I only learned about this when the album came out, and the album came after the (small?) tour was done. I was mad i never got to watch the performance, and +10 years later i'm even more mad.
I watched this piece in my performance studies at uni, and I love it! There is so much symbolism, and the use of the stage, actors, movement and multimedia simultaneously is fascinating. Perfect example of Parataxis. Absolutely love it.
Gravity ceases to exist on a subatomic level. Sometimes "theories" are a nice way of explaining phenomena, and making them accessible to our little brains. I suspect that evolution is a true theory, but there are, perhaps, other explanations too. It always trips me out to wonder what it is that keeps me breathing, keeps my heart beating, keeps me blinking, etc. Evolution does not necessarily explain the extra-sensory, parascientific aspect of life.
@VeniceKnipe contemporary dance is all about abstract movements that represent something, without the meaning being obvious to the viewer. every movement has a meaning.
So glad to see you have a youtube channel. Years and years ago (maybe 1990?), I went to Edinburgh Festival and saw a piece of yours in an art museum. We stood on different levels of the museum and looked down onto the performance. The perspective of looking down at the floor seemed like watching the performers fall from the sky. It was beautiful. Do you have any idea what piece that might have been? I still think about it over 20 years later.
björk (debut, medúlla, dr9), tagaq, evelyn glennie, meredith monk, japan (the band, specially the "tin drum" album)... i'm picking up a lot of great influences. still, i'm not sure i am convinced by the result... i was hoping for a stronger aesthetic statement than what i can see/listen to in this video.
I am not a scientist, nor have I studied that much into it, but I do find it some what fascinating. From what I've understood, a theory is a theory and not just an idea/guess etc. since there is evidence (not proof) that support it. When that evidence piles up, the more "safe" the theory becomes. The question is though, when should one call it fact? When has the evidence piled up enough so to speak?
@Mrster Indeed it is a theory, and also a fact. The scientific use of "theory" is often confused with "hypothesis. In science, theories never become facts, they are more important than facts. Eugenie C. Scott, executive director for the National Center for Science Education explains this quite well, along with many other leading scientists.
Again on the studio album I think that everyone would agree that the colouring of pigeons is the peak of the score especially when Karin Dreijer Andersson vocals come in after 60 mins of this slow timely build up. In the opera Karin Dreijer Andersson vocals are replaced by an actress who doesn't sound even close to the knife singer in tone or style from that moment i wanted to leave my seat. I have felt dupped by Hotel Pro Forma who are hiding their inapt show behind the name of the band.
You saw the opera! I'm jealous :) I'm too far away to see it :( I run out of characters here.... Yes a theory is "just a theory", but there are powerful theories out there, like the Theory of Relativity, upon which all our modern technology relies. You raise a legitimate point which makes up an entire school of study: Philosophy of Physics ("what is a theory? law? how do we really know something is true?"). If going this route, must be willing to question all basic assumptions of what is true
A proven theory becomes a law, not a fact, and only with time does it evolve into that.Theories are based primarily off of experiments that give scientist facts. Yet, with Darwin's theory of evolution, there isn't too much that can be taken as a concrete fact. I fully support the idea of evolution, but an even deeper and more important question to consider is: how did the first form of life begin? Was it spontaneous? Or is there a creator? Take a look into quantum reality, its very interesting!
Unfortunately there is no full-length video available. You must come to see the show. Follow Hotel Pro Forma via facebook or our website to find out where we play next.
I see. Yes, that's true. I'll look into it, when I have the time. Haha that's too bad! ^^ Unfortunately it's very short, or it felt short anyway. It's like 80 minutes.
If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts. This means all theories are right, and all theories are wrong, it just depends on who the observer is.
Evolution? That idea is only due to misunderstanding of the scientific use of "theory." It is indeed a theory, and also a fact. In science, a theory never becomes a fact, theories are more important than facts. Eugenie C. Scott, executive director for the National Center for Science Education explains that quite well, along with many other leading scientists.
It's funny, because when I listen to this album [without having seen any video], the imagery my brain makes is beautiful. But...this...I'll stick with my imagination.
If you are trolling, you're in teh right place. If you actually want to learn, then google it. You are interested in the difference between Theory and Physical Law, or Laws of Physics. Look it up. As far as whether or not evolution is a theory, no its not a theory - its been proven in lab scenarios! The effect of natural selection, etc. that make up 'evolution' exist! 'Evolution' is just a natural process. By itself does not imply that man descended from apes. Fossil records and DNA do that.
Wrong. The word pregnant has many different meanings. Because of this, I can view Lisa as being pregnant, and someone else can view her as not being pregnant. If we define pregnant as having a child or other offspring developing in the body, then Lisa has a high probabibility of having a developing child in her body if we observe that she has a bulging midsection. Lisa may have a large tumor developing, not a child.
No I'm not trolling. And if you'd care to tell me here, go ahead. Well then, I should've been clearer with what I meant with evolution. But still, a theory's a theory isn't it? But yeah, this is the wrong place for this anyway. Enjoy the song, the opera was great.
This it is the worst show that I have ever paid for. The reason why I the studio album was because i felt it gave you the soundscapes to use your imagination. Watching live was boring pretentious repetitive and most of all cunning.
This is just the worst thing I've ever seen. We saw it live and...wow. It's just as bad as it seems. People in the audience were laughing. I wanted to leave but sadly we were sitting in the front row so that might have been a bit rude I guess.
How wonderful to read your comment, I was so lucky to be on tour with the performance, Kirstens works are always spectacular and food for mind/being 🖤
I only learned about this when the album came out, and the album came after the (small?) tour was done. I was mad i never got to watch the performance, and +10 years later i'm even more mad.
One of the most staggeringly beautiful and well-done works of art I have ever seen.
I watched this piece in my performance studies at uni, and I love it! There is so much symbolism, and the use of the stage, actors, movement and multimedia simultaneously is fascinating. Perfect example of Parataxis. Absolutely love it.
Encore une merveille musicale qui nous soit offerte par le talentueux duo THE KNIFE! It is just fantastic!
It was my first opera-experience and i must say it was realy good. Nice laser/light-show.
HAVE to come to Brazil!!!! Pleeeease! OMFG! Amazing Electro-Opera!
Looks incredible!

