    FYI, Samoyed's are not just double coated to protect against cold, their coats also protect against extreme heat and sun exposure. Specifically, the ends of the hair on their outer coats are silver tipped to help protect against sun damage, which they are highly susceptible to. Depending on the environment they live in, trimming the ears, scruff, and back can make them extremely vulnerable. Sanitary clips on sammies are fine, but this trim is beyond that and could be risky for the dog. (Not to mention that these groomers were also stressing out the dog - note the heavy breathing during the brushing and the cowering during the sloppy ear/face trimming - in a way that could have easily been avoided.)

      I don't see any good reason to trim a Samoyed's hair. I might have cut my dog's pads so they could better stand on the kitchen floor instead of slide around, and made a poop chute, but that was it.
      They are a gorgeous dog to begin with, why mess with their guard hairs for aesthetics?
      The biggest work with a Samoyed is combing them out. People need to know the work of owning a Samoyed. I used to foster for them, first 2 years of a Samoyed pretty easy, but after that, they are shedding machines. People quickly got over-whelmed.

      sky & Joe you mean why they hate bad groomers. You don't run a slicker through them to line comb with the dryer going. And you sure as hell don't free hand scissor a double coated breed. Trimming the hocks and anus is one thing, but the guard hairs that protect them? Don't waste your money on groomers like these.

      Actually it's ok to lightly cut the samoyeds coat. It helps them during the shedding season and it helps let air through their coat in warm weather. Only a light trim though, they need to stay away from the skin. What is NOT ok is shaving. A groomer should never ever shave a samoyed. It ruins the fur. This groomer should not have brought a razor anywhere near this dog.

With a bit of common sense you understand that solely shaping the topcoat with scissors doesnt affect regrowth and therefore coat problems it will just normally grow back. And then also pomeranians who are also a spitz breed like the samyoed, are often cut with scissors amd nobody complains about it. Correct me if im wrong but to be fair I doubt it
      Addition: if you cut too much of the top coat it might be harmful aswell but im talking just about shaping it a lil like its shown in the video

    I think this groomer ruined the beauty of a Samoyed by removing the outer coat. The poor pup probably feels naked. A Samoyed has two coats and they are there for a reason. The under coat keeps them warm and dry in the winter and the outer coat keeps them cool in the summer. That's why they're so adaptable. I'm sorry that this groomer and the pup's owner doesn't know this.

    • @Whatlemons
      @Whatlemons 7 лет назад +43

      You do know that the outer coat is still intact. Most of the hair that came off this Samoyed was built up undercoat. What this groomer did is completely safe and reasonable it is called an outline trim. An outline trim is used to give the dog a cleaner look. You don't actually trim off enough hair to affect the job that the coat is doing. Do you feel naked after a trim? probably not.

      It's a samoyed, not a pomeranian or another small cute dog to put in the purse for fun. Samoyeds are one of the most ancient dogs, they look like they look for some reason and when you groom them in this way they just look funny. There is no need to use scissors, only for clean paws and thats all.

    This is neither grooming for show, in which trimming is pretty much limited to tidying the feet, nor the appalling shave that leaves the dog’s skin vulnerable to sunburn and injury. Rather, this trim leaves both under and outer coats intact so they retain the beauty and function of the double coat. Trimming the feet prevents their slipping on slick surfaces and picking up sharp or sticky debris. The coat free of random tufts and strands of hair will be much less susceptible to forming tangles and mats. Grooming will be pleasant for both human and dog! I love my Samoyed and the breed as a whole. But the breed lost its claim to being a “natural” dog when early imports to Europe from western Siberia (by way of polar expeditions) were bred to collies, et al., to “improve the coat”. Compare the present-day Sam’s coat to those of huskies, Malamutes, wolves...and to that of the magnificent Antarctic Buck, discovered in an Australian zoo and brought to England. He had been bought in Siberia and left in Oz by polar explorers on their way northward towards home.

      @@irislorikeet4287 okay let me try to explain this to the best of my abilities. Samoyeds are double coated dogs, which makes them able keep warm when the temperature is cold, and cool when it is hot outside. By cutting fur you are getting rid of the dogs double coat, or damaging it to the point they can't use it to cool off, which can lead to them getting severely overheated. Which we all know is bad. Brushing is okay, because it gets rid off all the loose, already shedded fur that needs a little help to complete dislodge itself from the dogs coat. (A Samoyed's coat is very thick. )

      @fuzzywzhe Год назад

      @@jbarcelona4 I used to foster for these dogs. They reason they appear to be so clean if they have a triple coat. I've had a lot of these dogs.
      Those long, wiry hairs they have, those are guard hairs. They help protect their undercoat. You don't want to cut that. Those hairs generally grow back, until they are old. Cutting them reduces their ability to shed dirt and they can't replace these hairs when they get old. They don't shed them regularly.
      There's no good reason to cut a Samoyed's hair. Even when we got a new foster, that was FILTHY and matted, we'd spend days combing it out, slowly. We would split mats sometimes (that is getting a hole near the skin, and the taking scissors and cutting outward - then you have two matts but you have easy access to the dead fur to slowly work it out.) We tried never to damage the coat, although sometimes we had to.
      I have a LOT of experience with these dogs. If you don't have to cut their hair, don't.
      They need their coat both to stay warm and to stay cool. They don't sweat after all, and cutting their coat in summer to keep them cool is like ripping out insulation in your house to keep it "cool" in summer. That doesn't work.
      They are entirely pink as well. If you cut their hair, they risk sunburn. They only have melanin on their nose and lips, the rest of them, pink.
      Samoyeds look gorgeous as they are, trimming their coat to make them more uniform or whatever - why bother? This is for a human being to appreciate, it does nothing for the dog. Don't bother.
