    As a Beijing trained Tang Lang practitioner/instructor, I'm delighted to see an instructor on RUclips who appears to actually know how the system works!

    yea well depends on your striking techniques and how you use your mantis hook, I have never injured my fingers and with proper conditioning exercises you can build strength in all aspects of your strikes, my main 2 fingers can puncture apples, oranges, grapefruit, and pineapple up to the first joint about 1inch, and have broke has many has 8 ceramic tiles. I use various techniques depending on many aspects of mantis styles.I'm 53 and have many years and studied many styles of Praying mantis.....NEVER LIMIT YOUR SELF AND EXPLORE ALL ASPECTS OF TRAINING, AS WELL AS STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING EXERCISES. I also combine my Praying mantis with other styles like snake, dragon, tiger, and butterfly palm strikes...

    Great set of videos man. I practice karate and we do have a hooking block, but this makes a lot of sense and something I can incorporate. Thanks a lot!

      What's cool is that I do the exact thing you mentioned to guard against. Anytime someone grabs my hand I do a quick snaking motion around their wrist to break the grip almost instinctively. This is a very impressive variation on the hooking block, it feels more complete. Thank you for sharing.

      Niagara Kung Fu Academy what catches my eye in mantis is how it over powers people, I'm smaller and i want to learn sweeps and how to properly do it in a self defence street defense situation or when ppl try to use mma stuff. Also these breakdowns and little details are what makes your videos like this gold

    I’ve been studying northern mantis for several years now, and I really love it, but unfortunately we rarely specialize in sparring and other form applications. Do you have any advice for this sort of practice?

    • @HolisticKungFu
      @HolisticKungFu  6 лет назад +1

      Sparring and combat application are two different things. For sparring, study the two man set of bung-bo and practice it with a partner regularly, then try applying some of the movements in free sparring. Combative application doesn't need to be complex. To be effective in actual self defence the most important factors needed to be victorious are: strike first when justified, shake your opponent's foundation/balance, and continuously attack. You only need a handful of techniques in the syllabus to do this; it's better to practice one technique 1,000 times than 1,000 techniques only once.

    I have watched one of your videos before, and appreciated the insight you had into the forming of the Mantis Fist. I was disappointed to see, in this video, you chose to title it for views by bashing another practitioner. You cheapen all the wonderful information you just gave, by this petty action. It calls into question your Kung Fu motivation and is just so unnecessary. True Shaolin Principle would not bash or demean others in such an ungentlemanly fashion. Very disappointed. I hope you have mentally and emotionally grown since the date of this video. You would serve yourself well just to re-title it.

      Thanks for taking the time to write Sir. While I understand where you are coming from, and you have pointed out to me how the title could be taken the wrong way, it was not intended to demean or bash anyone, it was intended to present proper information where it is needed. Although it is a bit cheeky, I didn't think it was offensive at the time. While many people in the Martial art community criticize Jake Maze because of his lack of education in praying mantis, I instead attempted to offer a solution: help and educate. This was not meant to be malicious, but I do see your point.

      Your great info stands on it's own. It's entirely appropriate to comment you want to correct what you see as wrong technique. Calling out individuals is in bad taste and looks opportunitistic... piling on.
      I have too much respect for the great info you put out, to see stuff like that.
      We all err. But, how we move forward is the measure of a man.
