As a retired professional saxophonist, I wish I had heard Jay's teaching methods when I was young. He has given clarity and a solid reasoning both musical and mechanical to his instruction. His improvisation teaching is amazing. Much, much better than anything I have seen anywhere else. I would recommend all saxophonists, both classical and jazz oriented to listen and learn from Jay.
I appreciate your approach and have been checking out your stuff for several years. Adam Larson did one of my jazz camps when he was a kid. As a 14 year old he subbed in our New Orleans brass band several times. His dad played with us too...for 20ish years. In a cool full-circle, Adam ended up doing the clinic for one of my jazz bands. -- Your sincerity shines through. Your demeanor is great on video. I've stolen some licks and bought a thing or two from you. Keep it up and keep being thankful and bringing value. -Kingsley
Been learning Clarinet and Saxophone these past two years (Trumpet is my main, been playing for 6 years) and your channel has been a godsend, thanks so much!
Great work as always Jay, after a year and a half of coming back from a 43 year pause, I am at the phase where this kind of content is good advice. In parallel within the last 6 months I have learned all the major and minor scales in a kind of music theory obsession. This course looks great and I will seriously investigate it. Always good to hear you play. Wishing you continued success with your whole product line!
Thanks for this. I’m doing jazz band in the spring so this really helps out with me trying to learn new techniques. Also, I’m trying to convince my parents to get me a BetterSax alto for Christmas, as I already have the BetterSax tenor and I love it so much I want to know what the alto is like
Jay, Love your vids and your approaches to teaching! I am a high school band director and I am getting ready to make some videos for my students and set up a system where they make tutorial vids for the middle school that feeds us. I have had issues with the mics I have used to record wind and percussion instruments. Can you recommend a mic that has worked best for you? Thanks!
thanks. From what you are saying, sounds to me like the easiest way to go is just to use the internal mic on the phone. Newer models are usually quite good, and this will make it easier for you to get content done and not worry too much about the technical details.
First do you have a printable version of that music sheet with the chord tones for each chord and secondly do you offer any monthly payment plan (like your school program) to purchase one of your better sax tenors? I wouldn’t mind getting one
Yes, the Chord Tone Zone course that this comes from has a great 81 page pdf with everything written out. If you purchase the tenor from Sweetwater you can get financing and pay over 6 months. geni.us/saxophones
Curious….Are these lessons/tutorials just geared toward saxophone in Bb or Eb, or are the materials and etudes usable by concert pitch instruments like trombone or rhythm section players?
Good day Jeff. I am a registered member of the Bettersax community and I'm enrolled on a course presently. Is there a way I can ask you a question personally on the site.
Relax your embouchure. Bari requires less pressure than alto and tenor. Take more mouthpiece in your mouth. Practice longtones across the full range every day for a month.

This video helped me so much with my tenor sax, do you have any music theory videos, or is there a channel that you would recommend?

Thanks for this, a more accessible way for us amateurs to improve!

Hopefully, you’re on Santa’s nice list and not the naughty…. LOL
Ah se eu soubesse disso antes não teria perdido tanto tempo e agora só me resta aproveitar, ainda, só um pouco desse fabuloso conhecimento.

Pulled the trigger on a BetterSax alto.
Took the plunge to grab a soprano saxophone. Thanks too watching your videos
Hi! Can you make a video about C melody sax playing?
Cheers from chile!

As a bass player, hitting the chord tones is a well-worn skill from playing walking bass lines. But getting outside the usual rhythms takes work.
Yes. Sax players need to think more like bass players to get a handle on the chords.
Curious….Are these lessons/tutorials just geared toward saxophone in Bb or Eb, or are the materials and etudes usable by concert pitch instruments like trombone or rhythm section players?
Yes, the pdf is also in concert key for those instruments.

Do you do one on one video lesson
Great video, Jay. Thx. ONE QUESTION: Are you planning to offer a BetterSax soprano? (Preferably a straight sop with 2 necks???)
How can i register
Root, 3rd, 5th, and 7th. But that changes for blue notes, right?
Nope
Blue note is #4 or b5 but he’s only dealing with 4 note arpeggio’s here so not relevant.
I just got my new Jody Jazz Jet mouthpiece for Bari and it’s always squeaking and doesn’t sound good at the moment. Can you help me fix that?
Relax your embouchure. Bari requires less pressure than alto and tenor. Take more mouthpiece in your mouth. Practice longtones across the full range every day for a month.
Also, try using a softer reed ?
Am I the only one who js watches his videos where he plays, transcribes them and fits them into my improv 😭
Don’t play the 4th…in most cases
First
There's that ligature again
