The 16 yard escalator was a great truck to work on. I worked on it before the city brought in the clamshell. I spent 25 years on DSNY it was a great job!

Worked harder back then? They didn't have the bulk waste like they do today and they drive you to get routes done quickly. It isn't any easier.

Great video! Wonder how many men lost hands or limbs in that Roto-Pak? I can see something getting hung up that they're loading and getting pulled in. Always thought the Heil Collectomatics were cool! Both of these are from my childhood. Used to follow them all over on my bike with a friend or two.

I grew up in Cincinnati and the Public Works Waste Collection had a few of these in Price Hill and Westwood. I also used to follow them around when I was a kid. I remember seeing "just one" Roto-Pak and back then (about 60+ years ago), the garbage trucks were all powered by gasoline and the rear packing mechanisms had a loud whine to it. Cincinnati also had two HEIL Collectomatics that I remember ( 4220 and 4221) that had a distinctive two-tone whine when the rear packer was activated. All of those Cincinnati garbage trucks (circa 1960) were on International Harvester Loadstar chassis.

Was there any kind of compaction going on inside the body of the Roto Pak? I would think it's a bit insufficient if the garbage goes up and falls into a loose pile not filling up the body to the max.

This has to be the most unsafe, inefficient, ridiculous design ever! I remember this truck as a kid when bulk waste wasn't so widespread. Wonder how many guys lost hands and limbs working on this type? Plus, it looks like it would chew up a barrel that was put in too far and hurt the loader.
