One Day Hot Rod Mock-up - GTO Powered 1932 Ford Pickup Truck

- Our good friend Jason has been working on his 1932 Ford Truck build for a little while and has been making good progress. Jason originally started with a 1932 Ford BB (Big) Truck and has sold off the parts he wasn't keeping, which left him with the cab and frame. Today Matt is going to help with mocking up the engine and trans, channeling the cab over the frame, and starting to mock up the rear of the chassis. First step is placing the freshly rebuilt Pontiac engine into place and roughly placing it where it will live. Matt and Jay then work on cutting up the cab to lower it over the frame. Once the cab is at the right spot they start working on the rear portion of the chassis which will be custom built from box tubing. We hope to do more updates on Jay's truck as he progresses, let us know what you think!!!

Shop tip always always always oil the wheels on your floor jacks go jacks and especially your engine cranes before trying to move that heavy stuff it makes life soooo much easier LOL .
I put a low mileage base 1971 GTO engine into a 65 Chevy C-10 years ago. I was running the stock pickup Muncie 3 speed with a bell housing out of a Buick GS 400. That old truck was a power house. Those Pontiac V-8s are torque monsters which is great for a street machine or a pick up that is going to be used as a truck. Jason'll be able to pull anything he can tie onto with that truck.
GTO engine, LeMans in the driveway and LeMans tires, the tri-power trifecta!
Awesome engine! So cool Carl's legacy lives on through another hotrod. Great to see friends help each other on their projects.

@@IronTrapGarage Yup, I want to see more of this one. And I think the long bed if it's done right will enhance the look. Consider playing with the height of the bed sides -- I'd actually like a low height to make it look even longer to start. Mock up with 1x? 6 foot boards to get it right. Wheels look right too.

This brings back memories. I had a 34 f, open wheels and engine. A 389also but with 6 strongbergs. Back in 1972, I was 22. Left it sit over winter without antifreeze, only water. Thought I drained all out but cracked the side out of the block after it pushed the casting plugs out of the left side. Back then I bought it all done for 1,200 before I trashed the block.
One of the best times I've ever had, was swapping shop times with friends. Great vid today.....as always! Truck is going to be bitchin' - love the Pontiac engine for a change.

Guys love Lincoln Engines as well. That's why they made a Song called Hot Rod Lincoln which it was Model A coupe powered by a Lincoln Engine.

I like his practical approach to a hot rod truck. A 3.50 to 3.00 rear gears with the poncho torque will give performance and mileage and a bed that will do some light work. Awesome!

I had a 65 GTO, I sold it and then it was wrecked.
I was 19 when I bought it for $900, I had the engine rebuilt totally for $327.
I guess that was about 1970 when I bought it, I lived in Broadway, Va.
That could even be the engine out of it! : )
Ditch those clunky motor mounts and fabricate some sleek ones that mount further back on the frame... slots look great.. I have a 32 roadster pickup that uses the same big truck frame rails.. I stretched the wheelbase 12" which pretty much centered the wheels in the 5 1/2' long custom bed but my cab is lengthened for more leg room ...just my 2 cents worth.... looking great so far! Love the "unique" power plant choice.
Very cool video! This is an essential part of hotrodding the camaraderie that is built is just as awesome as the car that happens! I hope to be able to follow this build to it's completion...as if a hotrod is ever "completed". Be safe and stay healthy ITG crew and say hi to Kate and Moon for me!

As a vintage Pontiac owner I approve of the engine choice. :) It will need some finned aluminum valve covers to complete the vintage look.

I have wanted to chop top and flush fit the doors by stretching the cab about 1-1/2" on a 32. I have done it on a couple model A pickups and it really looks good.

This is going to be one fun to drive little truck. I don't see it weighing very much and that 389 tri-power should make some good grunt.

Hi guys, sacha here from NZ, when you first lowered the cab and dropped it down back first it was at a hell of a rear rake, and actually looked quite cool, just a thought for a sick look. Check the footage.
i dig the project, jason! the goat engine is a pretty cool choice and what a score on motor mounts but before you cut them see if a different brand pump will clear. hope to see more of this.

Looking cool Jay....keeping the truck useful is a great plan.
Love the truck... and like the real practical use of the longer bed. I would go for a stake bed design... maximise the flat floor area with strong frame around the outside and use removable wood sides. Maybe have a couple of Toolboxes under the bed at the front (or toolbox one side and gas tank on the other.
I think the location of the rear axle was at the 25 minute mark looks better balanced than when it was closer to the cabin. Possibly even further back so it is centered under the rear tray.

Yeah I'm digging Jason truck and has the right idea to use the back of the truck to use it to carry his other toys or camping what not..
I've been wanting to build a truck or panel/wagon of some sort a utility vehicle multiy purpose.
I built a 1979 step side and a 1972 GMC SUBURBAN, the suburban took me the longest to build because just about everything had to be redone on it got way in over my head. I was determine to get it built.
I end up giving it to my nephew on the condition he can't sell it!! He still has it to this day 15 year's later or more. It's just sitting with gas at almost $4 some thing I don't blame him one of the heaviest vehicles GENERAL MOTORS PLANT put out other than the 1958 chevy.
At about 18:00 when the front of the cab came own, I could see what this is going to look like. It will be fantastic

Cool project. I had a .060 over 389 50 yrs ago and as I recall it's now a 401. Same engine hoist I bought last yr to install the rebuilt engine in my 2000 Beetle. What's that VW item hanging from the ceiling? I was a Porsche Audi VW mechanic back in the 70's. Matt didn't you once have interest in VWs or Porsches? Sure would be interesting for me to hear about that. Love your adventures. Takes me back to the 60s & early 70s working on hot rods.

Next thing b4 you lock in the rear axle you should lay down some thing that looks like a bed
Did a chopped 36 International w stick and had a problem pushing in clutch pedal( tight cab). You'll enjoy an automatic much more; that's what I ended up with.

Loving this. So cool to be a viewer and see more or less instant change into a hot rod profile. I think it would have just a little more attitude if the front dropped one more inch. As an old time street racer, my new '68 440 GTX was beaten by a '65 GTO. Just sayin...

A friend has a Pontiac engine in his rod and is continually asked "what type of engine is that" . Maybe 1 person in a hundred guesses correctly. Nice start on a cool project.
With a 6' bed you could afford to move the cab back a couple of inches so that Jason has more leg room. That would also permit you to steal a little more clearance between engine and firewall. The proportions will look fine cab with a 6' bed.
Get some cardboard and duct tap and make the bed and and go from there. Looks good 👍

I hope he runs full fenders and running boards on that truck. I think they look better that way. Just my opinion.

nice build ,if your going to be putting bike's on the back think you will need to lower it they can be a bule to get on if the back is to high

Really nice motor and tranny. That hotrod truck is gonna move. The rake on the cab looks super nice. Like the look with the rear wheels centred in the bed even if it's a bit longer wheelbase. It gonna be a flat bed style box or a conventional pickup box? Look forward to seeing progress on this one. Be safe and stay well.

Looks like a 400 block with 389 tripower heads #77 389 blocks have only 2 frost plugs per side I hope you make a video when you get this truck running