The knife contribuyó con la obra componiendo la música, nadamas, no están tocando en vivo.

LOVELY!

@yaj78 i wanted to complain, but you summed it up perfectly.
i found the lyrics of the song on the hotel pro forma site.
its called: The Height of Summer
when is this next in England? can't believe I missed it at The Barbican!!
que coisa maluca...mas eu gostei muito!
OMG!
Dropping a stone will make it fall to the ground. That's a concept. Explaining how and why is the theory. Right?
Anybody knows when they are performing again?? Would love to see it live!!!!!

@Mrster Yeah, just like the Theory of Gravity
does anyone knows where can i get the full lenght video? i REALLY want to see it full
I see. Yes, that's true. I'll look into it, when I have the time.
Haha that's too bad! ^^ Unfortunately it's very short, or it felt short anyway. It's like 80 minutes.
@MCMBPR one of the greatest bands period electronic or not
@goooch That's 'the Height of Summer'

i love it.

pero... the knife nunca hace presentaciones... es un cover ? o es ella ?
does anyone knows where can i all the opera?
@MrsNikiGubler I get the feeling we're in the same class...
Очень круто. Жалко в РФ этого никто никогда не увидит.
Isn't it part of the scientific philosophy that pretty much everything IS a theory that COULD be wrong? I'm curious and would like to know if you do.
maybe Mogley52 should write an electro-opera about the origins of pontification
Jadorè
Where can one purchase the DVD for this opera?
If Lisa is pregnant, she is still pregnant even if an observer thinks she is not.
That is a fact.
I love opera and I love The Knife/Fever Ray.......but this just doesnt work for me at all. Its just weird for the sake of being weird.
you know what would've been more enjoyable than this?
watching hobos dance while you're on psychadelics.
probably cheaper too.
seriously.
@bezene54 ouais, j'y etais aussi :)
Indeed. Still a theory though.
If this doesn't tour in America I will forever boycott all Charles Darwin Inspired Opera's.
Some things you can see, are also theoretical.
Watch the brand new documentary film about Hotel Pro Forma and the creative team on their latest production 'War Sum Up'

Im not sure if I like this or not. Sometimes I feel like the dancers are just moving strangely without purpose. Other than that I like the music.
its so difficult to understand o.O

What in fuck are they doing with their arms?

Aphex Twin did it better
This is just the worst thing I've ever seen. We saw it live and...wow. It's just as bad as it seems. People in the audience were laughing. I wanted to leave but sadly we were sitting in the front row so that might have been a bit rude I guess.
this is so disappointing.
