The Silence after the Train - Trainspotting in Snowfall

  • First snow arrived and I went trainspotting at Kusfors, By the river Skellefteälven where the railroad crosses. This is just as much a feast for the ears, I used high quality audio gear for the sound recording. I took a break and had some coffee on the Trangia stove too. It is the main railroad that pass north-south through northern Sweden, called "Stambanan genom övre Norrland". I was driving trains myself once, but now only enjoy the trains from the side. This one is for all the railfans out there!

This video is much an audio experience. I recommend decent headphones! The drama of a train rumbling through the wilderness, slowly builds to a peak, then fades and fades into the distance. What remains after the train is a striking silence. I hope you enjoy!

Well noted Erik, I have lived for many years by train tracks, and trains. When I wanted to know when a train was in proximity of me I would put my ears to the tracks, and listen for the vibration of the next train, and guess how far away it was! When I was a kid, I learned to observe with my ears as well! The coffee is a good way warm up while waiting on the next train! Peace!

Erik, that was a very impressive piece of work! You totally nailed the idea of the silence after the train. I have spent more than 25 years on the rails, and I used to really enjoy my job and would sometimes make camping and railfan trips to photograph the railroad in the desert or mountains of California. The silence after the train is always the best part.
The noise and ground tremble of a freight train either slogging uphill in tight curves, or flying along up close at maximum track speed, is nicely quenched by the heat and silence of a desert night... or you can hear the rain again... or the breezes in the trees. You can hear the ties, ballast and steel slowly relax back into rest after the train passes. Maybe if you're near a motored track switch, you can hear it re-line for the next plan from the Dispatcher. Then the silence or natural sounds are heard again, with seemingly more importance or clarity.
All of which is a perfectly gradual thing, as the ears begin to relax again.
    Well done!

Has National Geographic, Walt Disney or Time-Life called you yet? THEY SHOULD!! Seriously Erik this is some top quality stuff here only to be found in Box-office hits movie makers. I can hear the difference with those mics with the Jecklin disc. Reminds me of the 1970's stereo recordings which was the last of "REAL" stereo recordings unlike the flanged/delayed chorus filtered 'work-arounds of music tracks these days. I can hear a bird chirping on the left while you are closing the lid on your kettle on the right, that blows me away. And your camera operating skills are a match. Thanks for posting. Such a great contrast of sounds and mood.

Toga. Wonderful video. My focus goes from trains to your very nice looking gloves, to terrain, river, bridges. And then to the people who blasted, chipped, hauled out all that rock. Rhetorically why there's a fence on one side of the gorge and not the other. Realizing the moment is more important than any answers.

I worked as a Freight Conductor on the Union Pacific Railroad, from Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah to Green River and Rawlins, Wyoming; a distance of 200-330 miles (322-530 km), for 41 years. This brought back many wonderful memories to me--thank you! I appreciated how you captured the sequence of sounds, from the cacophonous roar, to the blissful silence. It was wonderful, like all of your productions are. I was surprised at how short the trains were. Our trains averaged one and one-half miles long (2.4 km) back in the day. Now, it is common to see trains over two miles long (3.22 km). Thank you, Erik.

I love this one so much. The trains are wonderful, the snowy landscape and the audio as the trains approach, pass and fade into the silence is exquisite. Trains in the snow remind me of the holidays when my dad and I would put up our electric trains around the Christmas tree and if we were lucky it would be snowing outside. Thank you for bringing that childhood memory back to a man in his 70's.
I also enjoy your coffee breaks on the trail and always wait for the "thumbs up". I often bring my stove and coffee on hikes because of your videos and enjoy a warm cup alone in the forest. I'm really glad you're back and exploring new themes in your videos and I hope you're feeling well.
