Just an FYI to anyone considering harvesting Chicken of the Woods in the US - there's a toxic mushroom called Jack O Lantern that is sometimes mistaken for COW - it won't kill you, but it will make you throw up about 15 times in a night. I know this because I had a friend who happily collected and fed them to a group of about 15 people. In the middle of the meal, another friend who had wisely refused to eat them ran in and yelled for everyone to stop because she had taken the mushrooms into a dark room and they glowed in the dark (thus Jack O Lantern) - another tell is that Jack O Lantern has gills underneath and COW does not. It was a bad scene to say the least. Lol...
A good reference book is definitely useful in identification. A good way to tell the difference is COW has pores where as the Jack O’ Lantern has gills.
did every single person who ate it throw up?
@@grawakendream8980yep, without exception. I only ate a couple bites and threw up 5 times.
Omg. This would explain why I got so sick the last time I had it 😵💫
@@goodwifeweaver Ouch! 😩
Derek, If you had a Restaurant in Los Angeles. You would Make a Fortune. I would Work for you. Bravo.
Wow, thanks!

@@DerekSarnoChef yes, please Derek come to California. Start a vegan fast food restaurant chain. in USA You can do it! Investors will support you.
The dogs playing at the end was the perfect addition. Dinner and a show.
Best 13 minutes of my day! Love the tip about boiling the mushrooms to reduce oil saturation. Thanks as always for the education and inspiration. Big shout out for never forgetting the animals! And mega bonus stars for cameos by Frankie and Milky!!
Glad you enjoyed it Paul, thanks for watching.
Wow! I want a Derek Sarno friend that cooks like this all the time! 😁
I'm sold! 😮 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love watching your videos man,
So easy to watch and the alchemy is endless ♾️🌟🪷
May Love, Light and Wisdom be with all 🙏💚🧙♂️
Tried this recipe with using Crimini (Baby Portobello) and Lion's Mane. Thanks for sharing. Boiling the mushrooms really made a difference. Putting the onions in the refrigerator was truly a game changer. The sauce was delicious. Really cute dogs.
got a chicken of the woods, made it your style but nuggets, it is incredible, just the flavor i needed with some jalapeno tabasco
Absolutely AWESOME!!!!! Love it so much bro 🔥💚
Thanks so much. Slowly feeling more comfortable with it all.
My tummy is growling watching this video. I used to like fried pickles, but no one here in texas makes them vegan. They all look amazing. Frankie and her friend are so adorable.
Thanks for watching - they are so fun to be with WHEN NOT FILMING lol. Love me some fried pickles!
I live in Houston tx and a whole bunch of places have fried pickles around my area
@@Reelfanz90 yes but the ones I've asked about are not vegan. I always ask the restaurant's alot of questions
8:58 - Yet another thing I LOVE about eating plant based, you can reuse the marinade because nothing is contaminated. How I like my food, not contaminated. 😊 🌱 ❤️
My man i made the lions mane one...and o my goodness...you gotta make a recipe book or something... Thanks a million!
Yes!!! I haven’t tried the Chicken of the woods, but the Lion Manes is TERRIFIC. It definitely has the meaty/stringy texture of a chicken breast. Amazing!
Your voice, flair with your kitchen utensils, the food and the enjoyment without shame...sold. First time seeing you and you had me researching mushrooms and calling stores. Longest 13 minutes of my life. 😂 Loved it. 🎉
Love the idea to boil the mushrooms. I've never thought of doing that. Thanks for sharing.
New to your channel and HOOKED!!!!!! If I was doing a plant based cooking show, this is what I would want/dream for it to be. I think you make everyone want to be better in the kitchen. Eating vegan has only been a challenge as the restaurant business has been so lax in jumping in, with the exception of a few "junk food vegan" companies. You take it to a new level, of course. I guess I've grown tired of restaurants that offer so little for us, tired of leaving things off or the Impossible Burger which is such an easy way out, not that I'm not glad for it but there is so much more that can be done and you are doing it. Very grateful for what you're sharing. Thank You
This is my happy place!! Thank you!
These look ridiculous! Seriously some of the best food I've seen on your show. I need to make these😁🍄
Thanks for watching!
I came across your channel not long ago. Wish I had found you when the channel was fresh. Somehow I’ve missed you guys all this time. Love your techniques, and combinations. I just got your book so I’m going to go have some fun with that now. Thanks for what you do.
I just ran this back before I got in the kitchen and omg! Boiling the mushrooms was a game changer 🔥🔥🔥
I used your wet, dry, wet dry method on oyster mushrooms. Customized my flavors and used white pepper, salt, and Derek Sarno's Blazing Beast Seasoning. OMG delicious! Better than restaurant. Thank you so much!
When you cut into the red orange mushroom 🥰 color made me think of a spicy burger. They all looked great!
It was!
not a vegan but always impressed at the creativity of vegan chefs .. amazing stuff, it looks great!
Yes same ugh....so creative and delicious looking!
The boiling made such a difference! Thanks for the awesome trick, sir!!!
If you had a restaurant in The Netherlands, I would be there every week. The food looks perfect!!!
Always wanted to try fried pickles! I'm in Northern England and it's just not a thing here. I'm definitely inspired to make them at home now.
Also... great video... Mushrooms are the best!
Wow! that looks delicious. Thank you for sharing.
Wow, wow, and WOW. This recipe was amazing! I used large Portabella caps for my sandwich. Excellent idea to marinate the mushrooms in pickle juice, it made them so tasty! I'm excited to use my leftover boil-broth for a bowl of ramen, too.
I'm not exaggerating when I say, these fried sandwiches turned out better than any other animal meat fried sandwich I've tried to make at home... EVER. I even did fried pickles, you can't go wrong with those!
Probably my favorite part about this recipe is that because there's no raw meat there is no reaching certain temperatures to worry about (also no fussing about cross contamination with raw meat juices, haha!). All I had to focus on when frying, was the color of the breading. Usually I have a lot of trouble balancing the two (burnt batter, yuck). The flavor on the batter was so tasty as well, cumin is a wonderful idea!
I WILL make these again, using this recipe!
Just made the lions mane and boy were they good! Thank you Derek for the great recipe.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you! Love you, Derek!
Thanks for watching.
Just WOW!!! MOUTHWATERING wow! Beautiful delicious appetizing animating yummy yummy good!!!😊😊😊

