- The metal of this kind of scythe is rather thin and soft. The tool is used to reshape and thin out the cutting edge. The whetstone is used at the end to remove a possible burr and for the final sharpness. This process is necessary after few hours of work. In between, the whetstone is used regularly to sharpen the scythe.

Отдыхаю я хорошо, только устаю очень.
Теперь гудят и дымят.
У моего отца был отбойник для отбивания косы, сделанный из большого напильника. Этим отбойником и я пользовался несколько лет, пока он не испортился окончательно, треснув чуть ли не пополам, после чего я, работая кузнецом, выковал новый из рессоры КамАЗ а, такие отбойники я многим людям ковал, в итоге и себе тоже. А отбойник подобного вида как в ролике, видеть ни разу не доводилось, интересная конструкция, однако.
И ещё, что хотелось бы сказать, это то, что перед тем, как отбивать косу, её следует очистить от остатков травы.
на этом говне не отобьёшь, это по звизде ладошкой, нужен очень твёрдый и массивный отбой и очень твёрдый молоток. у меня отбой кованый, отец кузнецом был, конусный в основании 70 на 50мм. отбиваю даже китайские косы. конечно не в один заход, толстые и местами супер твёрдые. делал из рашпиля и из верхней и нижней части, не то.
Ещё заточка на весу удивляет. Можно без пальцев остаться. Да и не наточил он косу, так это - баловство.

@@KAJI9lH ну о чём я и говорил, что из напильника (рашпиля) отбойник лучше, чем показанный в ролике. Но у таких, из напильника, есть один минус - рабочая часть просто откалывается, и порой так, что отбойник починке уже не подлежит. Из рессоры всё же лучше, мой, что я сам ковал уже лет двадцать назад, до сих пор в рабочем состоянии.
А косить то ты дядька не умеешь 🤣🤣 и коса даже под тебя не настроена.... Через метров 100 хер разогнешся....
Меня отец учил, а его дед, что отбивать нужно с оттягом молотком на наковальне. И когда косишь, спину держать прямо и косить с поворотом туловища.
С его ударами не отбить

совершенно верно, еще коса должна подрезать, а не рубить. а вообще эта коса №5-6 ей только картофельник косить, для трав нужно № 7-9 и т.д...

Вспомнил детство...когда рано утром .по деревне шел перестук молоточков.косы люди отбивали .. потом шли с дедушкой косить траву ..как то все добрее были.время было отличное.ни забот ни хлопот..детство...

Это точно. Но отлично настроенная коса, это ВЕЩЬ.
Если делать покос то конечно косой, а покосить территорию все же лучше тримером, лучше шарит по закоулкам. Современные косы не клепаются, металл хрупкий, не тянется, но если точилом сделать хорошие спуски, то заточку держит дольше, чем клепанная. Видео дилетантское во всем.
@@svarogua9берешь газовый балончик и прокаливаешь режущую кромку. Тут же рядом таз с водой для охлаждения несущей части косы. 2-3 захода и режущая кромка становится пластичной. Главное не переборщить. Ну и на камень не нарваться..

Brought back memories helping my grandpa flatten and sharpen the scythe blade. So many snakes when the grass gets that tall. Good feed for the livestock however.

They aren't omnivores, usually their stomachs can't handle the contents of say songbirds because it's not part of their diet.
To be omnivore means you have both greens and meat as your regular diet and your stomach can handle both very well, so no, they are not omnivores.

Если косить неудобицы с сорными травами и мелкой порослью кустарника, отбитое лезвие быстро ломается, оно жёсткое и хрупкое. А тонко заточенное, но не отбитое лезвие спокойно режет даже деревца до 2см толщиной без повреждений, как и сухие стебли сорных трав. Правда точить лезвие приходится часто.

Не знал про такую особенность отбитого лезвия.🤔 А что - трещина образуется и вглубь полотна уходит? Глубоко? Или только кромка выкрашивается?
Сам я только точил оселком. И да! Двухлетнюю одеревеневшую уже осенью поросль только так срубает. Только места крепления к косью жалко, напрягает.
Я не спец в отбивании косы, но отбивал несколько раз.Мне мужик постарше на работе говорил вроде как с оттяжкой надо отбивать.

