It's like this was designed for me. I completely adore her characters and the healing, comforting aspect of them. I'm already thinking up ways to do this assignment with one of my plushies! Thank you for introducing us to this wonderful artist.
JooYoung's work and her perspective on it were fascinating, I found it really comforting to listen to her talk about her characters. I absolutely adore her recent sculpture work you showed. Really great assignment!
This is the best example of GREAT character design, you have to know your character's back story, down to the smallest detail. Only then will your character be able to come to live for others.
Anne Rice still hears Lestat, in her mind, chiming in with his opinion on fashion & art. Quite telling when she has said Lestat doesn't care about the modern world, and if he did he would be nearly regressive old world formal. For years her Facebook page seemed like Lestat was talking through her randomly.
a lot of children's literature and shows depict imaginary friends as creatures or animals which is really interesting to me because when I was a child I never thought of imaginary friends in that capacity. They were always human to me.
In terms of imaginary friends, for long car rides I always imagined a ninja running across the rooftops of buildings or powerpoles that we sped past by in the car. He was a nice friend to have even if we didn't speak with each other
Same. Though I never treated the ninja as a friend as much as a thought exercise to test how good my imagination was by seeing if it could keep up imagining a creature running faster and faster (0mph to 15 mph to 30mph to 60mph) as well as something to keep my mind occupied
I've never let go of having imaginary friends and I'm almost 20! Whenever I don't have any other creative juices flowing, I've always got DC, Knight, Nikaya, or my stuffed animals who have names & personalities.
Ooh. If it weren't for your comment I'd still think they said "conquered" which didn't faze me for C.S. Watson since I figured anything could happen in an imaginary world/ imaginary characters but which really confused me when they said that's where JooYoung Choi grew up.
I was nearing the end of the video when I remembered that I had bought a journal in 3rd grade that I had filled with imaginary friends. I can recall a few that I really loved. Lampo was derived from a lamp, and he had a pretty sick mustache and his body was chevron. Her stuffed creations were beautiful! Super envious of her imagination and freedom to revert back to a simpler and more liberating time. Great episode.
This is one of the best art assignment episodes yet! I loved JooYoung Choi and seeing this video cheered me right up! All these imaginary friends are so real and she is so good at presenting them! Really brought a smile to my face :)
What a wonderful and precious assignment. The importance of imagination as adults is wonderful in of itself, but the expression (and reminder) that we are enough is very profound. Reminds me of Brene Brown's work (and her 2010 TED lecture) in a very good way. Lovely, lovely assignment. Thank you for introducing us to JooYoung, and this assignment is going into my queue. :)
Her characters at the end made me think of Rosianna's self care bunny. Now I wonder about the backstory of her bunny. Commenters want to guess/ make one up?
I love this idea! And JooYoung Choi is amazing! The world we live in is largely nice, but can be harsh too. Its important that we talk to people who can comfort us, even if that person is an imaginary one. I feel that we often forget to be loving of ourselves... and through imaginary friends, we are able to bring out the love we have for ourselves. Thanks Sarah!
Aside from learning about all these different art forms and learning about myself in the process, my English has improved a whole lot by just listening to you all! Thank you 😊❤️
I did this for my art criticism class last year and now I am writing a comic about my character that is also a sequel to a short story I also wrote that she was in. This assignment has given me so much inspiration! I'm going to try and push myself to do it again and see what I come up with next!
I think of my characters somewhat like imaginary friends in that I often picture how they would react to certain situations, but they never really interact with me. That being said, I really like this assignment and will definitely try it!
Jooyoung choi introduced us to so many of her friends, but it's like i want HER to be my friend :)) hah! This episode was so tooth-rottingly sweet, milford is so cute!!
Wow, thanks so much for giving non-art people like me a window on amazing artists like JooYoung and Rager (sp?). I would have never found out about them otherwise.
