Today we're telling the story of PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM ELTON JOHN
This was a non album single in 1975, in the same vein as Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.
Still a timeless song.
Gene Page was not part of the Elton John Band, he wrote the string arrangements and conducted the orchestra, the Band was Elton, Davey, Dee, Nigel and of course Ray Cooper (the Jimi Hendrix of the tambourine)
Having owned (as millions did) the Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy album, I do remember Philadelphia Freedom was NOT on the original album. It was released in the US as a single only. It was later added as an extra song on the Captain Fantastic CD. Am I wrong? I enjoyed your post.
You are not wrong. It's not on my Captain Fantastic album either.
Yes, I was surprised when I heard later it was on the CF album, as well as Pinball Wizard and Lucy in the Sky. I love all 3 songs. They were released as singles (that I still have), but they don't really fit the autobiographical theme or style of Captain Fantastic.
I HAD that album. Was NOT on it. Wish it had been. Love the quality of your vids but have to call that out
he became popular in 1970
I was wondering why an English man made a song about the Bicentennial city. Now I associate it with 2024 freedom!
Philadelphia Freedom was NOT on the Captain Fantastic album.
It was a separate single release.
you're correct it wasn't on the original release at the time , although has since been added on as a bonus track from the 1995 Mercury and 1996 Rocket reissues
Philadelphia freedom wasn't written for Captain fantastic.
Philadelphia Freedom was not a single off the Capt Fantastic album -IT WAS A STAND ALONE single as was Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Don't go breaking my heart. You should know this. But You don't know what you're talking about
......NO song presaged - or has since been associated with the American Bicentennial one year later, MORE.....