Заказала косу на Авито винтажную. Косить в детстве учили, отбивать - нет.
Пытаюсь понять, насколько я это осилю в городских условиях.

Witam. Dziadek szedł do sklepu i kamykiem stukał w każde ostrze i po dźwięku wybierał to najlepsze ostrze, następnie klepał nowo nabytą kosę bez takich cudów. Po wyklepaniu ostrzył kosę ale nie osełką a kamieniem znalezionym w potoku efekt końcowy był niesamowity. Trawa na sam widok padała :) Wkładał o wiele mniej siły w koszenie.

Miałem nawet to szczęście doświadczyć jeszcze podobnego „rytuału” :) Ale niestety klepać kosy nie potrafię, pomimo że znalazłem babkę (ten metalowy walcowaty przyrząd).
O kamieniu z rzeki natomiast pierwsze słyszę - ciekawe jaki to powinien być rodzaj skały, bo to pewnie jest najistotniejsze.

I enjoyed using a scythe at an old job . It is great for cutting down patches that have grown too tall for lawnmowers . Mowers are great for keeping a consistent low height once the height is under control .

I’m from a small village and now, after I moved to a big city about 7 years ago, seeing this video I remember how I also had to beat off my scythes, I didn’t have such a device, rather just a small anvil driven into a stump and a hammer with a square head. Thanks for the nostalgia 👍
Any hobby that involves physical exercise is a good hobby in my book. Rare thing to see, especially here in Texas where it only rains once or twice a summer.
Physical exercise, that was one of the main reasons for me to start this.

Scythe is the fastest tool for grass this long, even than electric trimmers and lawn mowers. The latter just clog up with the fallen grass.

Не ужели ручка на косе для вас удобно. У вас из за неправильной ручки спина наклонена и следовательно быстро устает от нагрузки. Отрегулируйте либо переделайте ручку. Выглядит со стороны именно так

IMPORTANT: Don't use this technique to try and sharpen American scythes. You have to use a sharpening stone or file on those instead.

where i live,the men - farmers - whoever did it, took also the wooden - handle- off the scythe. Then they sat down on the big wooden block.
And sharpened their tools .
No water,just a very specific and very - hard - hammer.
Took them the better part of an hour and it was done befor a working day.

Тупой что-ли, он работает нафига его чистить? Трава ест метал 😂 у меня есть коса ему наверно лет 40, дед его исползовал, после уже иногда я, так вот все это время лезвию никогда не чистили и прикинь трава все ещё не села 😂
@@user-xt4qw8ke8hПотому что от травы наждак забивается. Да и чтобы хорошо косу отбить надо её с черенка снять. Если угол плохой просто край лезвия выломается. Судя по Вашему комментарию понятно почему Ваши родственники косу не чистили раз у них такой вундеркинд получился.
My great grandma was AWESOME story teller, and one of them was one of Her earliest memories, deep in very very rural Polish country side, my great grandma's father was sitting on bag of potatoes/beatroots, etc, between his legs(knees) was one of his working shoes. This day my grandma in age less than 10yo learned how scythe works, first my great great grandpa was hitting it with possibly big and square stone wrapped in rag, after 2 hrs of work that started as seemingly hitting edge blindy, to my gggrandpa at the end using dry stick and magnifying glass size of coin, ppl were carrying that coz u could make a fire, call for help using reflection "rabbits" as we call them, or like my gggrandpa, was using this lense to look at scythe and with stick was straightening it rly to the lvl of inhuman precision, after that he was covering cutting edge with THICK, I mean THICK (2-3cm at least) layer of lard, then he pulled out sharpening stone and nanny asked why he didn't use it at begging, his answer was roughly : if there are Prussian bomb holes in ground you can spend just one day to fill one with soil and sand and go on, u can also in one day cover them with planks and put some soil. But I honestly pity next person to walk on this land full of "wolf holes"*
My grandma was supposedly really like him, for a fact I know that when Nazis raided their village he put scythe blade not like 90° break but straight what was effecting in Polish equivalent to Glaive**
** Difference is that blade wasn't heavy and massive as in glavies, it was very thin but also literally razor sharp, u can cut a pigs head off and only thing u would feel is spine cord(bones) but when it comes to flesh, u feel absolutely 0 resistance if it's sharpened and mounted right way,
*(kind of very very simple and very very effective trap for wolves that kept bullying and livestock and humans in these times)

