Hey Walid, I have question. What program would you use to animate this painting you did. For example, make animated waterfall, sky or bird flying around. Would you just transfer this picture to after effects?

Me too.. like I love photo manipulation due to the speed of getting the concept done faster, but I also love painting because It lets you more creative freedom to add extra stuff that you can't find in photos.

I entered a contest for a photo realistic environment, and a group member left me your link to help me. What a "gift"! Thank you so very much for sharing your talent, knowledge, and for just being you. You made this for free which so many do not do anymore, and for that I thank you as well. I guess I am a little late to this party. Not sure if you will see this comment or not. I really love the concept and execution. Beautiful work, well executed and enlightening. I would humbly suggest though that you stop apologizing for this and that not being perfect or not being planned ahead of time. No work of art is ever perfect, yet as this work demonstrates the end product can still evoke a sense of awe, wonder, technological achievement, the full glory and power of nature and a bit of mystery all at once. All of this just makes me want to go wander around inside the world you managed to create over a 4 hour period. Only I think I want to spend at least a few years there, not just four hours. All said it's pretty amazing and no apology for anything to get from start to finish is necessary, I humbly submit for your informed consideration Walid.

      Flip the switch.
What I mean is there is not much difference between the feelings of intimidation and inspiration - other than your perception.
You can look at those same artists and realize that with time and diligence you can also reach that level. Flip the switch from intimidation to inspiration.

I have a Surface Pro, I really want to be able to do this sort of thing, but the most I've ever really done to draw three-dimensional scenes is to sketch them, so using colors and textures digitally is harder for me to really imagine in my head, so this helped me a lot. There are plenty of speedpaints I've seen, but I like that you did this in real time to sort of explain it. I bought Sketchable on the Windows store because I happened to have a $25 Windows Store gift card from a couple years ago (I was in Middle school and thought I could buy Minecraft Java with it) but I can't really afford the subscription to higher-level applications like photoshop. Still, I think your techniques will be helpful to me. Thank you!

There is very much more to matte painting than majestic, Hollywood styled fantastic art. Some of the most fascinating matte paintings and set extensions are for everyday environments, and that much more difficult to pick.

This is really influential. I love taking these digital techniques and applying it to my art. But I do this in traditional media like Acrylic on glass or wood and using photo clippings and painting techniques to create a very realistic painting that I can frame and sell. This is my favorite form of painting. Somehow I get more satisfaction doing this traditionally then working with the digital medium. Don’t get me wrong I love photoshop and digital art but for me doing this in the traditional medium with paint and a brush just gives me a little more satisfaction that I created something that is real and not just pixels on a screen. Plus for me it’s the experimental aspects of painting that I love and for me doing this traditionally just allows to experiment with every day things you can find lying around your house.

  • @LionArtStudio

I agree, photo textures are very much a part of matte painting & many types of digital art.....character designers use textures for clothing, armour etc & even those doing fine art type work use textures to add canvas effect etc. This was a great tutorial, thanx.

I thought matte painting was what is used in movies, painted on glass with gaps for live action?! Is this something else?

It is - the kind of painting being done here, is "just" photorealistic painting. You would generally avoid having moving elements in a matte painting, like waterfalls, electric bolts, etc... and you would leave gaps in the painting for the live-action projection afterwards. Today though, the digital workflow kind of makes all that obsolete.

Thanks I was really searching for a good tutorial that i can start with since I only use painting in my digital work. I want to make an effort in creating artwork as your self.