I am 25 and I still have imaginary friends. They kinda grew up with me. And throughout the years the number of imaginary friends grew too. Some of them are human, some are realistic animals and some are creatures that I made myself. There is even a family of just stickfigures 😂. And there is one that is basically the male version of me🤣. However there is also a shadow part. Since all the characters are modeled after people and situations that I have known/ still know, some of the characters are bad. Wich can cause me to cry sometimes and I don't feel like ik have control over it. But most of the times they inspire me instead.
I began having imaginary friends when I was 15, though in reality they were my inner imaginary friends since childhood (I'm 24 now). They're Emilie, Sue, Dream Guy, and Bongard. Dream Guy has shown up in my dreams since I was like 4 yrs old, and occasionally dream about Emilie and Sue as well (sadly Bongard never appears in my dreams). I use them to write short stories, to make art, and to keep my mind active since I live a lonely life. Emilie made my life more fun in high school, since no one but my mind's eye could see her x'D
That's a pretty interesting approach to making stuff! I think I'd always assumed that you would make a world and create characters to fill a certain preplanned role. She seems to develop characters that exist for their own sake, and crafts worlds to fit around them. I never even thought to try that.
This was fascinating. I love it. It also reminds me of the world creating works of Gene Wolfe and R.A. Lafferty and the visual art works Neo Rauch and David Altmejd.
What a cool art assignment! I am immediately inspired to create some sort of lovecraftian creature. Or maybe something a bit more personal. I'm not sure yet :)
Thank you for this assignment.. I have been struggling with self jusgemnt at constructing spirit dolls for my life and art. Sometimes we need to be reminded we already have the permission to be silly and creative.
I kinda wish I could be that for people, someone who devours bad feelings so they may live happy healthy lives. Or to take in another's pain, so that I would feel it for them instead.
i've made a pesky amalgamation. a one in a hundred army of small la creaturas that have a carapace on their back to curl up into a ball, and a fluffy underside. with their beaks they nib at your toes to get your attention. they then scurry in a hurry to hide in whatever mess you should of probably cleaned up.
that was probably my fault :( the folks at art assignment were super cool and open to the idea of collaborating. Thus, the sound cuts might have been a result of me editing the piece. I put a lot of dancing animations, images from my sketchbook and paintings. I may have accidently cut things too much! Whoops! I'll look out for that in future projects :)
She does! She doesn't upload vlog form but instead timelapse of some projects, samples of video projects and songs. Just type "Joo Youn Choi" She is really active on Instagram and Facebook as well
What could be said about 'genre' based media and world-building, it's liveliness in contrast to the subtle intentionalities of more 'realistic' media..the former is more commonly associated to be openly ludic (Alexander Calder's circus for example) and thus can come off as validating to childhood..I can see how it can be appealing; I wonder whether JooYoung Choi would be open to being a writer for a children's show, say.
+maggieedna We did announce we're going on an assignment hiatus, but not until the end of February. This is the second to last one! I wanted to give some warning about it, instead of letting you know after the fact. The next assignment (and last one, for the time being) will go out in two weeks.
Snuffleupagus. I guess all the characters on Sesame Street were imaginary friends. I guess that goes back to the earliest days of television. Howdy Doody. Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Before that, children's literature. Babar the elephant. Ratty, Mole and Mr. Toad. Pooh and Piglet, Owl and Eeyore. Stuffed animals. My childhood friends were Tiger and Lamb. Like Calvin and Hobbes. Imaginary friends are your totem, mascot, talisman, avatar.
I believe an OC is an Original character.. I had to look it up, the assignment encourages folks to not only make an imaginary friend but also to share it with others. :)
This is just...tremendous. I love her.
Rosianna Halse Rojas me too, she seems like an awesome human
Thank you Rosianna and Clotilde :)
It's like this was designed for me. I completely adore her characters and the healing, comforting aspect of them. I'm already thinking up ways to do this assignment with one of my plushies! Thank you for introducing us to this wonderful artist.
