- Joe and Sean are back in the Video Dungeon and they've brought a hidden gem with them! An old man falls ill after pricking his finger on an exotic flower and is rushed to the hospital, where he births an insect from his mouth that then grows to gigantic proportions. It's kind of a big bug! Officer Duane Barry teams up with Doctor Klingon and that cop from the Super Mario Bros Movie getting a heel massage, to put an end to the creature and its mate before their eggs hatch and they are totally overrun. You know, like in Aliens... but not really! So grab your medical grade laser 'cause we're talking Blue Monkey (aka Insect)!

Take a 50s style horror film in the tradition of "Them" and "The Fly," cross it with the spectacular special effects of the 80s and you've got Blue Monkey. This bizarre tale of horror begins in a greenhouse where a mysterious plant rubs its first victim the wrong way. So wrong that he lands at County Memorial Hospital where he give "birth" to a hideous wormlike creature! Police Detective Jim Bishop (Steve Railsback) and Doctors Glass and Carson (Susan Anspach, Gwynyth Walsh) manage to contain the "thing," but within hours, the Blue Monkey has developed into a grotesque insect of gigantic proportions. Now roaming the corridors looking for its favorite food-human bones-the creature is virtually indestructible. And when it produces an egg-laying female, only one course of action seems apparent. Blow the hospital and everyone inside away. Also starring Don Lake, John Vernon, and Helen Hughes, with cameos by Joe Flaherty and Robin Duke.

And that's one of my favorite parts about the movie The crazies is after everything then escaping their town getting nuked it all just starts over again in the next town they make it too because they're still being tracked and potentially contaminating another city

Nice review, I remember a snarky canadian youtuber review it and one thing for sure is that you never see a "Blue Monkey". It's good to hear that it finally got a blu ray treatment after it was never released on DVD.

Another banger guys, never heard of this movie, can't wait to watch it now! I see very little similarities to Alien, it's not like Alien was the first movie to have a "thing" come out of someone and wreak havoc..Like you said, is more of a 50's "giant bug" movie but for modern audiences

Like my favorite VHS rental stores as a kid with a solid horror section near the adult door. You have it on your shelf, looks amazing and I'm checking this out.
The little blond girl was Sarah Polley. From Dawn of the Dead remake and Baron Munchausen. I guess that’s why she survived DotD because she already dealt with killer giant fucking bugs and The insane Baron as a kid! 🤔

Hi Joe, Hi Shawn. I want to thank you for introducing me to Theodore Rex and the Joe Bob episode on youtube. As an Australian this was my first exposure to Joe Bob's Monstervision but I can't help but feel like he threw the film under the bus.
Yes I agree its a bad film but I feel its one of those so bad its good type of flicks and I really enjoyed it.
After watching the Movie Dumpster Theodore Rex episode I had to experience it for myself.
I could tell right away that this project was someone's labor of love and it definatly came across in the finished product.
For all the drama behind the scenes that you talked about in your episode I think they nailed the character and set designs, so much effort must of gone into the puppetry and practical effects.
As you guys mentioned in your review the cg work suffered in some scenes but overall it was a fantastic film.
Thank you again for introducing me to a film I knew nothing about.
P.S I found you guys through Hack The Movies and just between you and me Joe is way more important and famous than Tony will ever be 🤣😉.

Newish to the channel still playing catch-up. But you mentioned all the Railsback roles, but probably his big breakout role in Helter Skelter. So he’s got both Gein and Manson under his belt. Always remember his small part in Armed and Dangerous with John Candy. Underrated buddy comedy imo. Loving the channel btw. Hours of content.

Ya know.. when movies have two titles, I am befuddled as to why the name that is the least relevant is the billed title (at least in the states.)

On second thought, if I thought Dolph Lundgren was an alien I'd have never bothered watching Dark Angel.
Now I'm stuck trying to make out of focus VHS sleeves. That Ninja Turtles 3 caught my eye and I can't stop.
Had a crappy bootleg of Blue Monkey as a kid and was so hyped for this release until the rights issues came up. I believe Code Red was able to acquire it but due to the owner's medical issues Code Red made a distribution deal with Kino Lorber on a good chunk of their catalog. This Blu was exclusive to Ronin-flix's website for a month and then everywhere else soon after. I know Kino has been re-releasing some back catalog of Code Red's since 2020 with Dark Force Entertainment and Scorpion Releasing seemingly joining as well in 2021.
Side note but considering Joe is rocking what looks to be a "Scared to Death" tee and Vinegar Syndrome just popped that out on 4K Blu-ray here's hoping we get an episode on it!

i used to like this movie as a kid and then found it o youtube to watch. fun movie.
The bug wouldn’t have gotten that big if not for those kids. How did the plant cut the old man (no thorns)? What was that plant supposed to be? How does it infect people so bugs come out of them?
I think the bug functions like a parasite, the thorn is just a transportation device to its host. Get pricked and the bug gets in the blood and starts gestating immediately. That's my head cannon at least haha. That bug still could have been a problem, imagine an army of those things at the size that worm was? Totally different movie but I would not want to deal with that swarm haha! -Sean
As always great video. I'll have to check out Blue Monkey, it looks like a cool 80s scary movie. In terms of checking out rare movies, i like to watch them online, and if i really like it, then i will buy it.
By the way just wondering ahve you guys seeing a movie called I Come in Peace (1990). It stars the great Dolph Lundgren who is part of the MDU with The Punisher, its basically about a badass alien in the form of a human that comes to earth, and Lundgren, a alien bounty hunter also in human appearance teams up with an FBI agent to take him down.

A great many movies are a great deal like Alien. Did you know that Ripley was originally going to be played by a man, and Arnold was at the top of the list. Imagine that movie without Weaver! It loses a lot!

Dude just a bit of free advice you guys need to concentrate on reviewing the films you discuss and nothing more, I don't mind the nice bits of movie trivia but you can't just trail off in discussion and talk about something else unless it relates to the movie you're reviewing, this was like 90 minutes I could have spent watching the movie on my own time. Aside from that I like hearing about obscure B-movies from your channel.
