob Collier's folkier album so you might like that
I'll recommend "Stray Sheep" from Kenshi Yonezu, released last year. He's been getting a lot of attention in Japan lately for writing music for television, anime, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The shift in genres but with a tasteful appeal in Yonezu's music could appeal to Western audiences the same way Olivia Rodrigo is doing this year.
Dude, you picked some perfect albums to highlight! Very happy to see so many of my favorite albums from this past year and a half, with Zeros being my favorite one. Holy shit it blew me away when the first ep was released. Did the same as you, suddenly I had listened to it five times. Bowie-vibes but a really damn fresh sound. It's the Declan McKenna-sound🙌🏻
Problem with modern mainstream music is the overproduction especially with the overuse of autotune, the same trap beats, the same Omnisphere bells and patches, and the overemulation of real instruments. Heck, even metal is plagued with autotune and drum-triggers these days. Music theory-wise and melodic-wise, we have fresh ideas. It's the way how these songs are created now, that we are slowly stripping away the "human element" of songs. Everything is too perfect.
Seconded. My Woman is also an incredible album by Angel Olsen, and if you like her I would recommend Perfume Genius, specifically his most recent 3 albums.
Very true. I think sophie and arca's music definitely also is shaping modern music, although nurture has all what's best about electronic music without the anxiety. Even with his use of dissonance, his hope is everything. I love Mirror, Mother and Get your wish. He is a legend and his lyrics run deep into my soul, his words communicate intimately a shared experience and give me the courage to go towards the things I want, to reach for the things i need, all the while giving me the patience and wisdom to deal with the present.
I would add Weyes Blood. All of her music, but mostly "Titanic Rising". It's amazing. Good lyrics, gorgeous voice, great instrumentals... It's so good.
Now that’s very kind, thanks David.
Just downloaded this whole album, looking forward to going through it!
Thanks for the music! Say hi to Gabi for me! 😊
it’s an incredible album Dec🎶
i literally came here because i saw you in the thumbnail omg 😭
hey! I know you because of Brazil and then I stayed listening the other songs :)

Actually tho… i get it, its subjective but cmon mainstream back then tops mainstream now
It's a known fact that modern compositions lack the sophistication and the craftsmanship that defined music in the 60's and the 70's. Music has been getting progressively lazier and more conventional since the early 80's.
The phrase "modern musics are crap" will always be valid in each generation forever and ever until the extinction of human race
I'm sure it was an old and common complaint in the Roman Empire
so for the next two generations then
Almost always, it can be replaced with "I don't like this". Few people can truly explain WHY they think the music is bad, other than just disliking them.
it's easier to imagine an end to capitalism than an end to "music isn't as good as it was back then"
@@AndrewBakke you do not know HOW many times I see people just ignorantly state that instead of listing why they do not like it. Some random guy's channel is an example. If you check out his 70s or 80s videos, you will understand what I mean.

Are you gay by any chance
Rich Brian? That's cool broo
if you want a bruce springsteen based artist sam fender is one of the best songwriters of the generation
The Strokes have been around for a while as you say but their album The New Abnormal was only released in 2020 and is brilliant.

Sturgeon's Law: "90 percent of everything is crap." The past seems better because we are seeing the best ten percent.
All the crap from previous decades has been forgotten, but the latest crap is visible because it's new.
And crap is 75% water. The rest is drum machines.
@@InventorZahran yea but throughout 1966(and I know because I remember)the top 30 had about 8 new records a week that are now considered classics.
Lyrically I have not found anything better than these two albums, even the ones i have heard on your list, lyrically and storytelling on another level. I never thought I’d ever say that about Taylor Swift…. But these two are great, Aaron’s instrumentals and production are so unbelievable.

@@jonasrmb01 she's not independent. She's under Republic/Universal records. She just left her original label at the end of her 15 yr contract. She's not independent.
@@jonasrmb01 Oh, I see what you meant. She owns her current masters, but she is signed with Republic/Universal. They are her label. So I guess I don't consider that independent if she is signed with a label. But, I see your point if she owns her masters. But....there still is a contract with a label.
@@jonasrmb01 we just have a different definition of independent. She owns her masters but her label, to which she is signed, distributes and markets the music. It is distributed by Universal. I know this because I own her physical copies of her music and it is stated on the copies that the music is distributed by Universal. Now, I think that means she is not independent even though she owns her current masters. But, this just may be a matter of terminology. I don't consider that Independent, but you may even though she is signed with a label who markets and distributes her work.

the 1975’s most recent albums “notes on a conditional form” & “a brief inquiry into online relationships” are quite amazing albums and truly changed the way i perceived music as a whole, the band is incredible and each of their songs are equally unique and i definitely recommend you all give them a listen!
@@tiredteabag truuu

I've grown very fond of Billy Eilish's music over the last year, and her second album, Happier than Ever, is awesome.

Joji's Nectar and Gorillaz's Sound Machine are great
NECTOR MY LORD THAT ALBUM IS PURE GOLD
Never thought I'd see someone who's listened to both
I have always ignored the “modern music is crap” sentiments because I tend to deep-dive into Spotify on a weekly basis and there are so many beautiful songs out there that so many people will never hear. It’s almost sad to know that the best song you’ve ever heard may pass you by without you even having the chance to listen to it! Even the “big” artists have songs that aren’t singles that some will never hear. Liability by Lorde is my favourite song of all time and it certainly wasn’t a popular one from her Melodrama album 👌🏼
People form stronger connections to “smaller” songs though because there’s a sense that more thought has been put into a song that isn’t designed to be chart topping. I think that fits for a lot of classics too that weren’t written to top charts, they just happened to resonate with a wider audience than expected. Bohemian Rhapsody is an obvious example
The strokes' most recent album The New Abnormal (2020) has some rly great songs on it too. I personally love all the songs on it
I would say that it's my favourite album of The Strokes, it's really fresh rock!!

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizards two most recent albums released in the last year in exploring microtones are great. Their old stuff is great too.

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia
Still on the Billboard charts 57 weeks later.
10000% agree
Hayley Williams is immensely underrated. I know there’s the discussion of “will it be difficult to separate her from her past in Paramore” but she brought a new, versatile, experiential genre to music and to her discography, that it made it very easy to see her as her own person and artist, while also wanting to delve deeper into her rawness in PFA and FFV, hence why they’ve been on repeat these past couple of months, in my opinion, just makes listening to that side of her music that much more enjoyable the more you listen.
Hayley willaims as in lead of Paramore? She's been a star for years now.
COMPLETELY agree. Dead Horse forever has my heart. Hailey’s debut left me raw and open and so struck.
YESSSS i recently found Flowers for Vases (didn’t see the release until recently) and i looooovvve it so much

Both of those are in a way so out of what is expected with music and absolutely in my mind show that modern music can be incredible, especially since a low of these sounds would not have been found 10/ 20 years ago
Right. Comparing a 70s decade playlist to a 2000s or 2010s decade playlist will show this.
I disagree, I think there’s considerably more chance for musicians to make it on their own and get their music out there now than there ever was before. It’s a blessing of the digital age