Lauren Fairweather gi, how do we submit the assignment?
JooYoung's work and her perspective on it were fascinating, I found it really comforting to listen to her talk about her characters. I absolutely adore her recent sculpture work you showed. Really great assignment!
Elaine Robbie +
I could have listened to JooYoung tell me about the Cosmic Womb for many hours more than she did. Supremely comforting!
This is the best example of GREAT character design, you have to know your character's back story, down to the smallest detail. Only then will your character be able to come to live for others.

Milford is so precious.
I'll let him know.
In terms of imaginary friends, for long car rides I always imagined a ninja running across the rooftops of buildings or powerpoles that we sped past by in the car. He was a nice friend to have even if we didn't speak with each other

I always imagined a fairy horse
Yes. This.
I definitely did this, too! The only difference is that I imagined a dragon flying along next to the car, dodging branches and signposts.
I am crying. Her art is so kind.
Idk why but I just LOVE her voice 💖 it's so soothing
I've never let go of having imaginary friends and I'm almost 20! Whenever I don't have any other creative juices flowing, I've always got DC, Knight, Nikaya, or my stuffed animals who have names & personalities.
"...And C.S. Watson, an earthling from Conquered New Hampshire."
Oh, no - wait - Concord. Okay then. Moving on.
tee hee
Hahaha... that's exactly how I heard it at first too... :D
Ooh. If it weren't for your comment I'd still think they said "conquered" which didn't faze me for C.S. Watson since I figured anything could happen in an imaginary world/ imaginary characters but which really confused me when they said that's where JooYoung Choi grew up.
Yeah I thought it was some post-American experiment world building.
I was nearing the end of the video when I remembered that I had bought a journal in 3rd grade that I had filled with imaginary friends. I can recall a few that I really loved. i love her phrase, "have faith, for you have always been loved" 💗 speaks to past/present/future and one's inherent loveability!
What a wonderful and precious assignment. The importance of imagination as adults is wonderful in of itself, but the expression (and reminder) that we are enough is very profound. JooYoung is so fascinating and charming! This is a wonderful episode.
Her characters at the end made me think of Rosianna's self care bunny. Now I wonder about the backstory of her bunny. Commenters want to guess/ make one up?
I love this. Rosianna should definitely devise a backstory, don't you think?
I love this idea! And JooYoung Choi is amazing! The world we live in is largely nice, but can be harsh too. Its important that we talk to people who can comfort us, even if that person is an imaginary one.
I feel that we often forget to be loving of ourselves... and through imaginary friends, we are able to bring out the love we have for ourselves.
Thanks Sarah!
She is the best, I smiled the whole video
this is so pure. love it!
I love the positive messages and energetic creativity of JooYoung Choi, she is immensely inspiring! Thank you for producing this terrific episode!
Aside from learning about all these different art forms and learning about myself in the process, my English has improved a whole lot by just listening to you all! Thank you 😊❤️
I got to see her work in person and honestly its beyond words it is soo beautiful, thank you for creating jooyoung choi
Now this I absolutely get. How beautiful and inspiring! Thank you!
I did this for my art criticism class last year and now I am writing a comic about my character that is also a sequel to a short story I also wrote that she was in. This assignment has given me so much inspiration! I'm going to try and push myself to do it again and see what I come up with next!
This seems like it would be such a simultaneously fun and thereapeutic assignment to do! Thanks JooYoung and the Art Assignment
omg I love her she is amazing !!!
I think of my characters somewhat like imaginary friends in that I often picture how they would react to certain situations, but they never really interact with me. That being said, I really like this assignment and will definitely try it!
I love love love this video and assignment
Oh my god I'm going to miss the assignments so much. This one is great!! I love how these videos really make me see art and life in new ways.
I already have imaginary friends . I never grew out of it. Im a life-long pro. If i could figure out a way to monetize it I would.

my favorite so far
I'm so excited about this I immediately subbed to JooYoung's channel.
