A trick to keep the plastic from cracking is to run your drill backwards. This prevents the teeth from biting into the plastic and essentially ends up melting through with friction.
I was just about to write the same
same here :-) @@Dina_tankar_mina_ord
And also you can mount a big spring around the pilot bit of a hole saw to eject the material plug after the cut.
Yeah and you can just shove a screwdriver into the hole on the side of the hole saw to pop the plastic discs out
Thank you for taking us to your beautiful garden, with your lovely daughter, she's very sweet I remember doing the same thing with my father even though I was a little girl he still taught me martial arts and mom took me to ballet and tap, I have so many good memories and learned so much. She's going to look back with a lot of love in her heart.
Reverse drill. Makes a cleaner cut when you cut into plastic.
yES! Use holes saw in REVERSE on plastic..and a little slower..if possible. I've also used tape and this seems to help as well.
That's what I do. Great comment.
@@forageforage3520 Yup, tape the plastic where you're going to drill. Generally using duct tape works best, you don't need a larger piece than the hole by too much. Then slowly drill the hole.
I tried this off camera with the finished bin and it didn't work at all. For soft materials like insulation foam it works great and have done it before with perfect success, but with the hard plastic there is nothing for the teeth to bite into so it just spins and spins.
Try a quick burst in the forward positing to create the kerf, then run it in reverse. I have the same Totes from Walmart, Lowe’s, and Home Depot. I get really clean holes.
Pro Tip: next time your using a hole saw in plastics. Drill the pilot hole forward and then reverse the drill and run the saw backwards. You'll get a perfect smooth cut with few if any burs. And no jumping.
I was just going to say the exact same thing. Makes things much easier and cleaner.
You sold me at "few if any burs."
Luke, excellent information. I started with using plastic Maxwell House coffee containers (I get them from my office... they save the used containers for me) and I still use them. Although they have very thin plastic, I didn't notice algae growth when using CFL's or T5 lights. But when I switched to high intensity Blue/Red LEDs, the algae growth was very prominent. I still use my Maxwell House containers under my T5 and for storing things like nutrients. For my LED's I use 1-gallon black buckets that I purchase from US Plastic Corp online. The individual buckets are moderately expensive, but the logistics of the smaller containers just works best for my way of growing. I'm digging your grow room/setup/video series, thanks for continuing to share! As always, thumbs up, you the man.
I like your videos. You do not waste a lot of time about yourself. You get to the point of what you are trying to accomplish. Good useful information. Thank you
Luke I look forward to following how this turns out. Good stuff
Also, I love the hole saw. I used one for building a self watering planter last summer. Before the hole saw the was using a Dremel saw and coring out the hole, hole saw much much better.
Luke once the drill bit goes through run your drill motor in reverse for the hole saw. It leaves a cleaner hole and doesn't grab as bad. Thanks for all your videos. We really enjoy them.
After the initial hole the bit makes run the drill backward with minimal pressure.
Seems I'm not the only one who knows about the driilling backwards on plastic trick..lol
You are not alone. Also all you need is a screwdriver to pop out the yellow discs.
Once you get the hole started running the hole saw backwards. helps to get a clean hole.
I tried this off camera witht he finished bin and it didn't work at all. For soft materials like insulation foam it works great and have done it before with perfect success, but witht he hard plastic there is nothing for the teeth to bite into so it just spins and spins.
@@MIgardener I wonder if you used painters tape over the area to be cut if that would eliminate the splintering...
@@MIgardener wonder if it's a different hole saw type. When I built the aeroponics tub it work really well that way. I'm going to have to try it again to make sure I'm not wrong about. Really enjoyed this video. Can't wait to see the rest of them.
@@gvc56100 that sounds like a good idea.
@@MIgardener I tried this tip and turned out great, maybe your hole saw isn't sharp enough?
I like to use Rubbermaid black tops. It’s a soft plastic that won’t shatter or crack when drilling or cutting no matter the thickness. Also the black tops means no light transmission into the container causing algae.
I am starting my Kratky and DWC as soon as my seeds sprout. Enjoyed the video and found it very helpful. Thanks
Wow, this is totally new to me. I designed my own hydroponics 30 years ago, but nothing like this at all! Really looking forward to this.
