I am 65 & 1/2 and this period of time you're talking about was unrepeatable. Amazing music from all of those bands you've mentioned . I've been keeping up with the Jethro Tull reissuea . They are just perfect. I wish other groups took the Tull format abd released their boxsets in a similar fashion. Thanks for your podcast 😂🎉
Phil, this was the one and only tour I was fortunate enough to see them and as it turns out, it was the least visually documented. What I remember the most about the performance was at the end, after the band had left the stage, a telephone began ringing which was at the front, center of the stage. It rang for a few minutes, the house lights had come up and people were starting to leave but the phone kept ringing... then Ian Anderson appeared from behind a curtain, walked to the phone, answered it and then held the phone out to the audience and said: "It's for you". and left.
Really ? Woah that's so amazing and awesome, only freekin Ian ,cus most bands of not all bands are rushed off the stage and on to the next place but Ian has this eccentriclly odd things he does ,and that was one of them, that's cool you stayed and saw that, thanks man
I was 15 when this was released I thought it to be a perfect follow up to TAAB. I was surprised and really pleased with extended length of the track and the dvd of the Hare who lost his spectacles. A fantastic re releases
Great set review!!! Thanks for the heads up on the rather quiet re-releases of the Minstrel and Songs from the Wood late last year. Do you think Passion Play and Warchild will see similiar re-relases this year?
❤😂 an excellent box set. After TAAB this is my second fave Tull album. I fell in love firsr time i heard it . Watching this podcasr hugging my copy . Greetings from Western Australia
Hi Phil ,you know what's up I'm from Tucson Az and every band you named is what I listen to,and your review is right on tee ,passion play is for a select few ,and myself and you are part of that few ! Thanks for your enlightened perspective being in. England u saw iit happen !
Glad to Discover another one loves this album. I am convinced the critics and most audience had no idea what to make of it, having no knowledge of passion plays from centuries ago, as well as being anti-religious (for good reasons). But that’s a major reason why I love Tull, the deep, historical connections.
The best Tull!!! With Minstrel !!! But i love them all 😄💕… Thanks Phil, You have your wonders, about your Chanel!!!??? Keep Spinning and keep us update!!! You are so passionate!!! And i love You för that!!😄💕… Love from Sweden!!!!👍😀♠️💀🤘🏼…..
I love Jethro Tull and had a weird history with them. I must say that for many years (about 40 years) I had only listened to Aqualung and Stand Up. During the pandemic I listened to Minstrel in the Gallery and it caught me. Then "Thick...." and I was fascinated, hypnotized. He continued with Benefit, "Songs...,"Heavy Horses", "Stormwatch. Even Broadsword seems fantastic to me. But "Passion Play" was always an album that was difficult for me to incorporate. IMO it's NOT up there with the top five, but I like it a lot.
My fave Tull album. It covers hard rock, acoustic material and is good to sing to and dance to. The Nightcap versions have added flute which were recorded in the 90s. The same tracks on the SDE have the flute removed.
Another one I picked up from Amazon on pre-order for £16 when it was released. I have to admit this album took me well over a decade to really appreciate it. When you look at the "hare who lost his spectacles" you can see that the same PYTHON-ESC! humour continues from their previous album Thick As A Brick. I love this album more today than I ever have though I still regard TAAB as my ultimate favourite Tull album. The reason for this is really how well that album was stitched together to make it sound like one continuous song. With Passion Play even though like TAAB it was done in two parts it sounds more like a collection of songs stitched together and that is where it falls short to my ears. But what I love about most Tull albums are the acoustic elements and the fact that A Passion Play still has those is why I like it. Really enjoying your channel and how you so well present things Phil and have subscribed.
Hi Lee, thank you for watching and welcome aboard! I really appreciate your kind and supportive comments. I do think Jethro Tull are more appreciated now than they have been for years. Phil
Hi Phil, I am really enjoying your Tull series. I bought this album, Summer '73 (still have the LP) and it is my all time fave. It is hard to believe now, that the FM rock stations would actually play 2 of the edits from side 2 (So. Calif.,USA) ...lots of great music then. Tull and Led Zep. were very popular on the concert scene, selling out arenas. I watched your "location" vid on "Physical G." and the background looks very similar to the one from the vid. of Tull's "Dunringill"-from the "Slipstream" vid. ,included in the "A" Box..I noticed that you own them all, check it out. Cheers
This is my favourite Tull album and I only got seriously into the band about 5 years ago. I believe it's not Anderson's most favoured, a bit like with Robert Fripp and 'Lizard', which happens to be my favourite King Crimson album. I'd heard of the Chateau recordings but haven't listened to them yet. Hopefully I can get this book or 'Night Cap' at least. Cheers, Ian
This is a gem of a box set. According to Ian Anderson I must be mad, as he doesn't rate it himself, personally I prefer it over TAAB, sorry Ian. This is Steve Wilson at his best, piecing back together the Chateau timeline as Ian had originally recorded it, stripping it of IA's 90's flute additions, taking us back to the 70's and how it might have sounded if it had been released as intended. The Chateau tapes are as good as the official later album. I also love the inclusion of The Foot of the Stairs material on Passion Play itself, cut out by Ian from the album proper. Stephen Wilson's respect and truth to the original material is another reason for me (from the many) I love these box sets.
Hi Keith, thank you for watching and sharing your very useful and informative overview. I agree, Steven Wilson has really created something special with these sets. Phil

Yes Phil, went back to no T.V. 3years ago watch d.v.d. sometimes. L.P. for you to keep spinning.
And PS: I'm having a milo 😂❤ And YES Phil , i did hear that " stop watching the news and listen to music . . . " may i say that i totally agree with your thoughts 😂❤ Another great show. Greetings from Western Australia
Passion Play got such a drubbing by the critics at the time . I loved it from the very first listen . It reinforced my conviction never to listen to critics. 😂❤
Hi Mike, thank you 🙏 for watching and your kind comments. I am hoping this video series will raise awareness to the powers that be that a reissue program would be well received! Phil
Phil has the true jewel in the crown of Tulls back catalogue "Living in the past" been given this deluxe box set treatment? I know there was a 25th anniversary two cd set and I can't find little else. To me this album was the true "king of the hill" of Tull albums.
@@johnthompson7611 completely true ,I bought living in an old album store ,and rember it smelling moldie ,but somehow it added to the intrigue of Tull ,I still listen to it on my phone andisevthe smell lol
This is the best Jethro Tull album above Thick as a Brick for his composition , sophistication and power , all members in this album performed at their best. Passion Play to me is the best progressive rock album ever made surpassing albums from their competitors Pink Floyd, Yes , Genesis and King Crimson . Even Thick as a Brick is better than the competitors . Thanks for sharing .

1973 Was an important year for me. My life has hinged on this year. As has been said in the comments, the music of this period was beyond anything.
I was only a year old but my parents had all the albums and this began my musical journey
I was 15 when this was released
I thought it to be a perfect follow up to TAAB.

@@NowSpinningMagazine It's true. One of the sections on the second side of the LP was reworked years later and played live as a Jig.

Great remix. Nice extension to album and some strong chateau extras with nice new sound