Love this. Will look for that tool. Brilliant way to straighten the edge. Never thought of it necessary, but of course when I think about it. Only learn by doing on my own with my dad's (now inherited) tools, figuring stuff out.
find ich super das überhaupt noch jemand eine Sense benutzt,es muss ja nicht immer der motorisierte Rasenmäher sein wenn man eine kleine Fläche hat👍
Danke! Kleine Fläche ist relativ, ich habe dieses Jahr bis jetzt ca. 800 bis 1000 qm mit der Sense gemäht. Vor der Obsternte gehe ich dann unter den Bäumen nochmal durch.

@@maik0190 Ich dengel meistens früh am Morgen, da ist das Gras noch schön feucht und die Sense läuft gut. Zum Glück bin ich da außerhalb und wecke keine Nachbarn auf.

For those who haven't used a scyth, they work REALLY well for a large amount of super high grass. Compared to highly priced tractors to accomplish the same clearing ability
I love my scythe. I have a old one from the early 1900s. Got the matching pitch fork and sickle. Have never done this method I honestly just use a carbide file. But I understand the concept
Когда правят косу то ее лучше держать так, пятка упирается в левое плечо и левая рука держит косу , а правая рука оселок. От себя правится коса , не длинными движениями с обоих сторон.
И да, нормальный хозяин когда покос окончен, берет траву и протирает косу. ✌️😉 Как-то так
А отбивать так, не знаю, мутно как-то. Весь процесс проходит в слепую...
Я в детстве так чуть палец не отрезал когда косу точил...) Чирк, и всё...

🤝 Чуть, не считается ☝️😁 для этого случая делали так, обматывали травой половину оселка , получался буртик. Ну и естественно сначала процесс проходил долго, а потом уже при маломальском опыте, уже без травы..
Вот поэтому оселок имеет такую форму. Жаль что тебе не встретился дядя Коля, как мне.

Слава Богу, что есть в комментах те, кто понимает всю суть бреда который показан. Коса грязная, не протёр. Отбивают косу чтобы железо с края тоньше сделать, наточить, она как лезвие становиться. А он её просто постучал.
Ну и косит он как чудила. На покосе умер бы от усталости.
Ну почему вслепую, ты же видишь заднюю часть. Не нравится вернулся. Вот как раз при такой оттяжек, мне кажется, и отбив будет равномернее и править надо меньше. Шикарно
Когда видишь процесс, как-то надёжнее. Ведь оттяжка железа должна быть примерно одинаковая, где-то раз стукнул, а где-то пару раз... Я бы ещё сказал что нормально, но круглая форма....... Если только попробовать, квадратную! 🤔

Hätte ja nur der Optik gedient. Mit dem nassen Gras an diesem Tag hätte das nur den Unterschied gemacht, dass dann danach meine Hände grün gewesen wären. 🙂

У нас в станице на Дону всё было гораздо проще. Косы отбивали на коротком обрезке старого плоского напильника сантиметров шесть шириной и около сантиметра толщиной вбитого в такой-же пенёк. Перед началом сенокоса стук стоял по всей округе.

Something I did not see since I was in the elementary school. In North Italy, we had sort of a nail hammered in the soil for half its lenght and then used as and anvil for hammering the scythe blade. Usually this job was reserved to the oldest man in the family (greatest experience and greatest patience too😅)

Ich kenne das System es funktioniert gut und schnell. Aber mein Großvater hat gesagt das die sense nicht ganz so scharf wird wie wen er es von hand auf dem Amboss macht. 👍
Там проковка по плоскости идёт, а должна быть под углом. Толку от такого устройства минимум.

