I can appreciate your attempt at a kind response, but she did this to herself. She has a job. She totally thought she could win. If you watch her interviews prior to her Olympic appearance, you would have also seen her swollen ego. People that are truly devoted to breakdancing should have taken her place. It could have changed their whole life. Her behavior/dancing looked like it was an SNL skit. Breakdancing can be amazing. Some people make moves that don’t even seem possible and it’s beautiful. They should be in the Olympics! This isn’t a moment to embrace the poor 36 yr old with a phd (and pretty sweet life) that gave it her best. She deserves the criticism. She should be humbled and step aside.

@@justunverifiedYou haven't lived long enough to make such a claim. It's an ignorant claim. Obviously the qualifying "battles" were not representative of Australia's best. The AOC screwed this up badly from the very beginning.
You're just too young to see it, because you think this is normal.
And the way you downplayed Olmypians as not competitive is misleading. Do you have any idea what Olynpian training looks like? If a country doesn't have the means for Only pian level training of a sport they simply don't compete in that field. That's how the Olympics works.
In 2028 breakdancing will be removed from the Olympics. This was the year Olympians were supposed to prove breakdancing belongs there, not forgotten to history. Saying it's OK a 36 year old hobbiest without Olympian quality training should be allowed to compete in the Olympics is outright disinformation.

I know in Australia there's Holy Molly, and Sui, who's probably too young to compete at the Olympics.
But the fact that these two exist tells me that there are probably others who are better than Raygun, and the right age for the Olympics. They just had to find them.
Instead, the qualification was held in a small circle.
I heard there were only 15 people competing and Raygun only had to compete against 3 opponents. That seems pretty low to me.

It's a sad world we live in where we no longer expect or respect excellence from Olympic athletes. You are right in a sense. She had a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete in the Olympics and lacked the social awareness or normalcy to realize she was going to embarrass herself and her country. She got a free trip to Paris and all she had to do was dance poorly a few times.
What you didn't address is the fact that there are way better B-Girls in Australia, but they don't have connections like this professor does. She is wealthy enough and connected enough to attend official competitions and qualify. She never would've been selected by someone who knew what they were doing.
If this is the best you have, don't even compete, at least not at an international level where you are representing more than yourself. There is no virtue in sucking at something.

You clearly did not fact check. The position was decided at the Oceania Olympic selection event.
The Oceania Olympic selection event (The QMS 2023 WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships) in October 2023 brought together the top Breakers, both Bgirls and Bboys. A panel of 9 international adjudicators, a head judge and a chairperson who oversaw the competition, using the same judging system at the Paris Games and trained to uphold the highest standards of impartiality. These judges are all highly respected in their respective communities and in the international Breaking scene.
There were 15 that turned up. I watched the qualifications videos. Raygun was the best on the day. Ya sure there are probably better breakers in Australia, but THEY DID NOT SHOW UP. Raygun showed up and gave it a crack.

@@sydtopia1 I read the same articles you did. I do not think it makes this any better. They held a single competition that only had 15 attendees and was therefore poorly publicized. I have literally seen Yu-gi-oh tournaments in small towns with more turnout.
I have seen routines from that competition and don't think she was the best. Even if she was, it is because Australia has a severely underdeveloped break dancing community. They obviously have no regional qualifiers and no way to assess talent that doesn't come from money and connections.
Again, let's assume the competition was 100% legit and that Raygun is the best to ever do it from Australia. It was still absolutely embarrassing and her response since it happened has been equally disappointing. Regardless, we never have to see "breaking" in the olympics again. I just hope she doesn't get a bunch of endorsement deals or something and cash in on this, because that would be the ultimate insult.

You're missing a couple of critical points around this whole debacle... The main one being that Raygun is absolutely nowhere near the best Australia has to offer in terms of breakdancing. The Australian qualifying & selection process around all of this is what needs a much closer look.

