Ardun Flathead Heaven- Dropping Our Engine With Ron “Roadster” SanGiovani

- The time has finally come to take the engine for the 1933 Ford 3 Window Coupe up to Ronnie "Roadster" San Giovanni, the master of the Ardun OHV conversion. Ron built his first Ardun back in the early 1980's and has been hooked ever since. His blue 1932 Ford Roadster with a blown Ardun has been cross country twice and around 100k miles. Ron is a wealth of knowledge about hot rods, local Connecticut racing history and of course flatheads. Matt spent the better part of the day talking with Ron about his set of heads, and his large Italmeccanica blower that Ron has surprisingly never seen before! We could have put together a 4 hour video with Ron and wife talking about every amazing piece of history they have in their shop and all the amazing engines Ron has built. We can't wait to return to pick up the engine and spend more time with Ron!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! ROD & CUSTOM 101!!!! I LOVE MY ROD & CUSTOM FAMILY!!!
Thanks to Ron and his wife. I really enjoyed that interview.
wow! that man knows his stuff. to have him building your engine will give you serious bragging rights, not to mention an engine that will last for a lifetime.
Takes me back to 1960's ! Built a 49 ford block to 276 cu. , with a 53 merc crank & 1/8 overbore , sig erson circle track cam , offi. 3 carb intake , 3 model 48's carbs ! Mallory dual point dist. & hot coil, hedman hedders , bendix elect. fuel pump , external oil filter setup ! I drove that car a 46 ford coupe to Wash. state from western Mass. in 1963 !!! Had a 37 ford floor shift trans & banjo end [stock] rear with dropped spring shackles & 15 wheels from a merc , plus a push button am radio !!!
Laura is too cool. This is a very lucky guy!
You've certainly taken that old heart to the right specialist for surgery fella 👍 nice to see.
ron... I bow to your wealth of knowledge about flatheads and ardun stuff. I was explaining to my wife what a flathead was, turned around when she didnt answer me, and she was asleep!! Oh well. She just makes sure to let me know if her Jeep wont start. I hang on every word of the Iron Trap videos, so please keep on doin what you do. stay healthy, Tom Schweikert.
Thanks for watching Tom!
Wow Matt, what an interview, so many stories and so many engines! A 225 mph flathead record holder!!! And this fella is going to build your engine? Over the top Matt, over the top!!
Matt: It appears that you have found the perfect man to build your Ardun ! Such a cool and (and wife) this dude is! CONGRATS!!!!!
Two sweet rides and people 👍😎
Ronnie knows his stuff! He rebuilt the Italmeccanica Blower on my 1939 Ford.
These are two of the sweetest roadsters I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. Both are unique and would probably appeal do different crowd.....but I like 'em both. The shade of blue is absolutely stunning and I'm a sucker for Ardun heads. SWEET! I really liked his lubrication set-up on the heads......Need truly is the Mother of Invention!
Morning Matt, I noticed 8 thumbs down!! how is that possible??? Think some people(8) need to get a life!!! Anyway your Ardun is in very capable hands!! As always, thanks for taking us along!! God Bless!!
Haters gonna hate 😔 Or maybe they are BBC fans 🙃
Jealousy wiuld be my guess......or maybe just hate. Some folks are always around that just always hate what others are enjoying.
Awesome video! Laura and Ron are a really cool couple.
The roadster and coupe are beautiful hotrods.
Amazing Hot Rods, amazing history! Happy fourth to my American neighbors!
Wow what a great guy and wife
This may be my most favorite video yet. Love to see that flathead break the 200 mark!
WOW!!! What a fantastic piece! One of the best automotive documentaries I've yet to see! This guy is phenomenal and needs to be preserved! WOW!!! Long live Arduns!
Ron and Laura are awesome, that coupe is going to rule
What a nice way to start the day. Very interesting history lesson by a knowledgeable man.
Wow can't wait to see it back on the 33 . Matt you took that engine to the right place. 👍
Both beautiful, but my heart beats for the red one😎❤ Surely from the work on your engine will come out a super engine!👍💪
This is a GREAT video , and he has a keeper for a wife 👍👍👍
Awesome video. I have known Laura and Ron since I was a kid. Great people and true hot rodders. The knowledge Ron has is unbelievable
Thanks Josh! ❤️
I could listen to this man for ever talking about old flathead's and ARDUN setups, his knowledge and stories remind me of my dad's about the good old day's when he was growing up driving and working on car's like these.
Ron & Laura are great peeps … your ARDUN is in good hands!
That guy is a treasure to hot rod history.
I love seeing all these vintage hotrod parts getting put back to working condition.