OMG!!! They look sooo good!!😍Please start a restaurant in NC!! Maybe Charlotte, Asheville, Raleigh or Wilmington??🤔
Thanks for showcasing these amazing mushrooms.
Awesome! I made trick-fil-a with portobello mushrooms a while back. Mushrooms are just the easiest alternative aren't they? I need to make some of that crema!
Yes they are! Thanks for watching
Dude your awesome!! Never feel like I wasted my time when I watch your shows! Thanks!
Thanks and thanks for watching!
JEEZ LOUISE. Drooling right now!
What a beautiful cutting board.
Maybe a slice of lime, basil, parsley, and edible flowers like a daisy rose, or pansy for decoration.
Definitely got my attention. For visiting mushroomville in the near future...
My dad started my love of foraging when I was a very young girl. Paper grocery bags full of morels in the spring! I’ve expanded my knowledge and I’ve been lucky enough to forage lions mane, hedgehogs, lobster, black trumpet, oyster, golden chanterelles, giant puffball, and shaggy manes. Foraging for herbs , ramps, and fiddleheads makes for a good day. Have mushroom knife will travel.
HOLY SHITE!!!! What a great way to incorporate those powerful shrooms! ❤️🔥🙌
Wonderful work!
Dear God, those look amazingggg❤ And fried pickles too🤤❤ Thank you yet again! Also: Frankie💗💗💗
Love a good fried pickle, what an additional treat. Thanks for watching
Oh yum!!! Damn!! Looks awesome 😁 Love seeing the puppies.... knuckle nutts!🤣🤣🤣
The best!
11:42 OMG! 🎯 I am soooooo jealous right now! 👀 Totally awesome food! (Loved seeing the dogs playing - thank you for all that you share with us, Derek. Luv yuh!)
Man, after having watched like 5 videos, THIS is the selling point for me. It just clicks right. As an arborist im in contact with lots of Mushrooms, as a Burger fan i like the part of just slamming the oversized piece of mushroom on into the bun because thats how you do it! Amazing... and i really like how clean you work and the presentation of the food, its so nice! Gonna try it when i find a chicken of the woods, they should be popping soon where i live :D kind regards
They look fantastic. I love that your dog gets playdates! 🙂
She's the one with a social life ; )
Made the lions mane version tonight. The breading was AMAZING but the mushrooms were soggy (boiled for 4 mins) and totally void of flavor. Could I salt the water they were boiled in? Not sure if that would help. Any advice?
These things look ridiculously good!!!
I wish I could like this more than once. Oh MY! 🤤
Did not realise that you were living in Blighty. Got one of the Lions Mane kits (Urban Farm IT) and had one really nice 'flush'. Working on a second attempt. Got a big mixed punnet of exotic mushrooms from CostCo today so I think mushroom burgers could feature on the menu later this week.
Thanks for the Mandolin tip. The sandwiches actually look incredible. Not going to do it myself but I do appreciate fine cuisine when I see it. Good job!
Oh, and top top about making the onions crispy! Thanks!
😍 As a Self professed Mushroom lover, I am absolutely speechless. Wooooow, just wooooow, thats all I can say 😍
That looks EPIC! I want one!
Would love to make you one. Thanks for watching!
great tip boiling..the one time I batter fried maitake it got to oily..still enjoyed it greatly

They all were incredible. Thanks for watching.