Can you say this is a serious performance of her breakdancing ability based on her past performances? There is some truth to this, but jumping to conclusions that she purposely performed poorly, rather than the most logical conclusion that nerves had an impact, is wild. Even the most competitive breakers in the world have a tendency to perform poorly at the world finals - now imagine what would happen on an Olympic stage to a competitor from a less competitive country.
I think it’s also worth calling out that the public keeps going back and forth between narratives of “she was better during the qualification process, so she must have thrown on purpose” and “she never should have qualified because she wasn’t good enough”. Which was it, did she earn her spot because she was a strong competitor, or did she “rig” the system because she wasn’t good enough. The mental gymnastics the general public has been doing to make excuses for their behavior is disappointing

Very interesting question, this should be the main debate I think.
Even though many people would say “yes, because someone still have to represent that country/continent”, I would say no, there should be some criteria that have to be checked before inviting someone, even if she/he won some qualifications.
Let’s say they do a qualification for the 100m in Australia and the guy who wins the first place does the 100m in 20 seconds. There should be a rule in which if you are above 15” you still can’t compete at the olympics.
Otherwise, in a continent where a specific discipline doesn’t exist or it’s almost non existent, literally just a regular guy could partecipate at the olympics and be considered an athlete just because he won in his country/continent. The motto of the Olympics is “Citius, Altius, Fortius” which is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger", bgirl Raygun in this case doesn’t represent any of the qualities of the Olympics motto, and that’s why people are making fun of her.

She came in last place, so if you want to make a comparison, look to any other last place competitor. She represented an under-represented country, just like a marksman who missed all of his targets represented his under-represented country this year. The Olympic committee’s mission statement is to bring together a diverse representation of all countries in as many sports as possible, if every competitor was the best in the world, then every single competitor in breaking would have come from Japan, Korea, or the USA.

@@Vosmalus look, I hear you, I do. But this narrative that “Olympic-level” is synonymous with athletes that medaled, like Simon Biles and Novak Djokavic is very dangerous. Mid-way through the vid I talk about the factual goal of the Olympics - giving representation to under-represented countries. Again, I never said she was a strong competitor, she came in dead last - that is not a hateful take, basic criticism is not hateful - I hear where you are coming from and I agree. But i hope you also take a step back and agree that there is a line where criticism does go too far and becomes hateful rhetoric. That line can be tricky to identify, but the tell-tale sign of when that’s happened is when folks use misinformation to try and justify their “criticism” rather than using logic and the available facts. Put it this way, take any other last place finishers in any other events. I would also say their performances weren’t strong, I think you’d agree that isn’t a “hateful” take. But no one is making videos mocking the slowest runner at the Olympics, or the archer that missed every single target this year. No one is sending them death threats and creating factually incorrect conspiracies that “they must have rigged their country’s qualifier’s”. And no one is saying “they were bad, and that’s not what the Olympics are about” 👀Respectfully, based on viewership numbers, 99% of folks that are passionately jumping on the bandwagon of saying how bad she was didn’t even actually watch her battles, they just watched clips on TikTok or Instagram where folks purposefully cut together non-sensical parts of her rounds and added purposefully silly background music. Did you actually watch all of Raygun’s battles and the other competitor’s battles before forming your opinion? Because, there were other subjectively weaker competitors - notably Morocco and the Refugee team representative. USA, China, and Japan dominated, which is in line with the actual breaking circuit. So it was really cool that the Olympics allowed the refugee team, Morocco, Australia, and other under-represented countries to send athletes to compete as well. But even though all of them were outclassed, something about Raygun being white and from a country that usually does well in other sports, confused people enough that they cumulatively decided that she was an easier target to make fun of, instead of the other competitors that had similarly weak performances. Stuff to reflect on, hopefully

@@justunverified This is a rare moment i wish i could actually have this conversation in person because it's hard for me to have a deep meaningful conversation over the internet. I respect that you're polite and i actually agree with some things but not others, i would really like to know why you think the way you do on certain things because i strongly disagree with some of your comments. So we agree that misinformation is bad, that her performance was lackluster or in your words, "not a strong competitor" but we won't agree on what the olympics should represent or what a role model looks like or what bravery means. I know you don't think i don't understand but i tried, i just don't want to explain it by writing a book on why i do and don't agree about some of the things you said, just felt like you were trying to defend her and her performance by trying to speak to who she is as a person. The fact of the matter is her performance was bad and her participation shouldn't give her a pass on criticism. This will be my last reply, just hope you took your same advice and best wishes. 🖖