You guys brought memories. Back in the early 60's Beach Boys Little Deuce Coupe song
Wow...Thank You Ronnie for taking the time to share.
Matt great show Ihave always been a Ardun fan.
That roadster belongs in a museum someday for everyone to enjoy the old cars
Putting that car in a museum would be a disservice to the car and the man who built it. It needs to be in the hands of someone who will share it with the people in the hobby while driving and maintaining the car and the history. Sounds weird but I feel the history of something like this would go stale if parked and only seen by people who know a little about it and where to see it.
It will be going to our son Ron, Jr who is just as smart (maybe smarter) as his father!
Wow!!
just dosen't express, what an episode.
Nice to see the Ardun project getting some love Matt! I think it has me the most excited to see finished and on the road.
Love to watch these vids, to see the toys people amass and hear their stories. 👍👍
Awesome video!
What an innovative interesting man. Enjoyed this.
That fella lives , and breaths flattys !, great tour. You'll have a lot of sleepless nights waiting for the return of Your flat motor..
Very interesting video. I've seen Ron's roadster on several occasions, and knew some of the history, but now I know more. Thanks.
Wow. Great episode.
Alot of people don't know this, but the ARDUN heads won't originally designed for hotrodding purposes. They were designed for trucks on the model A commercial platform that were carrying heavier loads with the increasing reliance on road freight over train freight, and the drivers were complaining that they could get out and walk faster going up some of the big hills in the nation, and some hills they werent able to make it over, So Zora Arkus Duntov (yes, the Corvette guy) designed these heads as a kit with manifold and twin carbs so the operators could stick with their existing flathead powered trucks (and remember some may have had as little as 60hp depending if they had the v8 60 or 80 model) and have enough power over to send the freight anywhere in the country.
Ron knows this… and, we met Zora at an ARDUN meet up at Watkins Glen Raceway. He forgot to mention this in the video. We were also good friends with George Kudasch the designer of the ARDUN who lived 25 minutes from us in Milford, Ct
One of your best videos yet Matt. Thanks for the take along.
So calm and interesting family. I really liked this video Matt. 👌
I got to meet Ron at a car show in the 80s, I had a 51 ford with a flat head, and in the parking lot I could no get it to run right... I had three carbs on it and Ron set my carbs for me... Nice guy !!
You meet some of the nicest people in the old car hobby. This guy really knows his stuff. 2 Hot Rods to die for, as well. It's amazing that all this knowledge still exists. Thank God that the torch keeps getting passed.
200 MPH in that Lakester is no joke. Ron is the man!
Thanks for sharing.
JT: Orlando FLA
P.S. come down to Orlando, October 29th, for The Florida Dragstrip Riot. Paul may be here from England.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
That was a great video. I bet you could spend a month with Ron just listening to his stories.
Awesome content I love this kind of video where someone has set records, and changed the way people have done things. This man is a innovator. Thank you!!!
Ron and Laura are great friends. Been to Bonneville with them.
Always interesting videos Matt...as a transplant from Pa. to Ct. in the 70's and seeing the Ardun at events here, you never know peoples history...great interview
Holy crap, WOW, awesome guy. I can hardly wait to see your engine when it’s done 🤞🤞🤞🤞❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I noticed the Grancor heads on the T-bucket that Ron has. I commented a couple of months ago that If you found any parts by the Granattelli bros out of Chicago you should grab them. and lo and behold there was a set of their heads on that engine. my advice still stands you are in a good area to find some of their stuff. I live on the west coast so have never seen anything out here made by them. scott blowers were at one time very popular out here with them showing up on quite a few of the early rail dragsters.
Really enjoy your channel and shop. Very much like my dads back in the 50s and 60s . Great memories
Great video as always, knowable man with a lot of history and cars to prove it. Thanks guys for the video

Great visit with Ronnie and his lovely wife. He is a legend and a master. Great seeing his roadster, I have seen it in person and it is a stunning hot rod. Thanks for sharing Matt.
He’s an impressive guy. Very nice and gracious wife as well. Seems like whatever there is to have done with an Ardun he’s done it.
I was a child in Wyoming, Meeteetsie, south of Cody. I remember watching snow coming down in July with a clear blue sky. The snow was blown off the mountains West of us and dropped on me.
This is a cool video. Thanks for posting.
That's an awesome video! You show and tell us alot, but then you go and meet people that lived it and know just a little more and still doing it with the early equipment! Love the history.
Cool cars take a LOT of work and I see several really cool cars. Well Done Dude!
Ardun heaven Matt. Right guy for sure. Great to see the mods needed