I have been waiting for a recipe like this! Thank you for delivering it!!❤❤
Our pleasure, thanks for watching.
Looks Soo yummy 😋
Fabulous line up! Really interesting to see how each performed! The colour of Frankie’s Chicken of the Woods is just beautiful. Yes to gravy. :)
Thanks ~ great video! 💚🙏🏻
Many thanks! Frankie’s treasures.
You make the most amazing food. It looks so easy, I wish I could cook like you.
They all look delicious! Think I’ll try the portobello ones, easy enough to get those.
I know what you mean about fried pickles. There used to be an American style chilli restaurant in Bristol that did them, only place I’ve ever seen them. Sadly closed now but was open long enough for me to get hooked on the pickles.
Love me some fried pickles. Portobello would work too!
Yeah but, oyster gonna give you a crunchy taste when deeply fried.
I can recommend my plug if interested. His stuff comes with cookbook or guide if you wanna grow yourself.
Wow! These look AMAZING! I'm too nervous to forage for mushrooms, but I will definitely try the ones I can buy at the store. 😊 You make it look so easy!!! Thank you for sharing these recipes!
Your mushroom sandwich LOOKS AMAZING!!!!
Looks delicious 😊
Thanks for the recipe, it looks delicious but I'm definitely adding more spices to my rendition!! Looking forward to it
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Awesome! I’m going to try the lion’s mane recipe tonight. Just have to go back to the store to pick up a few more ingredients.
Wowwwwww 🤩 that looks too delicious!!
OMG!!!! You hit every time!
Do you have a recipe for using oyster mushrooms as a chickenless sandwich? I’d love to know. 😊
I’m sure oyster will work well. I’ve seen other creators use them fried for sandwiches as a substitute for KFC etc.
You know, we don't yet, will have to work on that.. It would be the same process as long as they are the cluster oyster mushrooms, not the King Oyster. Hope that helps.
@@DerekSarnoChef I’m going to give it a try. I’ll let you know how it comes out.
Where did you get your mandoline? I never can find a decent one that I can sharpen/ keep sharp.
@@anitacook8227 It's listed on the bottom of the description.
Wow what a find? Enjoying your video, can't get these mushrooms iN.Cyprus,
Yes oyster sometimes, wild in season, the button, or regular. you are so good to listen too, gentle tones. The best.
Glad I came across your channel, I enjoyed the cooking and the dogs and I’m glad you include Frankie it’s great to see the passion for both cooking and animals!!
Keep up the great content!!
Also I would love to see a video on how to make the dog treats you talked about from the vegetable cuts you had left over
On the sandwich video, with Frankie giving us a taste test. 😁
Looks amazing Derek ❤

Will try this weekend with my lion's mane mushroom I am growing.
You got this - or anyone of the other ways we share on the mushroom masterclass playlist - you can't go wrong
how was it?
I've had COW mushrooms. They are delish!! The sauces tho :))))))
This is beautiful. 😊❤
Yowza, so yummy!🔥

All 3 sandwiches look amazing!😋😋
Thank you and thanks for watching.
This video made me super hungry! Wonderful recipe ❤
Awesome, very clean, definitely soothing voice. What a delicious treat this was
I can not wait to try this...AMAZING!!!
I had a foodie geek out experience at the beginning when you pulled out The Chicken of the Woods!
I didn't know you could find them growing naturally in the neighborhood.
Thought you had to venture into the deep woods. Lucky find you had! 👍👍👍
They're hard to miss, this is the 2nd one i've found on walks around the neighborhood
Very good choice for your knife, Opinel is one of the best french brand with laguiole (which is more cutlery).
These look delish. Loooove Frankie❤❤❤I haven't tried Lions Mane or Chicken in the woods yet. Enjoy making mushroom stroganoff often. I'll try these recipes soon. Thanks Gale x
Omg sooooooooo good❤
omg these look AMAZING!! Thank you for sharing these!!
I made this recipe yesterday and it tastes AMAZING!!! Omg, this is definitely a game changer for me. I will try out your other recipes, and hopefully, we make a full 180 degrees on becoming a vegetarian. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge 🤗
I have discovered your channel & I’m loving it. So delicious food and interesting commentary!
Glad you enjoy it!
We need this here in Washington DC 😋
Great sandwiches
your food is amazing m. great vibes too!
What an amazing recipe. I make the burgers for dinner but used the big brown mushrooms. It was so delicious. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Wonderful to hear, thanks for watching
Absolute DYNAMITE! I'm yet to try Chicken Of The Woods as I always find them on Yew trees but I bet Giant Puffball would work a treat! Keep it coming.
Looks INCREDIBLE!!
Maaaaaan. I wish I could reach through the screen. For many years Popeyes was my favorite restaurant on earth - yes, I know. But once I decided to not eat commercially raised meat anymore, Popeyes was out. It’s been over 5 years since I’ve had Popeyes and I miss it every time I think about it.
could the cremini mushrooms be blended in a patty?