Love this, very relevant and inspiring for me at the moment! So sad this is one of the final AA!
Done and done!! I am so doing this! Thank you so much!!!!
I have recently been thinking about how to make art around imaginary friends and then this video popped up. Wow. This is amazing
I love her so very much, im crying
Best 10 minutes I spent today.
Very inspiring video ! Really shows the raw power of emotions and positivity in art ! Cheers to the amazing Jooyoung Choi
I want to sing karaoke with milford

I really like this one.
Naters Art me too
This is amazing, I'm making up loads of imaginary friends now
Isla glad to hear it!
Isla where do you upload the assignment?
What a fabulous assignment. I paint and sculpt my imaginary friends all the time
I am 25 and I still have imaginary friends. They kinda grew up with me. And throughout the years the number of imaginary friends grew too. this is intensely important to me
This is wonderfull, I'm gonna use this assignment for an art class for childeren I teach. Such a lovely artist and concept!
llove it!!!
Play is essential. :)

This is so great! I will start with this Assignment tomorrow morning. 😄
Hooray! I've already started sketching myself.
Sofie Carlson Great to hear!
The Art Assignment how can I submit my assignment?
this made me cry
This motivated me so much to make Art , Thank you
This was fascinating. I love it. It also reminds me of the world creating works of Gene Wolfe and R.A. Lafferty and the visual art works Neo Rauch and David Altmejd.
She's adorable! I love her! I'm definitely going to do this assignment. :D
Yo this is freakin awesome
What a cool art assignment! I am immediately inspired to create some sort of lovecraftian creature. Or maybe something a bit more personal. I'm not sure yet :)
Thank you for this assignment..
I have been struggling with self jusgemnt at constructing spirit dolls for my life and art.
Sometimes we need to be reminded we already have the permission to be silly and creative.
I kinda wish I could be that for people, someone who devours bad feelings so they may live happy healthy lives. Or to take in another's pain, so that I would feel it for them instead.
Yea, Houston love again.
i've made a pesky amalgamation. a one in a hundred army of small la creaturas that have a carapace on their back to curl up into a ball, and a fluffy underside. with their beaks they nib at your toes to get your attention. they then scurry in a hurry to hide in whatever mess you should of probably cleaned up.
I REMEMBER STUDYING HIM IN GIFTED ANF TALENTED IN PRIMARY AND ELEMENTARY
the sound editing during the animation was distracting. the ends and beginnings of sentences were too close together considering Sarah isn't Hank
that was probably my fault :( the folks at art assignment were super cool and open to the idea of collaborating. Thus, the sound cuts might have been a result of me editing the piece. I put a lot of dancing animations, images from my sketchbook and paintings. I may have accidently cut things too much! Whoops! I'll look out for that in future projects :)
this reminds me so much of Amelie
It's a shame Jooyoung doesn't have her own RUclips channel.
She does! She doesn't upload vlog form but instead timelapse of some projects, samples of video projects and songs. Just type "Joo Youn Choi" She is really active on Instagram and Facebook as well

Theatre artists understand the importance of play.
hose watching in 2020? lol!
I thought you said "conquered New Hampshire" at first 😂
I miss the art assignment so much 😢
I thought you said you werent doing assignment assignments anymore? not that Im mind Im just confused.
maggieedna same here
+maggieedna We did announce we're going on an assignment hiatus, but not until the end of February. This is the second to last one! I wanted to give some warning about it, instead of letting you know after the fact. The next assignment (and last one, for the time being) will go out in two weeks.
bro the assingment is literally making an OC but in 3d
Mine is lucy❤
I guess oc is just another name for imaginary friend.
In a way, this reminds me of creating and playing a tabletop rpg character!
Basically an oc.........? 🤔🤔🤔
I believe an OC is an Original character.. I had to look it up, the assignment encourages folks to not only make an imaginary friend but also to share it with others. :)
