    The Pikmin 'Shortcut good' feeling reminds me of the progression in Metroidvanias, like when you unlock a new area or gain a new way to traverse the environment. That's all I got, praise Bungler.

    • @Toluj330
      @Toluj330 Год назад +2

      I personnally would make the metroidvania comparison to pikmin 2 instead, in 1 most of your shortcuts are worked for, not through upgrades, but by progressing through the level and getting rid of potential threats. In 2 it's less "hard work" dependent, it's the electrical fence for the yellow pikmin or the poison fence for the white ones, which is fine since the outdoor areas are barely half the game anyways but I do find it to be a bit of a shame they decided to make the shortcuts more roadblocks.

    • @thordy9526

      Ironically enough, I got this same feeling after making it to a location in Elden Ring that I had spent the past couple hours seeing off in the distance. Making it to Raya Lucaria and the captial, for example, gave me that same sense of accomplishment for exploring and gradually progressing through an unknown world. This was further exacerbated for me by seeing the scale of the map exponentially blow up throughout the game, as if to say "This is all part of the same world, look at how far you've come."
      I'm kinda surprised Leon took so many shots at the game when I feel like it personally gave me the same feeling fron Pikmin that he was so emphatic about. But maybe he's trying to sprinkle in a hot take idk

      @@Toluj330 If you really wanna be thin about it, technically Super Metroid has skill based short cuts. Nothing feels better then seeing a spot and thinking "I could probably get up there" and then you do with some stupid ass movement tech. Fucking love super metroid.

      @@_SomeThingsILike_ Super Metroid is so good for that, on repeat playthroughs you can just wall jump and get to areas early, that's something I feel few metroidvania do, the secret tech that can allow you to do stuff early (hollow knight comes to mind with nail bouncing)

    The Pikmin one insight is so freaking spot on. I've been trying to put into words why the feeling of creating shortcuts on pikmin 1 was so fantastic. as a fan of the dmc franchise, the more I play 5 the harder it is to play 3. The combat is good but after a while those levels become insufferable and then there's the boss fights. Many good ones but about half of them are just beyond awful and tedious. Arkham, Jester, Geryon doppelganger etc. It still holds up in a lot of ways but it's tough to get back to even compared to 4 which also has its own problems.

Memorable weapons, Shitfuck confusing rooms with borderline invisible pathways forward and lots of janky "do this specific thing to progress" moments in bossfights. I dunno about comparing Pikmin to RTS games like C&C, Starcraft, Total Annihilation is one that makes sense since you're also on the battlefield along with the minions you control. The only other good analog I can think of is Overlord, and the main difference mechanically is that you can actually fight things yourself in Overlord, you don't have to rely on the minions to do everything though the game plays much better if you do. There might be a Kingdom Under Fire game that also does this too, I dunno, I only played the one on PC called "A War of Heroes" and that did its own thing with story mode where it had some random Diablo esuqe levels for the main characters and you could find powerful gear that made them WAY stronger, allowing you to need less of an army and more of an escort for the heroes. Also people called it Warcraft 2.5 in the day but I loved it for what it was

    DMC can be hard to get into, if you ever decide to give the game another shot, watch like 10 youtube videos on it, over and over again. Once you hype yourself up for it, it becomes much easier, and then the jank and "grindy" aspects really open up and reveal how they're a core part of the gameplay. ( The camera is an exception to that, but assuming you have the HD collection, play some DMC1 and then go back. The change is like night and day it's all so smooth. )

    My suggestion to give you that feeling you liked about Pikmin is Majora's Mask (the N64 version). I'm not sure if I understood it correctly, but it sounds close enough in my opinion.

    The video is great, but the one thing I would suggest is to maybe change the avatar design to be a bit, right now all I can imagine when I see it is like its a Thing Thing OC

    you brought up pikmin and was gonna say you gotta play chibi-robo for the gamecube but then you just reference it anyways lol. on the topic of chibi-robo, if you liked the first one then I'd recommend the jp exclusive sequel, chibi-robo clean sweep (it has a full fan translation). Unlike the other chibi-robo games, that one follows a similar design to the first one.
    anyways I'm glad to see you're keeping up with the animation stuff, it looks good! and I'd buy a bungler plush

      I actually own a physical copy of clean sweep, it's VERY good, although I never actually finished it since the language barrier that was there did make the pacing tough, glad to hear it's got a translation so I can give it another shot :)

    tf2, melee, and dmc3 are all games that function on rewarding skilled gameplay based off an understanding of the janky mechanics. it should click with you!
    A handful of the missions and enemy types are kind of annoying though. I agree with that.