It works, but the plants are a little smaller than oxygenated solution. I did this twice, once without a bubbler and once with a bubbler. The bubbler version lettuce was a bit larger. I'd do it again though.
The slots on the side of the hole saw are good for putting a screwdriver through to push out the plugs of whatever you are cutting
That's what I always do!!!
hard to watch lol
When you’re cutting through the thin plastic or even the thicker plastic, put your drill in reverse it takes much smaller bites and makes a nice clean hole every time❤️🇺🇸
Take the lids off, and cut them on plywood (or something similar). Remember:: cut them with the drill in reverse - then at the last stage flip it into forward to finish it off. [ It Is Easier ] Also, you might be able to buy just new lids to redo them ... I think walmart sells lids separately
Great videos as always. TIP TIP here. I did the same with some junk worn hole saw bits. I took them and heated them with a propane torch and melted holes in. When cool I took a razor knife and cut the flash off. The result is a perfect hole. Please do outdoors.
Option #2, use a metal pipe and heat as well.
The holes on the side of the hole saw are so you can stick a screwdriver or other tool in there to push the waste out without removing the bit. Good video, been thinking about doing this over the Winter. Thanks
Great idea MIG. I am trying this today. Love your channel. Thanks for helping us newbies.
Thank you so much for showing how to cut the holes and also the tidbits about the lid thickness. 🙏
I learned how to do hydroponics from mphgardner on RUclips. He shows about 5 types of DIY hydroponics. And best of all he shows you trials with before and after where he makes it easier to do hydroponics. I love that guy. Honest and caring
Hi! Please share the person channel your talking about thanks
They’re going to look great! Looking forward to the next step :-)
Tooooooooooo funny.. I just got the Lowes 5 gallon version.. and I've got 2 Tom plants per 5 gall tote..Kratky! They are crazy happy camping right now. I used to do the 5 gallon round Dutch Bucket, which work great, but... I wanted to move away from using perilite and having to darken the round 5 gallon buckets. Anyways, those are great totes.. they are much heavier than the sterilite...I paid $4.98 + tax. THAT'S GREAT PRICE!
I have made these and it was suggested I start the whole cutter in reverse just a few rotations, then run it the right way, haven't had any plastic cracks since.
So cool, thanks for sharing! Do you think this method would work for growing spinach? I will be watching for updates! I am super interested to see how this progresses and what you use to feed the plants organically.
Those commander containers are great. The HDX varieties are also good. The lids are made of really thick plastic. Walmart sells bins that look similar to those sold at Lowes/Home Depot, but the plastic lid is much flimsier.
Well explained. Thanks for your time and energy. From Houston,Texas.
Hello from houston as well
I did try the Kratke method using fertilizers recommended to me. I watched the poor plant die an inch at a time. Yes the water came juuust to the bottom of the basket. Yes I did change the solution every 10 days. So I am watching your project with great interest, Luke.
You are not supposed to change the solution every 10 days with the Kratky method... You want the reservoir to change from water to air. Once it is almost empty of water then you refill about half way.
Also drilling those holes, might want to try drilling forward direction to get started, stop and finish in reverse. It'll make a smoother edge for the hole and the disks easier to remove.
use a screw driver and pop them out using the side holes, that for they are there for
Hey Luke thank you for this information. Where could I find the follow up video to this one?
Hey Luke maybe do an experiment and try one tote with air stone and others kratky. Just to see if any difference in plant growth/size. I've always used air stones and had great results. Fyi reverse drill while drilling and use rubbermaid 10 or 20 gallon totes. The plastic is softer on the lids and easier to drill. Also lids are dark blue or black to not let light in = no algae. Happy growing
The bit you're using is technically called a Hole Saw Bit. A trick with them when cutting plastics is to drill the small drill bit in to the material forward (clockwise) until the hole saw hits it, then switch the drill to reverse and drill through the material in reverse. This will cut a much nicer hole, the disk it cuts out *should* fall off, and it will burn through the plastic instead of the teeth catching on and biting in to it which is what causes the rough hole, cracking, shredding, and splitting in thin materials like these plastic lids.
Wow another amazing super great video info and analysis from absolutely the best channel on utube thank you keep up the good work pp
Great idea luke! I've been slowly experimenting with hydroponics. I would love to do this for my lettuce! Can't wait to try this, thx!