Отбивать не лучший вариант. У нас косы обдирают. Она даже звучать начинает иначе. Точится бруском в два взмаха. Как вариант - шрабер. Один из способов быстро ободрать лишнее
I dont have that in my country but what I do is straighten the sharp edge with normal pliers(not the pointy pliers) and sharpen the edge with normal metal round shape file, works amazing for me, I know the stone gives more durable sharp but I don't use the scythe that much like those German fellows that cuts the grass of half mountain in a morning

Really neat video and I love the scythe, I want one now. It did hurt my heart a little when you was cutting down those beautiful wildflowers in your grass though, those things were gorgeous.
That’s a fancy device 😅 my grandpa used a piece of an old file with rounded top edge. Its tail is good to be stuck into a stump, and the top edge basically becomes a small anvil. Downside - this job requires a really good skill

You should carry your "stone" with you in a wet water holding pouch as you need it in the field for touch-ups.
As I said, you need to keep it wet when using it.
Scythe supply has books and video on how to care for your new scythe as well as different blades depending on what you are cutting as well as tools to keep your scythe in perfect shape.
A good grim reaper needs to keep their soul gathering scythe SHARPE!!
It seems he carries a steel file or steel sharpening rod instead . Much easier than the complicated method you suggest . A steel file can quickly touch up the edge on the move and doesn't require a special water pouch . When I was paid to use a scythe not far from Germany I was issued a flat steel file to maintain the edge .
Yes, that does "work" but a file is still just too course as IF your blade is properly edged as this man is doing here, then a fine stone is all that is needed to put the razor edge on it.
AND it does NOT take off nearly as much metal as a file does saving your blade and extending its life.
We use what we are taught to use but seem never to think that there is always a better alternative.
All my blades are field sharpened with a stone and have lasted me a long time.
I can wade into a field of tall grass and nip the tops or take the whole plant to the ground with one swipe.
It gets easier to tell when to get out your wet stone like the one I carry in my belt that sits in a copper wet sheath.
A file as I said it just too course and will rust.
As you cut, you can feel the blade's resistance to the plants you're cutting and that tells you when to get out the stone which is incredibly easy to touch up your blade with a few back and forth strokes.
If we were to side by side show each other's blades under magnification, Mine would be smooth and shiny with NO marks while yours would be greatly scored and the edges ragged.
Also, if we measured the wear on the blades, mine would most likely not even show a reduction in wear as yours would certainly be much less.
Next time you get a new blade, get out a good micrometer and measure the width of the blade at new and in the same place.
After about a month of use, and using your file, measure it again and you'll see quite a bit of difference in blade width.

Stump swages are awesome, nearly forgotten tools that come in many styles and purposes. The steel in American blades like this are two brittle, they'll chip half of the time instead of realigning.
Can they be detempered or annealed?

Hardened material dosent bend out of shape... so no therfore no need to rebend it...
You just said it "chips" and dosent bend....so how did it get bent out of shape? Something seems fishy abut that story you made up...
If you do have a hardened scythe that needs fixin...

@@DES.REVER.DESIGNS A, not all "hardened" blades are brittle, material has a lot to do with it. B, carbon blades such as this can be heated, bent, sharpened and retreated. The point is that blades from other places are different from most in the states and yes, a hardened blade can chip. Yes, a grinder can work, that's not the point. The only thing "fishy" is your lack of grasping the concept of this whole thing.

My grandfather use to chuck the scythe only on small anvil and oposite,pointy side of a hammer...it was scary sharp.

It doesn't hurt to clean the grass off the blade before sharpening it. Otherwise that stone can slip awfully easily and you'll need a bandage. 🙃
That's completely true, happened to me. Carelessly sharpening the blade, stone slipped and I got a 5mm deep cut in my thumb. Scar is still visible after 20 years.

To nie jest dobry przyrząd do ostrzenia kosy. Ostrzy się nim jedynie bardzo wąskie pasemko ostrza, a całą resztę pozostawia grube. W Polsce, na Ukrainie, Białorusi i całym Wschodzie używa się zupełnie innej "baby do klepania" kosy, takiej, która pozwala na wyklepanie kosy niczym żyletki. Pozdrawiam

Not gonna lie, the scythe is a good low cost tool when you got lots and lots of tall grass
To anyone who cares, scything is much healthier for grass than lawnmowers. Lawnmowers chew up the grass violently, while scythes leave a very clean cut
