Back in the day, George Roberts and Alan Raph were the only names I knew in bass trombone players. My goal was to play as well or better than them. I believe I accomplished this by 1975. However, by '75 there were many more bass trombone players out there (Dave Bargeron, Tony Studd, etc.). But, I could hang in there with them. Today, there are more bass trombone players out there than one can shake a stick at, and most are better than I ever was during my heyday. I'm so glad to see this "beast" of an instrument has progressed so much in the past 50+ years!