I need to make some for when the seeds I ordered from you get here. Have you tried the tower planter? My husband wants to get me one for my birthday.
Haha. I do believe you meant not opaque. 😉
I've thought about yet never tried hydroponics; however, this video has me thinking about it again. Thanks for another great video!
Nope, he meant opaque...not transparent.
The openings in the side of the hole saw can be used by inserting a screwdriver/etc. To push those plugs back out of your saw/bit.
Also, you will have better results if you use the variable speed of that drill instead of just flicking it on for a fraction of a second at 100% power.
Just some things I noticed - no disrespect intended and still thanks for the vid.
once you get your bit trough the top reverse your drill to cut the hole it will be much smoother less tears. blessings Herby
@MIgardner Hey Luke, I am wondering if the spacing would be the same if you plan to use more of a cut and come again method vs growing big heads of lettuce? Also would arugula grow well this way? Thanks! Jenn
Link isn't in the description for net cups😯
Luke, why make things harder than they have to be...? why not insert a screw driver thru the vent hole in the hole saw and push out the cut outs. No disassembly needed! Hey?
He's not a wood worker or he'd know how to remove cut out
Why cut in between square just cut in the squares.
Recently, I saw a lady at Costco buying bookoodles of the little ones. (I have a ton of the 27 gallon ones for laundry baskets and outdoor chicken supply storage. They're amazing!) I wondered what she was going to do with those. Now, I am wondering if she was doing this over winter with them.
After you get the pilot hole in, put drill in reverse. Melt versus cut will leave you with less burrs. I highly recomend watching Jeb Gardener. Lots of kratky vids, and a little bit of humor.
Luke, enjoy your videos, and include my vote for drilling backwards!
Those drill bits drill better holes through plastic in reverse.
Corona virus has me watching this😂😂I never saw myself growing my own food look at me now
Get on it girlie lol
What organic nutrient solution is good for this non circulating system?)
Love this idea!
Love this ideal
wow that a neat set up
Luke, could you please add the link to the net cups in the description like you said you would in the video? Thank you!
Food for thought. When you’re drilling the circular holes get the teeth in to start then go in reverse to drill the hole! Cleaner cut less difficult
Those hole saws have slits in the side so you can stick a screwdriver into them to "knock out" stuck material like plastic... And drill backwards in plastic.
use a backing board for drilling the holes on the thinner tops
Use solo cups instead of net pots, take a hot soldering iron and poke holes
dont inhale
Run the drill backwards it sort of heats up the hole, less damage.
when choosing a container do you need to be concerned with whether or not its food grade/food safe ?
I use the same exact totes in my system. Paint the tops black.
Luke..so between the 2 indoor methods..soil or hydro..which would you prefer to do?
This is probably the 145th time ive seen someone make this type of video on youtube.
Do you See the holes in the sides of the red circle bit, I use a long medal PEICE to get those PEICES out
It prevents me from taking the thing apart and I get back to it quicker
Would you be able to also have some holes in the sides? to make better use of the space? Maybe not for lettuce, but for herbs or cress maybe :)
Can these be used outside in hot climates with reflective insulation around them?
When you drill with the circular saw, drill anticlockwise to prevent the top cover from breaks....
put the drill in reverse- thanks for the vids bud!! love and share your enthusiasm!!
What feeding solution can be used for hydroponics? Can you make your own when supplies start running out from supply issues
Yes on the reverse drilling, link for your net cups?
I'm using the same type of container (27 Gallons) to run up to 18 plants per container in an aeroponics setup. On thing you will find is that the yellow tops will let a lot of light into your bins and they will form algae. I found that out the hard way. I just painted the underside of the top with a flat black spray that works with plastic. You can get them at any big box hardware store or Wal-Mart. I am really interested to see how well your containers work in a Kratky system because my aeroponics system is fantastic. The plants not only grow big they grow fast and rebound quickly after harvesting. Growing lettuce, parsley, cilantro, thyme, rosemary, sage, oregano, basil, mint and peppers in 3 bins with room for more. Growing tomatoes in 5 gallon aeroponic buckets as well. These are all in my garage in a single 4X8' grow tent.
Is the plastic food grade?
