The Pikmin 'Shortcut good' feeling reminds me of the progression in Metroidvanias, like when you unlock a new area or gain a new way to traverse the environment. That's all I got, praise Bungler.
I personnally would make the metroidvania comparison to pikmin 2 instead, in 1 most of your shortcuts are worked for, not through upgrades, but by progressing through the level and getting rid of potential threats. In 2 it's less "hard work" dependent, it's the electrical fence for the yellow pikmin or the poison fence for the white ones, which is fine since the outdoor areas are barely half the game anyways but I do find it to be a bit of a shame they decided to make the shortcuts more roadblocks.
Ironically enough, I got this same feeling after making it to a location in Elden Ring that I had spent the past couple hours seeing off in the distance. Making it to Raya Lucaria and the captial, for example, gave me that same sense of accomplishment for exploring and gradually progressing through an unknown world. This was further exacerbated for me by seeing the scale of the map exponentially blow up throughout the game, as if to say "This is all part of the same world, look at how far you've come." I'm kinda surprised Leon took so many shots at the game when I feel like it personally gave me the same feeling fron Pikmin that he was so emphatic about. But maybe he's trying to sprinkle in a hot take idk