@@Vosmalus this will be my last message as well. To close on a positive note for everyone, I’ll answer the question of what I recognize bravery to be. I think it’s totally understandable and maybe even more rationale that people look up to star athletes, celebrities, and the most wealthy people in the world as their role models. Personally, I respect bravery, (the willingness to try) and while it certainly takes bravery to try when someone is already the best in the world, I would argue it takes more bravery to try when you know that you’re the underdog.
Put differently, to me, while others might see the most jacked dude at the gym as the only logical “hero”, my friend who turned their life around by going to the gym and ‘decided to try’, despite feeling judged for his size at the gym, demonstrated more bravery than anyone else there. Folks I’ve met that had no job prospects but still got up every day to work minimum wage and go to night school to get a chance at a corporate job, to me, demonstrated more (or at least a different kind of) bravery than the person that was handed a 6-figure job right out of college.
If Raygun had done any of the controversial things that media outlets have pushed, like rigging the qualifiers, then of course I’d be the first one to discredit her as well. But when the misinformation is cleared up, what’s objectively left, is a woman in her mid-30s who went through a fair and arduous qualification process and managed to beat more athletic girls by being consistent and better composed under pressure. All of that work, all of that “trying” was to go to the Olympics to represent her country knowing that she would almost certainly get smoked by more competitive countries in front of millions of potentially judgmental viewers.
It takes bravery for anyone to compete - but personally, I think it’s easier to try when you know you’re the favorite to win. For anything in life, I believe it’s harder to try and easier to give up when you know the cards are stacked against you. I think those people are rare, and unfortunately don’t get celebrated enough.

    • @justunverified
      @justunverified  6 дней назад

@@krisefor respectfully, check your facts before making confident claims:
      1. Olympics are not for the “best of the best”, the mission statement is to get representation from all countries. It’s very dangerous to compare the last place finisher with the gold medalists that you’re probably thinking of. Remember that there were Olympic archers that missed every target, runners with incredibly slow times, and gymnasts who missed the bar completely
      2. Breaking was never planned to be in the Olympics after this year. It was a one time event, so the public twisting that narrative to justify their behavior towards Raygun is very unfortunate
Criticism is understandable, but please use actual facts and logic before spreading things that aren’t true ✌️

Man, I get you, but what has happened is not OK on so many levels. Not for her, not for the Olympics, not for Breaking (what is apparently not called Breakdance anymore, because any kind of explicit dancing competition is usually rejected by the IOC, presumably for good reasons).
When you see the interviews pre-competition, she does not come around like the humble adult person who knows that she cannot compete and just want to do what she loves, like you described it. She comes around like a very young woman who exploit all these things for her identity formation, like (young) people just do it in the age of Facebook and Instagram, and that is one of the reasons that has caused this backlash.
Normally, I am not even bothered by the stuff on the internet, but I am a sportsman myself, and I was growing up in the Hip Hop culture as well. You can not translate this lovely Hip Hop attitude, that I do in general agree with, into the Olympic sports.
Hip Hop is a subculture born by the motivation to replace the mainstream goals with something else. Olympia is the peak of the competitive mainstream. When B-boys and B-girls want to be Olympic, they have to be Olympic (with all the spirits they have called for).
I am a boxer, but going in the ring against Tyson Fury is not the fulfillment of my dreams, it is nonsense that will end up horribly. My coach would not allow it anyway. He would not allow anything that he thinks, I am not ready for, that is what coaches are supposed to do.
Man, what has happened is not OK, and you should consider that she suffers the most. I do not agree with your statement, even though I love the message.

You are very kind and I like it, you have god points there but we must also face reality. When she went there she came with responsibility to represent her country. You send your best of best to represent your country and your people. Thats why it is totally fair to assume that all other dancers in her country are even worse because she should be best that Australia can offer. I think she could do much better but that show she came up with was like "motto of these Olympics is: weird means better I will come with weird dance show".

Trying to paint her as the new Eddie the eagle or Erik the eel, is not going to cut it. She is not someone passionate about her sport, just lacking the funding to train in the proper way, she has no skill and was selected because of her privilege, not due to lack of privilege, and that is why she is rightfully made fun of. Add to this she tarnished the whole "sport" and made a mockery of it as a competitive thing, with something that was literally as cringey as Ricky Gervais (David Brent's) office tv show dance. While, the likes of Eddie and Erik were inspirations who only boosted the status of their sports.

Footwork is already an acquired taste. Her moves and transitions have been around for 20 years and there was nothing original or creative about it. She's no Roxrite, Cloud, or Zeshin. All she did was what Austin Powers did to the James Bond movies in the 90's - ruin the image so no one could take it seriously.
Her performance is what you'd expect to see at the prelims of an amateur competition - bboys that have only trained for a few months and competing for the very first time. Hard to justify sending that kind of talent to the big stage, but as you said, that may very well be all Australia had to offer.