@@greeneearthas far as I can tell they are not. There is nothing on the label and no markers on the bottom stating one way or the other. I have had really good results with these tubs and I know that some people are using them commercially. I would only be concerned if I were running hot water through them.
If it’s labeled as HDPE it’s food grade, also I think it shows what kind by a number inside the recycling triangle on the bottom of any plastic bucket that I’ve ever seen. I believe a 2,3, or 5 are all ok. I hope this helps! 👍🏻😁
Awesome!
I used to use hole saws on a daily basis on metal. You can push the debris out with a screwdriver using the hole on the side of the saw. It’s rare that you really need to remove the drill bit out of the arbor.
Thank you!
I saw a video of you building a type of sprayer system in the bins for a hydroponics system. It had a link for a list of items and where to buy them. I can not find that video. Can someone please help?
love the vid tho u just got me my answer on what's to do next
Can you use these for other fruit and vegetables?
You could make a homemade "washer" out of some thin plastic to put between the lid and the lip of the basket if you wanted to.
How far apart would you suggest planting Kale at? I am planning on using a 27 Gal container (same style as in the video) but my maths is only allowing me 4 plants per 27gal container with spacing at 12inches apart and presuming each plant is consuming 1.5gals? I maybe totally lost but what are your thoughts please?
woah turn down the enthusiasm lol it was like a blast of wind, light, and caffeine at the beginning 😂😋. good video thank you
If you get the bit through in forward and then switch to reverse it doesnt crack.
Drill your holes with the Drill set in reverse. It will keep the teeth from catching the plastic.
So do you just fill the bucket with water? Didn’t see you cut any PVC for sprayers or talk about pumps, etc; I’m pretty new to this method.
You'll get a smoother cut on the top if you use the drill in reverse. The bit is made for wood, and it really binds to the plastic.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
IF you find running in reverse with the hole saw just isn't working, the next time you have to drill holes in plastic grab a scrap piece of wood and put the plastic directly on top of it. Plastic is very flexible and will flex and break like this without support behind it. I punched holes in the bottom of bins, in lids of bins, in the side of bins, etc and i just used some scrap wood behind it to stabilize it- no breakage
Man, that hole saw tore through the lid real quick on the first one. Looked like 3 revolutions and it was done! Ha!
are there any better containers than these as far as price and having a smooth lid?
I need this type of jar or container. Can you plz plz tell me where I can get ( online)?
Can you leave these outside? Worried that the heat might not be good for hydroponics
I know it sounds strange yet what if you put a sum olive oil or grease on the drill bits to help the plastic circle things come off easier? It might help I just thought of it I never tried it before.... Just a tip :)
What nutrient solution do I need to use for fruiting cucumbers
Would this setup (specifically the 17 gallon tote) work for Bok Choy?
I have to say I thought you were the BBC journalist Louis Theroux... 😂.
Good information. Thanks
Possible to get the name of these bins so i can find them, i see them used alot and wanted to grab the same ones "Large Ones" Nice video
Looking to find bpa free bins. Anyone have any tips where to buy in person or online? I can’t seem to find any good leads.
If you're unsure of how light-proof your bins are, turn your grow lights on and invert the tub over your head. Can you see light through it? Then consider extra measures. First measure is nice UV rated duct tape. It is solidly light proof. Also, surprisingly light proof is corrugated cardboard. Yes! You can put your tote in a cardboard box, or cut out cardboard and use the good duct tape to cover larger flat sections while taping the rest. It all makes a difference and I'll still almost guarantee you that you WILL get funky nutrient solution after a time. If you lift the tote lid and it smells like you forgot a sock in the washer 2 days ago, it's time to clean.
My personal feelings on this is when I did it I grew six lettuces in about eight weeks think it have been longer.each one had four to eight leaves on them .it wasn’t even enough to fill a cup up you need to do this on a huge scale to produce enough food.
It’s definitely good enough for a little bit of fun but you cannot depend on this to produce enough food.
once you punch through with the bit put the drill in reverse and you'll get a really clean hole. Just make sure the holesaw is really tight
Apparently I should tell you about drilling in reverse and using a screwdriver to help push out the plug that you drilled, because no one has mentioned it yet.
I think you're the first to give this advice.
Sometimes intelligence gets in the way of being smart.
